Makana Risser Chai ,

Goes deep and wide in Hawaiian and local culture

As a malihini here for only 25 years, I love how this podcast goes deep and wide in Hawaiian and local culture. My first listen was Keao NeSmith, whose translation work I have admired for many years. His mana’o about ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi was amazing—and here I am second-guessing my use of ‘okina and kahakō lol. I loved what he said about haole and aloha and “mana leo” and so much more. Other highlights have been Kamaka Pili, Kelly Hu, Sudden Rush and others from journalism, movies, sports, and music. The most fun so far was Frank Delima, Andy Bumatai and Angie T. I was laughing so hard I might have been a danger on the road—and I learned a lot about local comedy. Through it all is Kamaka with his nahenahe style taking us through the highs and lows of history, trauma, culture, hope and joy. Mahalo.
