Bay Native Circle – September 9, 2026

In honor of Leonard Peltier’s birthday coming up on September 12th, Tony Gonzales introduces an interview conducted with Leonard by Democracy Now!’s host Amy Goodman, this was “his first extended television and radio broadcast interview since his release to home confinement in February. Before his commutation by former President Joe Biden, the 81-year-old Peltier spent nearly 50 years behind bars. Peltier has always maintained his innocence for the 1975 killing of two FBI officers. He is expected to serve the remainder of his life sentences under house arrest at the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Nation in Belcourt, North Dakota. In a wide-ranging conversation, we spoke to Peltier about his case, his time in prison, his childhood spent at American Indian boarding school and his later involvement in the American Indian Movement (AIM) and more. “We still have to live under that, that fear of losing our identity, losing our culture, our religion,” Peltier says about his continued commitment to Indigenous rights. “The fight for, the struggle still goes on for me. Bay Native Circle -9/2/2026 Morning Star Gali hosts

This is Morning Star Gali. Tonight’s program features an update by Amy Juan of the International Treaty Council about the situation at the Tohono O’dam Reservation Border. Please follow the updates that our news department is reporting on also. We will also have an update on AB18181, along with some statements from the press conference related to AB18181. From the conference we will hear from the Vice-Chair of the Yosemite Miwok, along with Waylon Coats, an archeologist who is also Miwok regarding the proposed road thru their ancestral territory. We were also fortunate to interview Joan Anselmo, former National Park Service Superintendent who is part of “Friends of the Moose Corridor” where there is a proposed bike path through Grand Tetons National Park, which would destroy many archeological sites in that area, along with interfering with the Grizzly Bear habitant…as one person posted..”what could go wrong having bikers through grizzly bear territory? ___________________________ This program was co-produced by Morning Star Gali, Loyen Redhawk Gali, and Catherine Jackson, and Falcón. Tonight’s radio program “Bay Native Circle” August 26th 2026, Tony Gonzales interviewed David Garcia, enrolled member of the Tohono’ Oodam Tribal nation, about a federal court decision rendered August 14, 2026 that denied blocking its decision to construct the Wall across their 62 mile reservation on the southern border with Mexico. Tony Gonzales also interviewed Joey Williams of the Kawaiisu Tribe of Kern County, California. They talked about the US 250 anniversary and also California Native history including legislative bills such as SB 1105 and AB 1581. Our first guest Julian Brave NoiseCat is an Oakland-raised author who has garnered wide acclaim and awards for his first book We Survived the Night. The first indigenous filmmaker in history nominated for an Academy Award, he talks with us about his moving documentary Sugarcane which lays bare the horrific abuses of Canadian residential schools, focusing on the one where his own family members were sent and where his infant father was rescued from an incinerator. Claire Greensfelder and Toby McLeod discuss the new Native Vision Film Series at Berkeley’s David Brower Center featuring In the Light of Reverence, Sugarcane, and The Eternal Song on Aug 14, Sep 16 and Oct 18. The 7th annual free Native Ways Festival happens Saturday, Sep 26 at the Ohlone Park. Condolences are offered to the family of Pit River artist Jean LaMarr who recently joined the ancestors and whose work at the Ohlone Park will still be honored in a planned celebration. Morning Star’s stand in hosts are Sabah Williams and Loyen Red Hawk, producer Cathy Jackson, executive producer Janeen Antoine. This week Morning Star focuses on Education with opening comments from Richard Moves Camp on the importance of education. Sabah Williams interviews Nizhoni Ellenwood about Student Services at America River College and sings a Bear Head sister song representing the Red Lightning Power Singers. Loyen Red Hawk interviews Allisa Yazzie from Northwest Indian College about her introduction to Native science and how it launched her studies of indigenous science knowledge. Loyen then interviews Gabrielle Lira about her graduation ceremony and her work as a fellow supported by Indigenous Justice as an undergraduate working on MMIW programming within her community, and solidarity with non-federally recognized tribes particularly with work around MMIW. Morning Star closes by calling for support for Oak Flats and presenting a statement from Louise Benally about the importance of resistance and support for the land and sacred sites in the Southwest against the devil in charge and the beast looking at Chaco Canyon for its resources. Bay Native Circle – July 15, 2026 – Janeen Antoine interviews Sonny Hirakawa

Janeen Antoine opens the show with a song sung by a Kanaka Maoli man, Sonny Hirakawa, whom she met near Hilo on the island of Hawaii on July 4, the 250th celebration of the U.S. Independence Day. Driving from the town of Volcano near the active Kilauea Crater, she was thinking to find some good trouble in Hilo, near the birthplace of King Kamehaha, the legendary warrior and chief who unified the Hawaiian Islands in 1810 and established the Kingdom of Hawaii. Instead she found the good energy of Sonny who explained his recently examined Kanaka genealogy, including his great ancestor Havahava who was closely connected to King Kamehameha. He spoke of the impacts this has had on his life and how it is manifest in his values and actions. He has a song on You tube called Higher by Creed Ukulele style, @TūpahuAroha. He also opens with a song by by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole. Bay Native Circle presents special guests and explores today’s Native issues, peoples, cultures, music & events on Wednesday evenings at 7 PM with rotating hosts in weekly order with Morning Star Gali, Eddie Madril, Janeen Antoine and Tony Gonzales.
