Welcome to Episode 93 of Let’s Get Haunted. In the 1880s, brothers August and Herman Schuenemann decided to pursue their dreams of becoming ship captains and move together from their hometown in rural Wisconsin to the mean streets of Chicago. Through hard work and grit, they were both eventually able to sail as captains in the most dangerous kind of work available at the time: Christmas Tree Ships. What made this work so dangerous, was that they would be sailing the tumultuous waters of Lake Michigan from Chicago to northern Michigan’s evergreen forests to harvest trees to bring back to the city for Christmas. Very few ships were willing to make this journey as the ice, snow, and winter gales caused dangerous storms on the lake during this time of the year. Successfully completing these missions for many years, something would go terribly wrong in 1912, leading to many urban legends and ghost ship sightings that still exist today in the Great Lakes area of the U.S.

Episode 91: Paranormal Games to Play in the Dark, Part II

SKIP TO 15:30 TO GET TO THIS WEEK’S EPISODE

Have you ever wanted to speak to a spirit?

Episode 91 of Let's Get Haunted teaches you how to do just that! This week, Aly dives into even more paranormal games as a continuation of Episode 80, in "Paranormal Games, Part 2".

For this Supernatural Ritual Round-Up, Aly & Nat discuss two games from Latin America: El Juego Del Libro Rojo (The Red Book Game) and El Juego De La Copa (The Cup Game) and even talk to a long-time listener of the show, Michelle, who has played the Red Book Game before! Both of these games are officially banned by the Catholic Church and after hearing about so many different people’s experiences, it’s easy to see why.

Are you brave enough to play these games?

Welcome to Episode 90.5: Listener Stories #10! This week, Aly and Nat remote record via Zoom (sorry about the audio quality of Nat’s mic!) and read your creepy real-life stories that you’ve e-mailed us. For some reason (maybe because we were both home alone while reading these) we both continually freak out and scream throughout the episode. Included this week are: two incidents of a witch voice speaking Latin resurfacing 10 years apart, a man who fed babies to pigs before blowing himself up with dynamite, children’s clothing found under the floorboards, and a translucent man in a fedora stepping out of an armchair. Enjoy!

Episode 90: Haunted Alcatraz Prison Island

Episode 90: Haunted Alcatraz Prison Island

Just 1.25 miles off the shore of San Francisco, an abandoned prison island with a macabre history of human suffering calls out to curious onlookers. Even before the famous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was built in 1933, the island served as a military prison for unfortunate souls. Deep underneath the solitary confinement cells in "D-Block", there are dungeons decorated with the carvings of inmates gone mad one hundred years ago. Just how haunted is "The Rock"? Listen and find out!

Episode 89: Japanese Folklore Feat. Reina Scully

Episode 89: Japanese Folklore Feat. Reina Scully

Welcome to Episode 89! For our third episode of Spooky Szn 2021, we decided to have on our good friend Reina Scully to school us in the spookiest of Japanese Folklore! This week, we discuss "Kokkuri San", "Hitobashira", "Teke Teke", "Tomino's Hell", and "Kuchisake Onna" in a very special episode of Japanese-themed hauntings.

Kokkuri: Kokkuri, or Kokkuri-san, refers to a paranormal game of divination, similar to the American Ouija Board. The word kokkuri refers to the game, the actual physical apparatus, and kokkuri-san refers to the being that is summoned that is considered by the Japanese to be some sort of animal spirit that is a mix between a fox, dog, and raccoon. The game is played by writing characters on a piece of paper (much like a Ouija Board) and moving a coin around the board instead of a planchette.

Hitobashira: Hitobashira refers to a cultural practice of human sacrifice used formerly in Japan, in addition to many other eastern and southeastern countries found in Asia, wherein humans were buried alive near large-scale construction projects (such as castles, bridges, and dams) as an offering to the gods to keep the structure safe from harm.

Teke Teke: Teke Teke is a Japanese urban legend about the ghost of a schoolgirl whose body was cut in half when she was run over by a train in a mysterious accident. Due to the unfortunate circumstances of her demise, her ghost is doomed to roam urban areas using only her hands and elbows since her lower half no longer exists. The dragging of her torso across the ground makes a “teke teke” noise similar to a skittering or scratching noise. She carries around a large scythe that she uses to chop unsuspecting passers-by in half.

Tomino’s Hell: Written by Japanese poet Saijo Yaso at the end of WWI, “Tomino's Hell” is a dark and unsettling poem believed to curse, or even kill, anyone who reads it out loud.

Kuchisake Onna: Kuchisake-onna, meaning “Slit-Mouthed Woman”, is a popular urban legend about a malicious spirit who wears a mask to cover her mouth. She stops strangers in the night and asks “Do you think I’m beautiful?” Regardless of the answer (except in rare circumstances), she will tear off her mask, revealing her mutilated mouth, before killing the stranger.

Haphazard, but make it chic.

I have listen to every episode since I found these ladies their 3rd episode. Been loyal ever since.

Although, I tend to prefer Aly’s episodes. Her story telling and research really tickles my hyper-fixation gland. She really goes into depth with her topics, truly she is willing to get haunted it seems, and they stick to being spooky or otherworldly. If you looking for an informative, while still being fun and comedic, Aly’s stories are the ones to listen too! She was honestly made for podcasting. If she did a podcast about HR, I would 100% listen.

But don’t get me wrong, Nat has some good topics and research. She’s an okay host, always has good energy and keeps up with banter when needed. I just can’t get into her stories or her telling of them. They are fun and more theatrical, but I kinda wish they were more put together? Maybe taken more seriously? Actually be spooky? It’s hard to put a finger on what she’s missing. It’s not like she isn’t entertaining, just not what I am personally looking for to give me a story. Trust me, once in a blue her topics are interesting along with her research. So this is entirely my opinion. I’d trust her with my possum, if I had one.

I’m obviously biased. I come from listening to podcasts like LPOTL, Lore, Serial, and for a time MFM. These pods are all detail oriented with a healthy amount of what makes them special; whether it be comedy, the voice of the host, or whatever tickles your fancy. Aly’s narrative is what /I/ personally prefer and she follows much of what I like about those other pods.

I hope they eventually get a patreon or something like that. Maybe an assistant, lol, but an assistant who keeps the discombobulated vibes. It would be fun to look into the source materials for bonus or bonus story/guests.

Bring back the ants and nail reveal! 😩 Also give Nat a dang treasure already! Vlog it.
