Ep. 233: Good to Goals (Ft. Aaron Rufus “MadDog” Graham)

My guest is a long tenured employee at one of the finest comedy clubs in the world, Denver Comedy Works.  He threw down his ‘Door Staff’ sash long ago, climbing up the rungs to his position of bar manager.  A longtime lover of comedy, he performs stand-up whenever he gets the chance & has opened for lots of nationally touring acts; put your hands, feet, & anything else you can find together & welcome to Top Shelf Studios for his fourth ever podcast: Aaron Rufus “MadDog” Graham! Follow Aaron on Instagram @rufusspiderman & on other social media: Aaron Rufus “MadDog” Graham — Watch out on his Instagram for when he will be performing in round 2 of Comedy Works annual “New Faces” contest. Lots of shop talk.  Hear about the many roles Aaron has navigated through his 13 years working at Comedy Works, the weirdest questions he has been asked by patrons, how strange it was to work & perform comedy during the Covid-Era, and we learn that Aaron “can talk words,” because he has a degree in English.  Journalism is dead.  At least that’s what he was told by the professor on day one of ‘Journalism 101’ in the early 2000’s.   InTALLerable is not dead because we are powered by our supporters!  If you’d like to get the full uncut hang with every guest, some awesome hand-made in the USA merch, and help put more smoked meat into the mouths of future guests, join at Patreon.com/InTALLerable  Our supporters make it possible, we make it InTALLerable.  FO & BW 0:00 — Guest Intro 1:15 — Aaron’s Many Roles at CW 3:00 — Night Owl 3:45 — “NATIVE” 5:00 — Shreddin’ Pow 6:15 — Cat Lover for Life 9:00 — Moved to Denver for Comedy Works 11:00 — Chaos of working at a comedy club 12:30 — Food at Comedy Clubs 14:00 — Comedy in the Covid Era 21:00 — Nobody is Against You 23:00 — What Aaron gets asked most? 24:00 — 6-7 Frank Azar Billboard 26:00 — Weirdest Questions? 27:30 — Servers not Waitress 29:00 — Wing Flip 29:30 — Magical Place 31:00 — Decade of College 32:30 — Journalism 101: ‘Journalism is Dead’ 35:00 — “I Can Talk Words” 38:00 — Sean’s Sound Book 41:30 — Best Story from the Book 42:30 — Ari Shaffir Poster Story 44:00 — Being a Sponge 45:00 — Hoping for a Job at Comedy Works 46:30 — Visiting Clubs around the US 48:00 — No Ticket & a Job Offer 49:45 — Advice: Get Around It 52:00 — Door People: Two Buckets 54:00 — Starting out & making mistakes 57:00 — Why do we keep going back? 59:00 — Pod arc (trippy) 1:00:00 — Cat Recovery 1:02:00 — Aaron’s Family “Tried” Dogs 1:03:30 — Cats Live Long 1:05:00 — Shouts to Ryan on the Drums 1:07:00 — EATIN’ 1:08:15 — After-Hours & Wing Review 1:10:00 — RIP best wings in Denver (Wide Right) 1:11:00 — Aaron’s Comedic Path & Reps 1:14:00 — Late night Mics 1:17:30 — “Making It” 1:19:00 — Compound Growth Strategies 1:21:00 — Colorado’s Micro-Scenes 1:22:30 — New Shows 1:25:00 — DenverStandup.com 1:25:30 — ‘Heighting’ 1:27:00 — Shouts to Ratio Brewworks 1:28:15 — Plugs! 1:29:15 — FO & BW 1:29:30 — Supporter Credits

Ep. 232: Cat in a Cone (Ft. Josh Beaver & Dan Mazzucca)

I am joined by two returning guests of InTALLerable, both Denver Improv guys, stand-up comics, and two dudes that always make me laugh. Please, get all jiggy with it wherever you are reading this & welcome back to Top Shelf Studios: Josh Beaver & Dan Mazzucca!  Follow Josh @_BeaverComedy & Dan @FiftyTwoAD on Instagram for their upcoming dates & more!  Dan’s podcast is called: ‘Dinosaurs Rule’ so watch it & give them a follow. It’s a bittersweet hang, as mighty Josh is set to spread his wings & move to Austin, TX (the real one) to chase his comedy dreams.  The casino wouldn’t accept my bet, but I’d put my money on him to find success, he’s just too damn funny not too.  That said, I hope he will come back on whenever he passes back through Denver.  If for nothing else, for the chicken.  Dan teaches us about how fat beats tall on airplanes, Josh tells us about his adventures on the road & how he learned not to let his bag cost more than his plane ticket, we hear about some upgrades at the Improv, and we argue about the best form of ice.  Talking crushed, cubbed, etc.  Not that other one.  We talk comedy-staff to comedy-staff & glimpse into my sound-guy book, to look over some of the shows, some of the crazy amazing talents, that I have been lucky enough to run the soundboard for at Comedy Works South.  Don’t forget the smoked chicken wings!!  Join us at Patreon.com/InTALLerable for EATIN’, the full, uncut hang in its rightful untapped glory for our supporters.  You make it possible, we make it InTALLerable.  Only $2/month keeps us ad-free & supporter-driven.   Join now & get your name in the credits, plus with your contribution, I will make you an InTALLerable hat with my own hands!!   What’s not to love, making me do even more work for the love of the game?!   Worth it all the way for the fans that keep us chuggin’ along.  Thank you. Ep. 231: You Can Let Go! (Ft. Jared Chandler)

My guest is a Denver-based stand-up comic, photographer, videographer, podcaster, son, dog-dad, cat-dad, a kind person — listen, the list could go on indefinitely, but suffice it to say, what a pleasant change of pace to have some lank I can look at eye-to-eye. Ladies & (more likely) dudes, get as wild as he does on the forklift, that’s right, go full pedal to the floor, forklift-certified-wild, for our guest, Jared Chandler! Follow Jared on Instagram @_JaredChandler & his production company @RaspberryCatProductions shot a backyard standup showcase special over the summer called: ‘The Marmalade Show’ — go get some eyeballs on that, y’all!  For Jared’s future stand-up dates, go to his website: jaredchandlercomedy.com  We discussed the joy of animals & having more mouths to feed now because of my empathy, Jared’s recent studio upgrades for his pod: ‘Stretch Yourself’, and I drag Jared back into the mucky waters of the news, a swamp of negativity from which he has escaped (some) of what’s happening around the world.  We’ve got new UFO disclosure images from the Department of War that look like they were made with Microsoft Paint 1999, I take a stab at explaining ‘Hegemony’ as a concept in Denver comedy terms, and we give LOTS of shout outs to people inspiring us to work harder and make better, funnier stuff. A quality hang with Jared (always is!), but even better in its uncut glory.  If you want to join us for the EATIN’ & get access to lots of bonus episodes, while also supporting an independently made, 100% ad-free show, go to Patreon.com/InTALLerable — Join at whatever tier works for you economically, or just shoot me a message and ask real nice.  Mayhaps I can help you with a gifted sub!  Huge thank you to Sam Krason, who came down to be live producer & smash some Top Shelf chicken wings on this episode.  Handmade merch for free?!  You read that right.  Whenever your support for our show reaches the cost of a hat, I will stitch you one with my own two hands.  So if you’re doing the math, the Patreon gets you more fun with great guests AND free InTALLerable merch designed & produced in the USA. Ep. 230: This Episode is a 1 (Ft. Tanner Coffman)

My guest makes his long-awaited return to Top Shelf Studios for another InTALLerable instant classic! Topics ranging from new Tap-to-Cat tech ideas, to fathers riding motorized scooters around Denver with their baby abreast, to the mom scams we’re all falling for; make some noise wherever you are for a stand-up comic who is a mere shaven mustache away from being cast to play the leading man in the live-action remake of ‘The Boss Baby’ — Tanner Coffman! Follow Tanner on Instagram @TrashBagTanner — Check out his live show: ‘Debate n’ Debunk’ every last Friday of the month at Node Art’s Collective! We discussed how plateauing feels like losing in the pursuit of artistic growth, Denver’s perhaps missing online presence of a comedy scene bursting with hilarious people, tailoring to the shrinking attention spans of Gen Z, and our newest addition to our studio: a podcast bodega cat named Olive.   Tall story short, we had one whole week of winter in Denver this year.  While at my day job, my dog, Maggie, suddenly stopped & pointed at something in the bushes. That’s when we found a struggling cat, who looked to be living outside, seeking shelter from the snow nestled into a gap in a staircase. She was too frightened to show herself for this episode, but don’t worry, Sean showed his ass with bad jokes enough for everyone.  EATIN’ uncut in its full-smoked-glory is up for our supporters over at Patreon.com/InTALLerable If you want to keep our show ad-free, human-powered, and independently-prepared, hop on over & join the ‘Heights’ — Only $2/month to support the show & get some of our first run of Merch!  As soon as your support reaches the cost of a hat, I will make you one using my own hands.  Basically you can get a free hat on top of some entertaining, unfiltered, human content, while supporting independent people having some laughs in a garage.  FO & BW 0:00 — Guest Intro 1:00 — Downturn in Denver Scene? 2:45 — Getting worse/Plateau 4:00 — Tanner’s writing process 5:45 — Discipline 6:45 — Killer 10 minutes 8:00 — Marathon Mindset 10:00 — Reps matter 11:30 — Perceived “rut” 12:30 — Spot for Alt-Comedy needed 13:30 — Funny People overfloweth 14:15 — Missing Consistent Online Presence 15:30 — Sean’s Dumb Idea 17:30 — Sampler Pack of the Denver Scene 18:30 — Tailoring to Gen Z 20:00 — Cart before the Horse 22:00 — Dogshit for 1 run through 22:30 — Be Ready. 23:30 — Wing Flip & Signature Station ID 24:00 — New development: Bodega Studio Cat 25:00 — Tap-to-Cat Tech 26:30 — Sovereignty Cat in Need 27:00 — Smoked Meat Insights 28:30 — Comedy Fort & Bryce Peterson Shoutout 29:45 — City-Boy Denver Review 31:00 — Colorado has good Pizza?! 32:00 — Living in bad spots 33:30 — Tanner’s Time in Iowa 34:30 — Crackheads over Old’s 36:00 — Carrying the Shit from the Bottom 39:00 — Positive outlook on the poo bag 40:30 — Mom on the pod 41:15 — Devil’s lettuce to Medicine 43:00 — Crushing the average steps 44:00 — InTALLerable Dad of the Week 46:00 — Riding Scooters & Being a Woman: not easy 47:00 — Biblical Baby Transport 48:00 — Pay more by “bucket” 49:00 — Inflation hitting the bread market 50:00 — Want to retire this joke 51:00 — Nobody Owns Anything 52:45 — Changes in the scene 54:30 — People are frustrated with the world 55:30 — Ruts happen. 56:30 — Do you Dream? 57:30 — Tanner’s Reoccurring Dreams 1:00:30 — EATIN’ Patreon.com/InTALLerble 1:01:00 — After-Hours & Wing Review! 1:02:15 — 0-1 Scale 1:04:00 — Zen Challenge for Tanner 1:05:00 — Tanner’s Gift (in progress) 1:06:30 — Gus Rey Art Shoutout 1:09:00 — Denver Traffic Cops (VOTE NO!) 1:10:30 — Court tells ya to pound sand 1:11:30 — Mom Scams 1:14:00 — Betting on Dog Deterioration 1:14:45 — ‘Heighting’ 1:15:30 — Plugs! 1:16:15 — FO & BW

Ep. 229: Planting Shade for the Enjoyment of Others (Ft. Lemmy Comedy)

My guest is a Colorado comic who started performing stand up in his 50’s. To some, that might seem “late” to begin a career in entertainment, but for Lemmy, it meant entering the Loveland comedy scene with an arsenal of life-already-lived.  A hidden but huge advantage in crafting his voice & material, because unlike some (or most) open-mic comics getting their start, Lemmy had already raised children, volunteered for years as a mountain firefighter, and could draw from all his lived experience when writing jokes.  Follow Lemmy on Instagram @LemmyComedy — Check out his website https://www.lemmycomedy.com for his upcoming stand-up dates! Hop on Lemmy’s free Patreon for his show B.O.A.T.S. (Based on a True Story), where he reviews different movies all based on true stories, & talks about what the movie got right & where it diverted from the true events. (It’s FREE!) He was gracious enough to drive all the way to Denver to be on InTALLerable, eat our signature smoked chicken wings, and share whatever valuable insight playing the role of “wise one” for this ‘cast.  We talked about how our politicians could use a "spirit of the game” taken in pill form, how important the depth & breath of relationships is for men’s health, especially into their 50’s, and we hear about Lemmy’s pesky Trumpy neighbor.  Sean offers a new-school approach for bridging political divides to find humanity in each other.  Or maybe it’s just drilling down into the madness of others; listen & decide for yourself! A good hang with good people over good chicken.  What more could you ask for nowadays?  For the full uncut EATIN’ with Lemmy, come join us at Patreon.com/InTALLerable — No matter what tier you are able to support us at, we will send you some of our new first batch of merch (keychains!), and you will be part of the growing group of ‘Heights’, who help make our show possible, so that we can make it InTALLerable.  FO & BW 0:00 — Guest Intro 1:30 — Bourbon, Bikes & Pancreas Pain 5:00 — “Late-in-Life” Firefighter 6:15 — Pancreatitis of the Booze 8:30 — Dr. Says… 12:15 — What’s happening with the Pancreas? 14:00 — Lemmy’s Scientific Sons 16:00 — Marriage & meeting his Wife 18:00 — Manhattan Beach Lifestyle 19:00 — Outdoors 22:30 — Spirit of the Game 24:00 — Paying Taxes (for what?) 26:30 — “Intellectually Pessimistic, Emotionally Optimistic” 27:30 — Depth & Breadth of Relationships 28:30 — Digging into problem of Suicide in America 30:00 — WHY (Guys in their 50’s) 31:45 — Chronic Pain (Emotional or Physical) 33:45 — Ability to be open & honest 35:00 — Therapy & Advice for the Youths 38:00 — Isolation in search of community 39:00 — Substance as a cultural lube 42:30 — State & Local Taxes 44:30 — Lemmy’s time as a Firefighter in Eagle 46:30 — Why roads in Europe last longer 48:00 — How about build some amazing public good?!? 49:00 — Keeping up the facade 51:30 — Praise for Lemmy’s Support 52:30 — Supporters are the Boss 53:30 — Bypassing the Techno-Oligarchs 54:45 — The yard sign was a gift 55:30 — Defining Gaslighting & Honeypotting 56:30 — Trump Guy v. Ep. 228: Comedy & Tragedy (Ft. Cameron Altman)

My guest is a powerful spiritual entity in human form & one of the kindest souls to join us in our humble Top Shelf Studios, please welcome the first guest to endure our new “hot” lights — Cameron Altman! How would I describe him?? Despite surviving a hellish adolescence fraught with abuse, his positive glimmer — the light he brings the world — continues to shine bright, casting his strong luminous beams of humanity onto anyone willing to hear his story.  Cameron is someone willing to go ‘All-In’ on himself.  Even if going ‘All-In’, once meant crashing out, driving 14 hours to sign up for Kill Tony in an arena, & being pulled from the bucket to follow comedy legend, Andrew Dice Clay.  He was booed off the stage by thousands.. Cameron was born legally blind, but could foresee his name getting pulled on NYE. I fivesee him continuing to find meaning in a sometimes seemingly meaningless world.  I’m grateful for getting to know him & for this hang. Cameron Altman is someone who inspires me to not give up.  You can follow him on Instagram @crosseyedcomic111 EATIN’ smoked chicken wings with Cam is uncut in its full glory for our supporters — Patreon.com/InTALLerable Only $2 and you will be supporting smoked meat put into the mouths of future guests. My guests are both stand-up comedians, one returning, and one a new friend of the show.  Avery Dauer aka “Leaning Findance,” graces us for a satire-soaked conversation centered around Avery’s life, the state of comedy, and the rapid onslaught of the news & the world.  He is joined on the couch by our (at this point) old buddy, Jacob Humphries.   Follow Avery on Socials @AveryDauerComedy — Follow Jacob @ChrashCompactor Avery competes in the national Roast Battle League out of Los Angeles (NOT ATX!). He departed back to the bright lights of L.A. with a piece of our hearts and memento from Top Shelf Studios, our ‘Disabled Parking Only’ streetsign.  May it serve his future studio endeavors in whatever way he sees fit.  It’s his sign now.  We lost a microphone off the top, so that’s part of the delay on getting this out to everyone.  So, I had to learn a new skill to salvage the audio.  I guess that’s what failure gets ya. If you want to support the show like Avery & Jacob, while also getting access to the uncut episodes, EATIN’ with our guests, & more bonus content, join us at whatever tier that fits where you’re at in life over at Patreon.com/InTALLerable No timestamps on this one.  We were too hot on the mic (happens).. discussing everything from using the word ‘Retarded’, to how the greatest country on Earth, the United States of America, seems to be the only country not to care about lists when it comes to hurting innocent victims.  SAD & EMBARRASSING!! (as our President would tweet) Plus you know who is always listening. (ATX) FO & BW
