Grow G1 In Joshua 9:14, the Israelites “sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.” Why do you think they skipped seeking God at this moment, especially after everything they had just experienced with Him? G2 The Gibeonites’ deception seemed convincing. What are some modern situations where circumstances or appearances might lead us to make decisions without seeking God? G3 The Israelites had just heard the blessings and curses from Deuteronomy 28:1–2 at Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. What does their failure to inquire of God reveal about the gap between knowing God’s word and actually living it? G4 The leaders kept their oath to the Gibeonites even after discovering the deception (Joshua 9:18–20; Numbers 30:2). What does this teach us about integrity and keeping our word? G5 The sermon asked several reflective questions: Do you believe God loves you, knows what is best for you, and cares about your decisions? Which of these is hardest for you to believe in practice, and why? G6 The sermon described taking time to quiet your heart, ask God a question, and listen in prayer. God: _____________ Me: _____________ God: _____________   When you feel the conversation is done close in a moment of quiet or spoken gratitude or by reading out loud Thomas Merton’s prayer. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. Why do you think that was your response? (Deut 21:10–14) Grow G1 The sermon encouraged us to “take off our Nike shoes and put on Ancient Near East sandals,” and to bring good assumptions about God’s character into hard texts. Why is understanding cultural context — and remembering who God has already revealed Himself to be — essential when reading difficult passages? (Deut 4:32; Deut 8:1; Deut 9:7) G2 The idea of the “Williamson Turn” described a slow, redemptive shift in culture — God gradually steering His people away from brutality toward dignity and protection.     20260222 The Giant Sermon (Deut 2)

Why? Grow G1 In Deuteronomy 2:1–3, God says, “You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north.” Where in your life might God be saying, “You’ve circled this long enough — it’s time to move forward”? G2 In Deuteronomy 2:10–12, 20–22, Moses explains that the Moabites, Ammonites, & Edomites (Israel’s relatives) had already driven out formidable peoples like the Anakites, Rephaim, and Horites. Why do you think God intentionally led Israel past these examples of victory before they faced their own battles? What might that teach us about how God builds courage in us? G3 The first generation saw the giants and retreated (Numbers 13:27–33), but the second generation was surrounded by evidence that giants could fall. How does the story you rehearse — failure or victory — shape your faith and obedience? G4 The sermon suggested that Israel’s battles were part of a deeper spiritual conflict (see Genesis 6:4; Numbers 13:33; Ephesians 6:10–13). How does understanding that our struggle is “not against flesh and blood” affect the way we approach temptation, fear, or long-standing patterns in our lives? G5 Some scholars (like Michael Heiser) argue that the references to the Nephilim and Rephaim point to corrupted bloodlines and a larger spiritual rebellion narrative (see Genesis 6:4). Whether or not we fully understand the details, what does this perspective suggest about the seriousness of spiritual compromise and God’s commitment to preserving His redemptive plan through Israel — ultimately leading to Christ? Where have you seen God bring transformation, either in your own life or in someone else’s? G2 Clean water didn’t just change health — it changed education, safety, dignity, and opportunity for entire villages. What does that teach us about how meeting practical needs can open the door for deeper spiritual transformation?
