    She turned down $20,000 and an NDA. Dr. Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco joins Insured to Fail EDU for "The NDA She Wouldn't Sign." Kim's a Virginia criminologist and human trafficking expert who became a fierce special education advocate after her own daughter's IDEA rights were violated — logging hundreds of pro bono hours for other families, helping secure roughly $150,000 in Lassiter v. Prince William County Public Schools, and racking up 5M+ views on YouTube for calling out her school board directly. Kim walks us through what happened once she started asking questions: retaliation, a communication ban, multiple Virginia Letters of Findings against the district, and a due process fight where her request for a continuance — and for the hearing officer to recuse himself — was denied.     There is no meaningful freedom of speech without the ability - and the protection - to tell the truth - without retaliation. And when it comes to defamation, truth is an absolute defense. In this episode, we share audio from a lawful recording made in Virginia. You will hear a teacher risk her livelihood to warn a parent about serious failures affecting her child. The substance of that conversation has been corroborated by both the parent and the student. The teacher did not give us permission to publish the recording and declined to comment. We have therefore taken steps to protect her identity, including disguising her voice and removing identifying information. Where appropriate, the matters discussed in this episode are presented as allegations. But “alleged” does not mean unverified. We have taken steps to corroborate the underlying facts, and we stand behind the factual accuracy of what we report. This episode launches The PWCS Files, an ongoing investigation into the Prince William County Public Schools district’s special education system, and the structures that allow the same failures to continue nationwide. We examine the moral injury experienced by educators who feel pressured to remain silent, and the lifelong consequences when students with disabilities are denied equal access to education.
