The Mourner’s Path: Walking Through Grief with Rabbi Anne Brener

In this moving conversation, Rabbi Evey Rothstein has a conversation with Rabbi Anne Brener—Los Angeles psychotherapist, spiritual director, and author of Mourning & Mitzvah: A Guided Journal for Walking the Mourner’s Path Through Grief to Healing. Together, they explore how to navigate the pain of loss, the power of the “ministry of presence,” and ancient Jewish wisdom for supporting one another through life’s most difficult moments. Drawing on Rabbi Brener’s decades of work with mourners, survivors, and communities in crisis—from Hurricane Katrina to the loss of loved ones—they discuss the sacredness of feeling our emotions fully, the importance of curiosity in the healing process, and the hope that emerges when we are held in compassionate community. You’ll also be guided through a gentle mindfulness meditation to help you reconnect with your body, breath, and inner resilience. Whether you are grieving, supporting someone in loss, or seeking tools for deeper compassion, this episode offers timeless wisdom, practical guidance, and a reminder that even in the depths of sorrow… healing is possible. Wrapped in Light: Becoming a Rabbi and Embracing My Soul's Purpose

In this episode of the Let Yourself Sparkle podcast, I open up about the incredible, messy, and deeply meaningful journey that’s brought me to where I am today. After years of resistance and fear, I’m finally sharing how I became a rabbi, my journey as a hospital chaplain intern, and someone who gets to connect with people soul-to-soul every single day. I’ll take you through the highs and lows—what it felt like to face rejection from rabbinical school, how I found another way to pursue my dream, and the transformative power of embracing fear and saying yes to life. I also talk about my work as a chaplain, from leading Shabbat services to offering blessings for new babies, sitting with patients during life’s hardest moments, and discovering the profound beauty of simply being present. This episode is all about rediscovering light—our inner light, divine light, and the sparks of connection that bring purpose and joy. If you’ve ever felt held back by fear, struggled to fully step into who you are, or wondered how to connect more deeply with yourself, your soul, or G-d, this episode is for you. When Souls Watch Over Us: A Jewish Reflection on Eternal Connections

In this deeply personal and soul-stirring episode, I read aloud my recent article published in the Jewish Journal — a reflection that begins with a quiet moment beside my Bubbie near the end of her life and expands into a spiritual journey across time, tradition, and mystery. As a granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, a rabbi, and a chaplain, I share what it was like to witness my Bubbie reaching out to someone I couldn’t see — her father, who perished in the Holocaust. That moment sparked questions I was once afraid to ask: What happens to the soul after death? Can we stay connected to those who’ve passed on? And… is that even a Jewish thing? Through teachings from the Zohar, the Talmud, Chassidic masters, and personal conversations with rabbis, scholars, and dying patients, I invite you into a sacred conversation about the eternal bonds of love and spirit — and the surprising ways Judaism makes space for connection beyond this world. This episode is for anyone who’s ever grieved, wondered, or longed for just one more moment with someone they’ve lost. It’s a reminder of the words of the Lubavitch Rebbe- shared by Zisi Cunin “It’s like they’re just on the second story, looking down at you — ain shtok hecher — one floor higher, but still with you.” Rabbi Gordon added that the Rebbe explained, “When someone passes away, they don’t go far — they’re just one floor up, watching over us, interceding, praying, and blessing.”  It’s a reminder of the tangible relationship we can still have with loved ones in spirit, and that sometimes, the most profound truths are whispered in the spaces between worlds.  If you found this information comforting, please share both the article “When Souls Watch Over Us: A Jewish Reflection on Eternal Connections” from the Jewish Journal, and the episode with somebody else who it might comfort. Thank you for tuning into the Let Yourself Sparkle podcast. Stay tuned for more episodes about how we can light up our body, mind, heart, and soul.
