Learning To Fail

Hi there, welcome, and thank you for tuning in. My name is Jason Scholder and this is "Learning To Fail." Everyone Has Stories They Like to Tell. These Are the Stories They Haven't Told. Each week I interview people who matter... or at least people who matter to me. Some of them are friends, others are teachers, and a lot of them are comedians. I never know where these stories are going to take us, but it's usually somewhere amazing. As this podcast continues to fail, I mean grow, I hope to interview some of the world’s top comics, thinkers and visionaries. I love Learning to Fail and I hope you’ll enjoy listening to these conversations as much as I enjoy having them.

Episode 41 — Cliff Cash — All In and Only Half Way There

COMEDIAN Cliff Cash sits down with Jason, Mid-quarantine, at a safe distance, on this very special episode of Learning To Fail. Cliff just released his first comedy album, "Half Way There," available on iTunes, and wherever you get music. Buy Cliff Cash’s Comedy Album on iTunes Cliff Cash is the funniest guy you haven’t heard of (yet). Kevin Nealon called him a mix between Rory Scovel and Bill Hicks. Kristine Levine of Portlandia called his set “Chef’s kiss perfect”. His style of comedy has been called “more than just funny” and said to “embody the new south”. A south yearning to be seen as more than camouflage and racism, a generation of young Americans bucking the often archaic values and dogma they were raised on. His brand of humor fearlessly tackles subjects of racism, homophobia, greed, war, loss, death, divorce and the danger of ignorance in pop culture and music. One moment he’s using a satirical uber conservative redneck character to illuminate the fallacies of the far right talking points. The next moment he cleverly dissects some of today’s most absurd rap lyrics. Cash remains dynamic and unique from the time he steps on stage until he says goodnight. Episode 40 — Mo Alexander — Back From the Dead and Still Killing as Always!

Comedian Mo Alexander joins Jason Scholder on this episode of Learning To Fail. Mo is a touring comedian from Memphis, TN. Jason and Mo met under unfortunate circumstances, at the memorial service and tribute show to the late, great, Spanky Brown. (After listening to Jason's interview with Mo, you can listen to Jason's interview with Spanky here.) But they hit it off right away, made each other laugh, and have been trying to perform together ever since! They actually had a gig on the books back in October, but it got canceled because they venue wasn't quite ready to be open yet. Mo plays Asheville every year, and this time they were able to squeeze in a long-overdue podcast interview. Mo will be on episode 5 of the upcoming Amazon Prime Show, "Punching Below the Bible Belt" coming out later this month! Enjoy!! ABOUT MO When Mo Alexander hits the stage, it’s clear that you’re in the hands of a man who knows what he’s doing. With comedy influences such as Bill Hicks, Paul Mooney, and Richard Pryor, Mo combines intelligence and debauchery into a product that is just as funny as it is important.  With an ability to access both the smartest and the stupidest parts of your brain, there’s a reason this comedy phenom has been headlining comedy clubs nationwide for over 20 years. Mo began his professional full-time comedy career in July 1996 featuring in clubs throughout the United States and by 1999 he was headlining. To say that Mo is funny is like saying that Michelangelo was a good painter. Taking all of life’s absurdities and creating a night of hysterical laughter is why Mo Alexander is one of this industries greats. Mo takes a lifetime of experience and insight and transforms them into some of the most ingenious laugh riots you will ever experience in your life. Not for the faint of heart or mind, intelligent and hard-hitting are two terms that best describe what everyone that has ever been to a Mo Alexander Show will experience. Nothing compares to the energy of a room when Mo is through with it. Watching Mo Alexander is a night of hilarity and mischief that one won’t soon forget. He usually tries to leave you with the underlying message,”I’m trying to save the world, one comedy show at a time.” After a night with Mo you realize that not only were you entertained, you’re changed. Episode 39 — Aadil Palkhivala — A Natural Born Yogi

Yoga Leader, Teacher and visionary, Aadil Palkhivala, joins Jason on this episode of Learning To Fail. Aadil is one of the top yoga teachers in the world, and has become a personal friend of Jason's since their first meeting in San Francisco, in 2009. They have embarked on creative projects together, collaborated on yoga prop designs and implementation, and shared numerous personal stories and sagas. Jason considers Aadil to be one of his most influential yoga teachers and always learns something valuable from his encounters with Aadil. This unparalleled episode of LTF is no exception. Aadil, and his wife, Savitri, are the co-founders of Purna Yoga and Alive & Shine Yoga Center in Bellevue, Washington. ABOUT AADIL For nearly thirty years, Aadil has been regarded as a “teacher of teachers,” and many of the world’s top yoga instructors have studied with him. Aadil is the co-founder of Purna Yoga, a holistic synthesis of yogic traditions based on the work of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. ABOUT SAVITRI Renowned Meditation Master and visionary, Savitri was born in India and grew up in Bombay until the age of 7 when she moved to America with her family. Savitri is the founder of Heartfull® Meditation & Lifestyle, and co-founder of Alive & Shine® Center and the Purna Yoga College®. READ MORE about Aadil and Savitri here WHY AADIL IS SO IMPORTANT TO JASON In 2005, LTF's own Jason Scholder, invented an ergonomic yoga prop called the Three Minute Egg. In an effort to introduce his product to the world, he approached a multitude of master yogis and asked them for input on his invention. While some yogis of Aadil's stature turned their nose up at the idea that someone with as little yoga experience as Jason would have the audacity to redesign the iconic yoga block, Aadil simply saw its potential right away. Unfettered by the blind adherence to tradition, Aadil saw Jason's Egg as a beneficial alternative to the age-old rectangle whose limitations nobody had bothered to question. Aadil embraced the Egg, and made it all but mandatory in the many yoga studios around the world that represent the teachings of Purna Yoga. Jason feels eternal gratitude to Aadil for helping people see the magic in his yoga invention, and was further humbled by Aadil's willingness to take time out of his extremely busy life to sit for this interview. This is a very special episode. We hope you enjoy it. Comedy Agent & Manager, Chuck Johnson joins Jason on this episode of Learning To Fail. Chuck has found his niche and risen to the top of the College Comedy Market. The secret of his success has been thinking big, but staying small. Of all the people Jason has met doing comedy, Chuck is one of the nicest and most generous. And if you ask anyone who knows him, they'll tell you the same. He ends every conversation by saying, "Feel free to call me if you ever have any questions or need any advice." And he backs it up! It isn't easy being both successful and popular, but Chuck has figured out the formula and he's not even all that secretive about it. Episode 36 — Ritch Shydner — A Historian of Stand-Up

Comedian Ritch Shydner joins Jason on this episode of Learning to Fail Podcast. Jason was introduced to Ritch by some mutual friends who thought they might have a bit in common. It's much more serious than that. These guys love each other! This interview took place the first time they ever met in person, and will not lose your attention for a minute. Take a deep dive into the world of stand up comedy with a guy who's done the Tonight Show, with Johnny Carson, 14 times! He's a legend in the comedy world and a cool, humble dude. He's played every club in the country and is now traveling the circuit with his 1-man show about the history of stand up comedy. ABOUT RITCH Learn all there is to know about Ritch at RitchShydner.com Ritch's new book, Kicking Through The Ashes: My Life as a Stand-up in the 1980's Comedy Explosion, is OUT NOW! Read a story from the book here.. In the 1980’s, Ritch made numerous appearances on TV, including Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. He did an HBO half-hour special, “One Night Stand.” He played Al Bundy’s co-worker on “Married with Children”, and made guest appearances on many other TV shows, such as “Designing Women” and “Roseanne.” Ritch was able to translate his modest success on TV into an obscure film career, appearing in Steve Martin’s, "Roxanne," and Eddie Murphy's, "Beverly Hills Cop II," before moving on to minor roles on smaller pictures. Ritch wrote for sitcoms such as "Roseanne", "The Jeff Foxworthy Show," and HBO’s “The Mind of the Married Man.” Ritch wrote material for Jeff Foxworthy’s Grammy nominated comedy albums, “Totally Committed,” and “Big Fun.” He also wrote for Ron White and Jay Leno. In 2006 Ritch was co-author of a book on stand-up, “I Killed.” Order "I Killed" here! In 2010 Ritch produced and performed in an award winning documentary on the world of stand-up comedy, “I Am Comic.” This movie can be seen on Netflix. Currently Ritch is writing a movie adaptation for HBO of Bill Maher's book, "True Story". Jay Leno: “And remember, Shydner, don’t tell anyone you wrote those jokes for me.” Jerry Seinfeld: “Ritch Shydner is a terrific comedy writer and definitely one of the good guys.” Jeff Foxworthy: "Ritch helped me write two albums, both of which were nominated for Grammys. I've always thought that he was one of the best stand-ups ever." Bill Maher: Back in the day, in the dingy ratskellers in which we learned our craft, Ritch Shydner was always the comic the other comics came into the room to watch, because he was the funniest. That hasn’t changed, and I’m afraid neither have the ratskellers. EPISODE 35 — Mike Elis — The Artisan of Entertainment Management

Producer/Comedian Mike Elis joins Jason on this episode of Learning To Fail. Mike was the first person to ever give Jason a real shot, on a real stage, in front of a real audience. Since then they've fallen in, fallen out and fallen back. But overcoming adversity is what builds lasting relationships. And now they're BFFs for reals. Mike brought Jason his favorite nosh (Lox Shmear on a Cinnamon Raison bagel — Don't judge him!), which Jason proceeds to eat, while they talk, for the first half hour of the show. This seemed like a gesture of kindness at the time, but in hindsight may have equally been just a gag that Mr. Elis could capitalize on both during the interview and on FaceBook. Mike Elis is a part time comic emcee, and to say that Mike has done a lot in his four years in the entertainment business is an understatement. Mike has opened for the likes of Jon Reep, Pam Stone, Emo Philips, Judy Tenuta, and even recently co-starred in a stage show with 80s pop icon Molly Ringwald. Mike recently left the comedy stage to take over as Director of Entertainment for the Abbeville Opera House. He also has a syndicated column for entertainment and comedy in South Carolina, called “A Slice of Mike.” Starting in April, Mike will have his own radio show on WZLA 92.9FM, a show titled "The Mike on the Mic" show. The first ever Jewish-run classic country music and comedy show ever in South Carolina. Also, Mike Elis is writing his first movie script, titled "My Demons Come Out on Stage," a film about dealing with depression and PTSD and how that struggle plays into being an entertainer. Episode 34 — Mia Jackson — Steppin' On My Biscuits

Comedian Mia Jackson joins Jason for this episode of Learning to Fail. Jason met Mia for the first time when he hosted one of her first ever shows in Asheville. They talk about everything from how Mia got started in comedy to what it was like being a semi-finalist on Last Comic Standing to the preconceived notions people have of her comedy before she starts her set. Mia has come a long way since we recorded this interview. She’s been in several movies, toured stadiums with Amy Schumer and filmed her own half hour special for Comedy Central! We’re lucky we got her when we did because she is untouchable now. She’s just as kind and humble as ever, but she’s too dang busy workin’! Find out everything there is to know about Mia at MiaJackson.com Mia Jackson is a bonafide Georgia peach (that's Georgian for “native”). In 2017, she was selected as a New Face by the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival and Atlanta's Creative Loafing named her the Critic's Choice Best Stand-Up in the city. She has toured nationally with Amy Schumer and is a featured comic at festivals and clubs across the country. Her first stand up special aired in October 2018 as part of Unprotected Sets on EPIX. Mia has appeared on NickMom's Night Out, Viceland, Comedy Central's This Week at the Comedy Cellar and was a semi-finalist on Season 9 of NBC's Last Comic Standing. Her Comedy Central half hour special debuted in November 2019.  SUPPORT OUR PODCAST http://learningtofailpodcast.com/donate/ FOLLOW LTF ON SOCIAL MEDIA FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/LTFpod/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ltfpodcast/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/LTFpodcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcKNLjg1Qx7zwEM-DL1OVLg FOLLOW JASON ON SOCIAL MEDIA FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/jasonscholder Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/MidlifeComic/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MidlifeComic YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLYUlmB-dvnPQ49ZLXzmoYQ FIND US ONLINE JasonScholder.com LearningToFail.com SUPPORT OUR PODCAST http://learningtofailpodcast.com/donate/
