We’re Nayla Bahri and Eric Johnson, and we love to talk about the intersection of life and work. Why? Most of us will spend more hours of our life working than doing anything else. The relationship we have with work, and the way we make meaning of our time and experience there, serves as a great platform to explore how we show up to the rest of our lives: relationships, family and parenting, our health, our hobbies and interests, and our general attitude towards the human experience. With insights and observations pulled from our leadership and career coaching, teaching and consulting work, as well as the most relevant research across fields, we’ll talk about the ideas that really impact how you experience work – and your life – and actionable strategies to make work work for you, from the inside out.

    Protecting Yourself From the Naysayers

    Protecting Yourself From the Naysayers

Have you ever thought to yourself, “This job would be so much better if it weren’t for the people?”
When one of Eric’s clients jokingly said this in a recent discussion, they shared a laugh about it. However, Eric later realized it’s not only something he hears often from his clients, but something he’s also said himself in the past.
We thought it would be a good idea to dig deeper into this sentiment on the podcast, but we want to look at it from the perspective of having customers or clients. Businesses need them to be successful, but so many of us wish we could do business without them and the negative things they bring to our workday.
Since we can’t all pull a Henry David Thoreau and live alone in a cabin for years at a time, let’s explore how we can protect ourselves from the naysayers.

Can We Change How Others See Us

Can We Change How Others See Us

Is it possible to change someone’s perspective of you?
If so, how do you do it?
Nayla’s recently had conversations with several clients about changing other people’s perceptions of us and we’ve realized this comes up a lot in our coaching practices so it’s time we covered it on the show.
Nayla even gets vulnerable and shares an example of feedback she received early in her career that she avoided addressing at first and what she learned from that experience.
If you’ve ever been given less-than-ideal feedback and you want to change what people think of you, or you’re responsible for providing feedback to members of your organization, this is one episode you don’t want to miss.

    Anger At Work

    Anger At Work

None of us are immune to feeling angry, but do we express it in a healthy and constructive way that minimizes the negative impact on those we work with?
A recent experience with one of Eric’s clients has led to us tackling the topic of anger in the workplace from not just one angle, but two on this week’s episode of the podcast.
Not only did this client’s experience inspire this episode, but it also inspired us to take a hard look at how we handle our own anger that arises in our work. We invite you to listen to this episode so we can all do this inner work together and create healthier workplaces.

    The Fantasy of Quitting

    The Fantasy of Quitting

Ever since our conversation last week with Maricella Herrera, we’ve been talking nonstop amongst ourselves and those around us about what can be learned as a result of making big decisions in our lives; more specifically the decision to quit our job.
As part of these conversations, we realized our clients frequently express a fantasy about quitting their jobs. So, today, we want to explore where the fantasy might end and reality begins as you consider even just the fantasy of quitting your job.

Refreshing take on work and life

Just started listening and loved how Eric doesn’t mince words about his disdain for the Wayfair CEO’s clueless employee email pushing them to work harder and longer. Yes, there are multiple ways and measures for success!

Recommend!

Has quickly become one of my faves for thought-provoking content around my work life, and conversations I don’t hear very often about what it all means.

Love the Premise and The Format - Great For Anyone Evaluating Their Job and Career

I’m a fellow Podcaster and Leadership Coach, and I recommend this podcast to any of my clients and friends who are thinking about their career or life questions (and to any potential listeners for that matter)

The show is great not just because Eric and Kayla are great coaches, but the format is in my opinion, compelling. In addition to the back and forth, their ability to bring in examples and antidotes from their day to day work adds so much great perspective. Additionally, the back and forth nature makes the show a great format to listen to and easy to follow along, and the topics they pick always seem to be relevant to anyone who is thinking deeply about their own relationship with their work or career
