    YoWo Music

    We had the pleasure of having Claire Cross and Lena Douglas, Artistic Directors of YoWo Music, join us in the Jam Sessions studio. Joining them were two participants of the program, Ruby Sweeney-Spitzeck and Ella Berlowitz. YoWo Music is a contemporary music program for high school aged girls and gender non-conforming teens.     Niine

    Niine the idiosyncratic ball of quirky goodness has been hitting the live music scene hard. Niine’s vibrant song writing and organic grooves have been making an impression since the end of 2016. As the world’s first avant-guard avalanche pop artist, she brings a completely new sound to the music scene through her recordings and live shows. Her abstract view of the pop world and discrete punk attitude is delivering exactly what the pop music scene craves.     Tess Guthrie

    Tess grew up on the beaches of Torquay and mostly writes about having existential crises while falling in love and/or being a raging feminist. After moving to Melbourne to study pure math and philosophy (which didn’t help much with the existential angst), she’s clawing her way out of the dark recesses of academia back towards her guitar.     Soft Rubbish

    Soft Rubbish is the stage name of singer/songwriter Julie Montan. Her moody ruminations on the fragile nature of life are bare and unpolished yet disarming and enchanting. Her voice is nuanced and her fingers fledgling as she strums the tenor ukulele drenched in delay while delicately smashing the shit out of her glockenspiel.     Evelyn Ida Morris

    Evelyn Ida Morris, best known as Pikelet, is a gifted musician, celebrated for their dexterity across multiple instruments and for songwriting that is complex and structurally adventurous. Since 2007, Morris has released four albums as Pikelet, an experimental pop act, winning ‘The Age’ Music Victoria Award for Best Experimental Musician and being shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. In 2014, Morris co-founded LISTEN, an advocacy group focused on creating discourse around gender diversity and politics in Australian music. This year Evelyn Morris will release their first self titled album under ‘Evelyn Ida Morris’. The album represents a significant departure from the looping pop of Pikelet, for which Evelyn is best known. It builds on the structural complexity of that project, but focuses wholly on piano – huge, wild, racing, dexterous piano. These new works are lush, postclassical compositions, frequently referencing Debussy and Ravel. Thematically, they deal with the experience of being non-binary and making sense of that experience. Recently voted one of the ’50 Most Powerful People in the Australian Music Industry’, Evelyn uses they/them pronouns and does not identify as female or male.     The Playbook

    The Playbook have been stalwarts of the Melbourne Pop Punk scene since their inception in 2011, regularly seen engaging and entertaining crowds while supporting international heavyweights such as The Wonder Years, The Story So Far, Neck Deep and Bayside. In June 2017, The Playbook released “Reach” off their debut album “All I Am Is What You Left Behind”, which scored some Triple J airtime. Following the release of “Reach” and second single “Locked Away”, the band set out on headline shows across Australia, before picking up dates supporting Heartsounds (USA). Laura, Stu and Jenkins of The Playbook join Miller in the Jam Sessions studio to perform acoustic versions of their songs, and celebrate the launch of their album “All I Am Is What You Left Behind’.
