What’s Your Story? Being Seen, Heard and Loved through Storytelling

Creating meaningful bonds through storytelling is what saved us from the collective experience of isolation, disconnection and loneliness during the Pandemic. With a deep sense of purpose, spirituality and creativity, Ann Wellman led the Long Beach Community Theatre and women across the nation in developing a close knit community one “talk” at a time. With storytelling as the crux of her work, she navigated ambiguity, a pandemic, and social unrest while bringing a sense of calm, love and support to those around her. A born encourager, Ann helps others find their voice and nurture their talents. In this podcast Ann describes five different community offerings she created for people to feel seen, heard and loved. She creates a sacred space to be together and lift each other up. As a woman of faith, she pushes the envelop and steps into troubled waters with courage, compassion and conviction. Ann is someone you want in your corner. She is so real. A fierce mother, woman and artist, Ann leads with heart. She creates a raw, real space to build women up to support their families, career and society. Through creative writing, story telling and spiritual groups, Ann brings us together to share our humanity in a way that builds connection, community and healing.

Ann is the founder and Artistic Director of the Long Beach Community Theater, a Spiritual Life Coach, and facilitator of Women's Ministry classes, workshops and retreats. She has a BA in Speech Communications and Theatre Arts and has been directing for thirty years. Her most recent directorial projects include Truth Be Told, The Dream Chest, and Silver Bullet - a Rock Opera. She currently is hosting a monthly storytelling night every last Wednesday of the month on Zoom called Speak. Easy. A lifetime teacher, student and collaborator, she loves working with people and helping others to find their voices and recognize their talents. She is a born encourager and would love to cheer you on!

Pilates-The Impact of Your Core on Strength, Balance, Flexibility and Joy

Pilates-The Impact of Your Core on Strength, Balance, Flexibility and Joy

“Pilates is the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit,” explained Joseph Pilates. To shed light on this quote, Karen Washburn, Classical Pilates teacher trainer and instructor discusses how to use Pilates mat work to condition the body by building strength, length, flexibility and balance. She explains how to recover core strength by using the support of the mat.

Karen illuminates the physics of our bodies in relationship to the mat work and equipment. Pilates is effective because it creates resistance, opposition and contrast in the body. Karen shares deep insights on how abdominal strength improves mobility of other limbs. “You are only as old as your spine is flexible,” she stated quoting Pilates. When clients focus on recovering from childbirth or working on their core, Karen explains how to work from the inside out. She sheds light on the power of imagery to connect with the abs and explains how cognitively complex exercises integrate the mind and body.

With an MA in Dance from UCLA, Karen offers a clear and comprehensive overview of the power of Classical Pilates to engage the core. She supports the inclusivity of Pilates to include younger and older clients, athletes, dancers, cancer survivors, and postpartum clients. You can reach Karen on her website: www.axislbc.com to view her fully equipped @gratz_pilates and @gyrotonic studio. Email her at karen@axislbc.com. You can find her on Instagram @axislbc

With over 20 years in the industry, Karen commands a deep understanding of Pilates. Check out the following resources in her podcast.

Karen has trained with many international experts in Classical Pilates, and was most recently a participant in the highly selective Masters program “The Work” with Jay Grimes, one of the last people living to have worked with Joseph Pilates directly. Karen has been a teacher trainer for Power Pilates, based in New York, for the past 13 years.. She is committed to the integrity of teaching Pilates as the creator intended.

Karen has also been practicing and teaching the Gyrotonic method since 1999. She is certified in all aspects of the system, and has been an instructor trainer for the past decade. Healing the Mind, Body and Spirit with Dance Movement

“The movement informs us and when we are open to the possibilities, the healing can occur,” she says. Courtney speaks with integrity and pulls from a deep pool of wisdom not only as a haler, but as a dancer of life. Her experience as a professor and teacher holds space for each client to find themselves in their unique rhythms to experience infinite possibilities joy in their playfulness, creativity and self exploration. “Dance is a constant inquiry where the answers reveal themselves.”

“Whether it’s the beat of your heart or the pulse of your bloodstream, it will play out for you.”
