Our episode today brings you tales of the utterly unpredictable, the charmingly aloof, and the irresistibly cute, all wrapped up in one bundle of fur – the domestic cat.

It's adapted based on an article written by Laoshe 老舍(1899-1966).
老舍 is a highly influential Chinese writer and playwright known for his significant contributions to 20th-century Chinese literature. Born in Beijing, he had a deep connection with the city and its people, which is often reflected in his works.
Lao She's writing is characterized by a keen sense of social observation and a subtle, often satirical, sense of humor. His works offer profound insights into the complexities of human nature and the evolving social landscapes of his time.
Some of his most notable works include:
"Rickshaw Boy" (骆驼祥子): This novel is one of Lao She's most celebrated works and tells the story of the struggles of a rickshaw puller in Beijing. It explores themes of poverty, ambition, and the challenges faced by the working class in the city. "Teahouse" (茶馆): A renowned play, "Teahouse" is considered a classic of modern Chinese drama. Set in a Beijing teahouse, it spans 50 years of Chinese history, offering a rich portrayal of society's transformation during that period. "Cat" (猫): This novella tells the story of a stray cat's experiences in 1930s Beijing. Through the cat's encounters with various people, it explores the complexities of human society and social hierarchies.

Back to China - A Conversation with Liulang
In this episode, Yang Liulang shared with us his recent trip to China with his family. They went through layovers and long flights to finally arrive in Beijing. In Beijing, they reunited with family and tried to immerse their children in Chinese culture by visiting famous landmarks, but many required advance reservations.
This trip gave their children a more direct understanding of Chinese culture and the various aspects of Chinese life, including using WeChat Pay and Meituan for daily activities. The only challenge was the prevalence of smoking in public places.

    Enjoy.

In this episode, we'll take you on a journey into Rui's childhood memories in a place called "Gou li" 🌄. It was all mountains, forests, and hardworking parents, and her grandparents from Shandong who added a dash of flavor to their lives 🌳👨‍👩‍👦‍👦.
As a kid,  Rui was a bit of a loner, but that just made her imagination run wild 🧚‍♂️ - from pretending to be a kung-fu hero 🥋 to catching frogs after the rain 🐸. And oh, the frog-catching, that turned into some delicious frog dishes 🍲.
Join us as we share the vivid sights, sounds, and tastes of Rui's formative years, painting a vivid picture of a simpler, yet incredibly rich, childhood 🎨🌟.

Useful and realistic

This is a useful podcast. Both speakers give you a realistic sense of actual Chinese. It doesn’t put me to sleep like most language materials.

Thank you

My favorite podcast! 我爱你们!

Great podcast but patron pages disorganized

As a household Mandarin speaker and story lover who needs to improve my vocabulary before visiting Mom in Taiwan, I really love this podcast. However, when I joined as a Patreon I was hoping for transcripts (as promised at $5 level), but then was locked out of MOST story transcripts and was prompted to level up at $7 per month. I don’t mind spending more money, but I don’t like it when I was promised a product at the $5 level then denied that product. Additionally, I was hoping to organize my learning through the patreon membership, but the patreon page and the website are both so disorganized and many portions are locked. So terrible so confusing. After hours of trying to make sense of the sites I gave up. Too bad. What a waste of my time!!
