    Drag Queen Flamy Grant

    Drag Queen Flamy Grant

Wow! What a fabulous talent. What an enormous presence in any room. And what an interesting and educational conversation!

Matthew Blake (they/them) started dressing in drag at age 37. They were raised in a devout Christian family in Appalachian North Carolina. Flamy Grant's CD "Bible Belt Baby" topped the Christian music chart and has both inspired... and caused controversy. (I definitely recommend that you buy/listen/watch!)

In our "Kibbitz," we talk about choosing their name; the influence of Amy Grant; how long it takes to make up; the source of the lovely clothing; and how they choose gigs. We discuss mental health and suicide as well as the good and evil aspects of social media.

Please watch this fascinating and fun conversation... and consider sharing it!

    MDOT Sec'y Paul Wiedefeld

    MDOT Sec'y Paul Wiedefeld

Transportation is the backbone of our economy. It governs how we get to work and play.

The Maryland Department of Transportation is a multi-modal agency that oversees highways, the BWI Airport, our Port of Baltimore, Metro, and much more. Secretary Paul Wiedefeld has more than 30 years of public and private experience that has prepared him for this role.

In my "kibbitz" with Secretary Wiedefeld, we covered the landscape of the challenges facing MDOT each day. How can we make our roadways safer? What's the lingering impact of COVID on commuting patterns? How satisfied are customers with BWI Airport? What's the impact of the Port on our economy? How are things going with the Purple Line, the ICC, the MVA? Describe the new plans for expanding 495 and 270. How can we create "greener" transportation options? How can we make it easier for people with disabilities to commute? How does MDOT work with other Cabinet Departments?

Sec'y Katie Savage, Dep't of Information Technology

Sec'y Katie Savage, Dep't of Information Technology

The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) is helmed by Secretary Katie Savage in the Moore/Miller Administration. With a background in both the public and private sectors (and the Peace Corps!), she was sworn in when she was 39 weeks pregnant. Women leading in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) aren't common enough yet, so she provides an important role model. More than almost any other department, DoIT is integral to everything we do. Economic development, climate, health care, social services, public safety-- they all rely on technology. Secretary Savage is working to be sure that Maryland stays ahead on cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

You'll both enjoy and learn a lot from our informative chat!

Agriculture Sec'y Kevin Atticks (Maryland / Interview / Agriculture / Compost / Invasive Species / Farming)

Agriculture Sec'y Kevin Atticks (Maryland / Interview / Agriculture / Compost / Invasive Species / Farming)

For the very first time in my 3+ years of hosting "Kibbitzing with Kagan," I am chatting with a guest for the second time! Kevin Atticks, formerly the CEO of "Grow & Fortify," is now the Maryland Secretary of Agriculture.

In this role, he continues his focus on economic development and value-added agriculture while significantly expanding his portfolio. We chatted about everything from chicken litter and agricultural run-off into the Chesapeake Bay to the Styrofoam ban I sponsored (with now-Comptroller Brooke Lierman) and affordable produce for lower-income Marylanders. Dealing with invasive species and creating composting opportunities are current challenges. And Program Open Space and the preservation of family farms is part of planning for our future.
