Alright, so I’m absolutely a beginner—have not even been surfing for a year yet, but I honestly contribute the escalation of my development to be heavily influenced by listening to The Kookcast. Before surfing I had never even listened to podcasts, never. But as I was looking to pick up some nuggets and insight on what it means to surf I found my way here. Dude—the true brilliance of The Kook Cast is that it has advocated for a calm and collective mindset to how I approach surfing and completely prepared me for situations before I even knew I would encounter them. For example: I went out to surf the other day and when I was packing everything i had that uneasy feeling that I forgot something, but I double checked and assured myself it was all there so I took off for the water. When I was about half way to the beach it hit me like a ton of bricks: I had indeed forgot something...it was my leash! F*ck. But I was at the point of no return. So I went and checked out the water and there was actually a lot of ppl, more than usual which made me uncomfortable but then I saw that further up the beach there was a less crowded space—since there was only maybe one other person and he seemed to know what he was doing, I chose this as my spot to test my dexterity and comfort without the leash. Dude, I'm completely proud of the results! I kept control of my board the whole time! There were a couple instances where I somehow disconnected to the board but I was so swift to grab it and rein it back in...even on a wipeout i held onto the board the whole time. And later in the sesh when I moved a bit up the beach as ppl cleared out, I rode into the beach and my nose hit the sand and projected a nose dive action: first thing i did was cover my head for protection then after a couple seconds I turned and grabbed my board safely as it was politely parked next to me. And although I am proud of the outcome this isn’t to give myself praise, the only reason I had been able to pull this sesh off is because of the education, awareness and confidence ive gotten from listening intently to the Kook Cast. Thanks Coach Ev and Coach Chris for helping me find peace with my practice and guidance in how to develop fundamentals for being a good surfer even as a beginner. I loved the feeling of riding leashless, but would have never done it had I not been keeping close to my board for weeks leading up to my “left the leash at home” incident. I often tell my friends about my online surf coaches cause y’all keep me stoked and informed alllllll week allll day—even when there’s not waves I just love to get out and strengthen my paddle! I just bought the surf videos on the Continuum site too! STOKED!! Keep it up! YEWWWWWWW! 🤙🏾🤙🏾
