The transition from year 1 to year 2 in the podcasting industry is widely considered the most critical developmental phase . Often referred to as "the biggest leap," this period marks the shift from simply surviving on host opinion pieces and estranged facts to mastering the nuances of the professional podcasting game, capturing and retaining listeners, locking in sponsors and keeping the message fresh and engaging!
With that said, BTB clearly “broke out” in 2025 Year 1, they came on the scene right in nick of time for the 2025 dynasty season, hitting the ground running, with super episodes on Coaching evals, Offensive lines evaluation, QB, RB and WR metrics, some of the most unique and memorable episodes, peppered with Gibbs advanced stats and Dans insightful commentary at every level. (The weekly newsletter rankings left something to be desired…)
Year 2 will be different, as the proverbial “game slows down” for BTB, will they learn the entire playbook?, or merely survive, repeating shows resting on the laurels of Y1 success? Most listeners have now heard a full season Jacob and Dan’s plays, they’ve “seen the tape”, will BTB adapt and evolve or fallback into “old habits”, resulting in the same plays from 2025? Great podcasters improve their playbook in the offseason to stay ahead, but will BTB adapt and “take the leap” in Y2 or continue the same as Y1 and suffer the proverbial “sophomore slump”?
Judging from a recent BTB episode (Ironically called “year 2 breakouts”) where Dan incessantly continued to use his arbitrary “Dewey decimal” rating system (7.8, 9.9, 5.6) to assign to year 2 players (e.g. Skattebo, Fannin, Gadsden), without any clear rationale or rubric to support, puzzling that these arbitrary “ratings” are assigned based solely on Dan’s subjective opinions?
Also the show sometimes seems to have a clear and obvious bias to Dans NY 🏈 Giants, (ie inexplicably rating Skattebo higher than Judkins, Marks, Hampton??), considering Skat is returning from a devastating injury, there’s doubt whether he plays much less deliver “2000 yards” as Dan seems to propose!
How does BTB adjust their second-year after their first full offseason sets the trajectory for whether they become a long-term starter or a rotational depth piece in my podcast lineup!
The grace period is over, listeners will demand a fresher, more complex podcast, less ranting, more in depth analysis! BTB must adapt to move from the special teams role to become a starter with significantly increased snap counts!
