Born Dead, Choose to Burn Bright: A Paralympic World Record Holder on Passion, Pain and Purpose | Mikael Avatar

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa is joined by Mikael Avatar — Paralympic long jump world record holder, life coach with over 20,000 hours, cerebral palsy researcher, painter, poet, film-maker, and founder of the Avatar Resurrection app. Mikael was born clinically dead for up to 45 minutes. He grew up in Sweden in a household so full of people from across the world that nobody had time to teach him how to have cerebral palsy — so he didn't. He broke his first world record in Nottingham in 1991, his second in front of 98,000 people in Atlanta in 1996. Then he felt completely empty. What came next — painting a hundred canvases, moving to Thailand to escape chronic pain, building a coaching method from 40 years of handwritten notes, and launching a free app designed to rebuild joy 30 seconds at a time — is the real story. Pippa and Mikael explore:Being left with the dead children at the hospital — and the nurse who noticed he was breathingWhy growing up without anyone treating him as disabled was the greatest gift he never asked forBreaking a Paralympic world record in front of 98,000 people and feeling nothing but emptyThe difference between motivation and passion — and why finding the right angle changes everythingWhy 5,000 hours of anything gives you a skill that can make you money, and what happens at 15,000Painting 100 canvases as a framework for testing whether you actually love somethingMoving from Sweden to Thailand three months after discovering the humidity cured his chronic painThe Avatar Resurrection app: 180 days of golden pauses, starting with 30 secondsA conversation about what it actually means to be alive — from someone who spent 45 minutes deciding whether to bother. From JP Morgan to French Fluency Coach: Leaving Corporate to Define Success on Your Own Terms | Rachel Pierre

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa is joined by Rachel Pierre — Haitian-born engineer, former JP Morgan Chase and Apple programme leader, executive French conversationalist coach, and author. Rachel grew up speaking only French, learned English in a year through baptism by fire, spent two decades climbing the corporate ladder in New York, and then walked away from it all after a chance conversation with a billionaire on a Parisian patio led to a 90-day French immersion experiment that actually worked. Her coaching company, Parlay, launched in January 2025. Her book challenges the idea that a woman's success is measured by her marital status and her willingness to use her uterus. This is a frank, funny, and genuinely moving conversation about language, identity, courage, and what it really means to define success for yourself. Pippa and Rachel explore: How Rachel's father force-switched the TV to English the year before she emigrated — and why it workedThe psychology of language fear: why high-achievers who command boardrooms fall apart trying to say bonjourWhy walking into a French restaurant without saying bonjour is essentially declaring warThe Air Canada CEO who resigned after saying two words of French in a seven-minute speechWhat 20 years in corporate America taught Rachel about what she didn't wantThe $30,000 in bad coaching investments — and what eventually workedHer mother telling her she wasn't successful because she had no husband or children — and the book that came from that momentWhy 71% of professionals are always looking for a career change, and what to do if you're one of themA conversation about the courage to leave, the cost of staying, and what success actually looks like when you stop letting other people define it. Writing, Wealth and the 1% Rule: How Small Shifts Create a Life You Actually Want | Natalie Saar

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa is joined by Natalie Saar — writer, self-published author, embroidery pattern designer, and founder of the Embroider Everywhere Etsy shop and a snail mail art club. Natalie has spent a decade writing professionally across equities, finance, and consulting, all while building a quietly remarkable creative life on the side. Her first nonfiction book, Becoming 1% Better, started as a Substack and became a Chanticleer Mind and Spirit Award shortlistee. Her new book, Fake It Till You Make It: The Science of Feeling Rich, is out now. This is a warm, wide-ranging conversation about creativity, rest, perfectionism, and what it actually means to build a life that feels abundant — whatever your bank balance says. Pippa and Natalie explore:How the 1% better framework was born out of a breakdown, not a breakthroughWhy rest is not a reward for productivity — and what happens when you treat it like oneThe Super Bloom essay: what dormant seeds and desert wildflowers have to do with resilienceRedefining wealth as freedom of time, not money in the bankPerfectionism, shame, and the grief of not being able to do everything at onceWhy the Internet is littered with unfinished projects — and how to make peace with thatKobe Bryant's thousand shots a day and what it taught Natalie about handling failureEmbroidery, snail mail, and why analogue things matter more than everA genuinely joyful conversation about creativity, enough-ness, and the quiet power of doing one small thing better today. Surviving the Storm: Faith, Mental Health and Finding Purpose After Trauma | Chaplain Sy Ali

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa is joined by Chaplain Sy Ali — decorated veteran, mentor, author, and spiritual protector. Sy spent decades as a protection agent for diplomats and dignitaries, a professional wrestler, and a corporate security executive. By every external measure, he was succeeding. Privately, he was planning his own death. A DUI in March 2020 cracked everything open — and what followed was a memoir, a chaplaincy, and a calling to make sure nobody else suffers in silence the way he did. Pippa and Sy explore: The night that changed everything — and why the people closest to him never saw it comingWhat true strength actually looks like when you've spent decades suppressing griefHow PTSD forms quietly behind a high-functioning exteriorFaith as a framework for people who aren't religious — and what it means to just be humanWorking in a veterans' homeless shelter and becoming chaplain by defaultWhy young people are more willing to talk about mental health than any previous generationThe kindergartner who lost his father and what happened when someone finally sat with himCommunity, connection, and what the Shetland Islands fire festivals taught Pippa about mental healthA conversation about what it costs to mask pain — and what it takes, finally, to stop. From Big Tech to Big Purpose: Reinvention, Identity and Your Second Act | Colleen Pimentel

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa sits down with Colleen Pimentel — a former big tech leader turned purpose coach, speaker, and creator of the Second Act Playbook. Colleen spent 30 years in the tech industry, navigating more than ten reinventions within corporate life. By any measure, she was successful. But five years ago, something shifted. Her daughter left for college — and with her went a huge part of Colleen's identity. The question that emerged from that emptiness wasn't just what do I do next? It was who am I, really? What followed was a profound journey of self-discovery: learning to quiet the noise, listen inward, and build a life rooted in genuine purpose rather than external achievement. Colleen now helps others navigate their own second acts — with practical tools for identity, intention, and meaningful reinvention. In this warm and honest conversation, Pippa and Colleen explore:Colleen's 30 years in big tech — and why success alone wasn't enoughThe inflection point that changed everything: her daughter leaving for college and the identity crisis that followedWhy "greatness isn't a destination, it's a journey" — and what that really means in practiceThe Second Act Playbook: how to redefine your identity and rediscover your purposeWhy we stop listening to ourselves — and how to find that inner voice againStillness practices for lowering the noise in a busy, always-on worldColleen's daily journaling ritual: setting intentions, practising gratitude for the small thingsHow trusting your gut — even when it's inconvenient — changes everythingPippa also shares her own experience of ignoring a gut instinct early in her career, making this a beautifully candid two-way conversation about purpose, reinvention, and the courage it takes to truly start over. Corporate Anthropology, Culture Change and Rethinking Life's Third Chapter | Andy Simon

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa is joined by the brilliant Dr. Andi Simon — corporate anthropologist, author, speaker, and host of the acclaimed On the Brink with Andi Simon podcast, now with over 468 episodes and ranked #18 in the Top 100 Change podcasts worldwide. Andi invented the role of corporate anthropologist — and it's exactly as fascinating as it sounds. Drawing on decades of experience helping organisations navigate change, she brings an anthropologist's eye to the world of business: stepping back, observing with fresh curiosity, and helping leaders and teams genuinely see, feel and think differently about the cultures they've built. But this conversation is far more than a business discussion. It spans women in leadership, the surprising challenges of retirement, and what happens when we reach the longest stage of life with no plan. Pippa and Andi explore:What corporate anthropology actually is — and how Andi invented the role for herselfUsing the participant-observer approach to unlock culture change in organisationsWomen in leadership: navigating male-dominated spaces whilst staying authentically yourselfWhy retirement is the most under-planned chapter of most people's livesWhat happens to people whose entire identity and social world was built around workThe importance of curiosity, stories, and staying open to reinvention at every ageHow Andi built a 468-episode podcast — and why she's never monetised itBeing unexpectedly named a futurist — and what it means to enjoy the journey without the labelA rich, wide-ranging conversation about change, culture, purpose, and the courage to keep exploring. Somatic Healing, Grace, and Living Authentically | Isabelle Daikeler

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa sits down with Isabelle Daikeler — holistic wellness expert, intuitive healer, and founder of Authenticity Stress Less, her wellness centre in Los Angeles. Isabelle's journey to this work was never planned. For over a decade she was a track and field coach and trainer — until an unexpected inner awakening quite literally moved through her body, changing everything. What followed was a profound somatic experience: three days and nights of her body shaking and unravelling on its own, without instruction or teacher. She now understands that as the moment her body began healing itself — and it set her on the path she walks today. At the core of Isabelle's work is a beautifully simple but radical idea: that the body holds its own wisdom, and that true healing begins when we stop fighting it and start listening. Through her centre, she offers intuitive energy sessions, harmonic egg chamber therapy, and a deeply compassionate approach to stress, alignment, and spiritual wellbeing. In this thoughtful and quietly profound conversation, Pippa and Isabelle explore:Isabelle's unexpected path from athletics coaching to holistic healingWhat somatic healing is — and what happened when her body knew exactly what it neededThe concept of grace as a "soft river" — replacing harsh self-judgment with inner kindnessHow the harmonic egg chamber works and what clients experienceWhat it means to be a channel for healing rather than the source of itWhy authenticity isn't a destination but a daily, living practiceHow to move from reactivity to responsiveness in everyday lifeThe beauty — and the difficulty — of a life shaped by unexpected pivotsWhy vulnerability and the fear of being unlovable keep so many of us stuckThis is a warm, unhurried conversation about what it truly means to come home to yourself. How Education Can Transform the Next Generation | Dr. Jennifer Berry

In this episode of Journey to Purpose, Pippa sits down with Dr. Jennifer Berry — CEO of SmartLab Learning and a transformational leader driving purposeful collaboration between education, industry, and community ecosystems. Jennifer's career path is anything but traditional. From a background in dance and performing arts to senior leadership roles across prominent K-12 organisations, she brings a rare blend of creative discipline and strategic vision to the world of STEM education. In this rich conversation, she shares how the resilience and storytelling she built as a dancer shaped the leader — and educator — she became. At the heart of the discussion is the concept of STEM identity: the belief that every student can belong in STEM spaces, master rigorous challenges, and contribute ideas that matter. Jennifer argues that it's not about who looks like an engineer — it's about creating environments where failure is safe, curiosity is valued, and every learner feels genuinely seen. Together, Pippa and Jennifer explore:Why STEM identity is about belonging and belief, not just aptitudeHow the discipline of dance and performing arts translates into purposeful leadershipWhat AI means for the future of education — and how schools can respondThe importance of listening deeply to the people you serve (including your own children)Why great leaders don't need to know everything — and the freedom that comes with unlearning that pressureHow to create communities that allow people to move between collaboration and solitudeThe role businesses, philanthropists, and entrepreneurs can play in transforming school communitiesWhy Jennifer holds deep hope for the next generation — and what she sees in today's tweens and teensThis is a beautifully human conversation about education, purpose, and what it means to lead with intention — whether you're in a classroom, a boardroom, or anywhere in between.
