    Legends Podcast #794: The Shining (1980)

    From the depths of his birth year - 1980 - Beef brings us a tale of horror and suspense based on Stephen King's classic novel. Yes, for the second month in a row, Beef picked a movie based on a story by Stephen King. Redrum! Redrum! Redrum! Yes, it is that movie, the one directed by Stanley Kubrick and all-but disowned by King himself. Starring Jack Nicholson as Jack, a struggling writer who takes a winter gig at a mountain hotel… Seriously, the first red flag here is that a resort in Colorado can't find a way to make it "economically viable" to stay open during ski season. Who runs this place? In tow are Jack's wife, played by Shelley Duvall, and their precognitive son, Danny. Hijinks ensue when the place turns out to be haunted, driving everyone insane just as a snowstorm cuts them off from the outside world. In 1980, critical reviews were lukewarm at best, accusations of on-set cruelty swirled like snowflakes, and its bestselling author's own chilly response to the adaptation tarnished the film's release. However, time has since been kind, and the film has been critically reassessed and is now listed as one of the greatest horror films ever made.     Legends Podcast #793: Aug-Heist: Heat (1995)

    Aug-Heist comes to a close with this 1995 Michael Mann film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, sharing screen time for the first time in their careers. Mann already made this movie once, in 1989 as a made-for-TV movie called L.A. Takedown. In this iteration, De Niro plays the leader of a sophisticated band of thieves while Pacino plays the hardboiled detective obsessed with taking them down. The film features an all-star ensemble including Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Wes Studi, Dennis Haysbert, Jon Voight, and a young Natalie Portman. Critics praised the film, yet it opened behind family-friendly fare like Jumanji and Toy Story. Retrospective reviews have named it one of the most influential crime films of all time, inspiring works as diverse as The Dark Knight and Grand Theft Auto, there is a sequel/prequel, Heat 2, is due out next year.     Legends Podcast #792: Aug-Heist: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

    Our first-ever Aug-Heist pick, 1973's The Sting, saw Paul Newman and Robert Redford re-team with director George Roy Hill for a Depression-era crime caper. Now, we're reviewing the 1969 film that brought the three of them back together for the first time. The film, from a script by legendary writer William Goldman, is loosely based on the real-life Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker (Newman), and his partner Harry Longabaugh, (Redford), who in 1888 are on the lam after a string of train robberies. The film also stars Katherine Ross as Etta Place, Ted Cassidy as Harvey Logan, and features a soundtrack by Burt Bacharach. While audiences didn't storm the theaters to see it on first release, retrospective reviews have been favorable and the film did win four Oscars. In 2006, the Writers Guild of America ranked Goldman's screenplay 11th on its list of the 101 Greatest Screenplays ever written.     Legends Podcast #791: Aug-Heist: Cruella (2021)

    In 2021, I, Tonya and future Supergirl director Craig Gillespie unleashed the live-action origin story of Disney's 101 Dalmatians baddie Cruella De Vil. Emma Stone dons the iconic black-and-white wig as the dognapping fashionista, here an orphaned up-and-coming designer in '70s punk rock London who also does crime. Emma Thompson plays her foil, the Baroness, an established couturière, in the story by The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. With her little dog, too, comes an ensemble cast including Mark Strong, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, John McCrea, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Released in the dog days of the Covid-19 pandemic, the flick floundered at the box office while getting a simultaneous PVOD release for stay-at-home viewing, but still managed to fleece audiences for $233 million. However, it did go on to appropriately earn an Oscar for Best Costume Design for Jenny Beavan, and was also spotted among the nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.     Legends Podcast #790: Aug-Heist: The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

    Legends Podcast is cracking open the cinematic vault and bringing you a whole month of cons, capers, and car chases! Whether you're a wrongfully-convicted banker or an aspiring fashion designer, you'll find the big score right here on our podcast. This is Aug-Heist! This week takes us to Maine's Shawshank Prison for a 1994 film directed by Frank Darabont based on a Stephen King novella. When Andy Dufresne is locked up for a crime he claims to be innocent of, he'll go to extraordinary lengths to survive, including ripping off the crooked warden and planning an elaborate escape. With an ensemble cast including Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore, the film bombed at the box office upon initial release. However, the film scored strong reviews and seven Oscar nominations, and with word-of-mouth finally catching up, it went on to become the top-rented film of 1995. The film began airing regularly on the cable network TNT, turning it into something of a pop culture phenomenon. Today, the film frequently appears on lists of the best films ever made - a true example of a film that was sentenced to cinematic obscurity but escaped and stole the hearts of its audience.     Legends Podcast #789: Miracle Mile (1988)

    This week, we're visiting L.A. for a 1988 film that takes place almost entirely in one night, in one neighborhood, along Wilshire Boulevard. When a jazz trombonist meets a diner waitress at a museum, sparks fly - up until he gets a phone call telling him the end is nigh! With nukes about to fall, he will risk it all to get the girl and get out alive! Starring Brat Pack-adjacent faces Anthony Edwards and Mare Winningham (who got hitched in real life in 2021!) along with a cast of cameos, this apocalyptic romance features a synth-drenched score by Tangerine Dream and on-location shooting for immersive effect. Written by Steve De Jarnatt just out of film school in 1978, the script went unproduced for a decade and was almost the basis for 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie. De Jarnatt ended up buying the rights back to direct it himself. The gamble didn't quite pay off - the late '80s Cold War thaw also chilled audience demand for nuclear thrillers - and the film ended up bombing at the box office. Still, it lives on as a cult classic, and Listener Chris selected it for us this week.     Legends Podcast #788: Murder By Death (1976)

    This week, we're wrapping up our great "Mash-Up" picks with a film that combines mystery and comedy by parodying some of the greatest mysteries of our time. Released in 1976 from a script by the great playwright Neil Simon, this "whodunnit?" stars a veritable "who's who?" of screen royalty, including Peter Sellers, David Niven, Maggie Smith, James Coco, Peter Falk, Eileen Brennan, Elsa Lanchester, Truman Capote, Nancy Walker, James Cromwell, and Alec Guinness. When a group of guests are invited to a remote country mansion, they are challenged to solve an impossible crime… and to the discerning viewer, the guests seem awfully familiar: they're send-ups of some of the greatest detectives ever to grace page and screen, including Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, and Sam Spade. But does literary pedigree plus clever casting equal comedy gold?     Legends Podcast #787: The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (1989)

    This week, we're eating out with a 1989 cult film from director, writer, and visual artist Peter Greenaway. The film centers on a cook, Richard, played by Richard Bohringer; a thief, mobster Albert, played by Michael Gambon; his wife, Georgina, played by Helen Mirren; and her lover, Michael, played by Alan Howard. Through a series of dinners at Richard's fancy London restaurant, Le Hollandais, which Albert owns, the lavish meals devolve into debauchery, while Georgina and Michael's affair evolves into a plot of lust, murder, and revenge. Filmed on massive, color-coded sets and featuring costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier and food by Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli, this crime-drama art film was released unrated by the MPAA for nudity and violence. Despite a limited run and current unavailability, the film has earned critical acclaim over the decades, as its indulgent brutality and formalist cinematography appear timeless.
