LAYERS WITHIN: EPISODE 2 - THE INVISIBLE LOAD OF MOTHERHOOD

For many mothers (She/Her) the load of motherhood is so invisible because we function through them. The load is so invisible because we soldier on and make things happen. This was a wholesome room with many who joined the stage and shared. I am sure what is shared in this episode many will resonate with and even 'aha' to because we have normalised carrying and bearing the load that many can never even identify it as a load There is also a notion that parenthood or motherhood is supposed to be a bed of roses and it is not. It is hard work, it demands that we give uo so much and avail ourselves very often and it is simply not easy. It has its rewards but there is a lot of work that we need to invest in as mothers and parents as they grown up What i love about the whole journey is that it is a learning experience for both the children and the parents. And it is to remind ourselves to allow ourselves space and grace as we parent. There is more episodes coming as our rooms are 3.5hours long and I am excited for you to hear all the great stuff that has been shared within the Layers Within rooms on Clubhouse

Layers Within: E2 - NOT ALL BABIES GO HOME

Episode TWO of the series Loss & bereavement from the room held on the 12th July on Clubhouse. This is a continuation. Please listen to Episode 1 to make sense of this episode as the conversation in the room went on for a long time, there are FOUR episodes from that room alone This one is a taboo topic and I am here to normalise the topic as a Bereavement Doula. In this episode we hear from Nicole whose baby died in Utero and her own advise from a mother's perspective. The turmoil, the trials, the grieving process and the strength that transpired in this room still had me tearing up both with sadness and grace as they were comfortable to let others hear their stories and shared on my platform too. Do you have a story to share also? It can be about anything that you want others to hear, to share a different perspective maybe? Please reach out to me directly, I will interview you where you are. SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTING

This is a poem for US all. Especially for the moments when nobody really gets us, when they all believe we are coping and don't need checking up, when they think we have got it together when all you need is to hear someone say 'I hear you, I get it, I am here for you' Special needs parenting is HARD. There are many challenges that come with it. Many objections, many decisions, moments where you choose to miss out because it is so tiring having to repeat yourself time and time again about 'what your child has' or what it means for you as a family. So I was very glad to bump into this poem because I think we need to validate the hardships of this way of parenting and send strength to each other from all corners of the world

There were quite a few parents who joined the stage to share their own experiences, newly trained and experienced doulas also shared their questions, perspectives etc. There was a lot of FIRST hand insightful wisdom shared by the bereaved parents also so that we may get a glimpse of what their experiences felt like but also what helped them, what they hoped was done differently and how you can support in this way also should you find yourself in the situation as a birth worker There will be a training coming in the winter with this regard, for doulas, birth workers of any level and anyone else who feels called to learn how to hold space in these moments. Layers Within: MOTHERHOOD JOURNEY - THE INVISIBLE LOAD

Room of Monday 28th July. Often times as people we tend to omit the struggles that are not so obvious or easy to see. This room was very insightful. Layer Within: The FOURTH Trimester - A RITE of Passage

From room held on 7th June: Often times, we hear so many variations of how this phase is looked upon within communities even today in 2021, where many still think a newborn mother 'resting' is lazy. I am honoured to bring the realities about the importance of honouring this phase because ancestrally, it IS a RITE of passage and we were NEVER meant to go through it alone as WOMBMEN The postpartum is a moment for rest, recuperation, finding yourselves and we rave about this topic in our weekly rooms on Clubhouse. Layers Within: NICU POEM

As a NICU parent myself I remember all the worry going through my head in that journey with no story to hold on to. I remember once the Drs asking me to go to the parents room to make myself a cup of tea because the procedure they were going to do to my son may have been invasive for me to watch as his parent. I recall clearly why I broke down in the parents room alone. My husband couldn't be there that day, he had to stay with the other children at home and it hit me how not going through it alone meant you carried the load of worry with each other. I craved to hear another parents story but there was none i could find. I yearned to read another parents story but I realised many of these stories are not shared to start with because unless you have walked in the same shoes, its not that simple to simply 'understand' This is a poem for US. I hope I have managed to summarise those worries and thoughts within it. There is more coming x

On this platform we will be sharing those stories that are never normally spoken about so that they may become your companion in your own journeys wherever you may be at There is so much comfort and wisdom in the stories that other share. We hope that the ones you will hear will help you reconnect and ground yourselves, that they will have profound impact in your own stories Why Layers within? Layers Within: Sibling connection with a disability

This was a one on one moment with my 9 year old sharing her experience as a sister to a brother living with health challenges. I was humbled to hear it first hand myself because it is not the norm that children would share what they feel, and we encourage that within our home to make time to discuss these challenges and tribulations. Lucia explains in her own words the hardships, her understanding and also the joy in being the older sibling and how everything shapes the kind of friends she chooses. Her moments of sadness but also acceptance
