    Sermon: On Scandal

Sermon for the Second Sunday After Easter: "On Scandal", by St. Alphonsus de Liguori. “The wolf catcheth and scattereth the sheep.” (Jn. 10:12) In this powerful sermon, Saint Alphonsus de Liguori addresses one of the most destructive sins in the Christian life: scandal — giving occasion to the spiritual ruin of others through bad example, words, or actions. The saint explains with clarity and fire why scandal is so gravely displeasing to God. Every soul is infinitely precious to the Lord — created in His image, redeemed by the Blood of Christ, and destined for eternal glory. To destroy even one soul through scandal is to rob God of a child, to murder a soul for which Jesus suffered and died, and to wound Christ Himself. St. Alphonsus then describes the terrifying punishment reserved for those who give scandal: it would be better for them to have a millstone hung around their neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea. He shows how scandalous Christians act as ministers of the devil, doing more damage than many demons, and how God will demand an account for every soul lost through their fault. This sermon is a serious wake-up call for anyone whose words, actions, or example may be leading others into sin — whether through immodesty, bad language, ridicule of virtue, neglect in correcting children, or any form of bad example. It also warns the faithful to avoid the company of those who give scandal, even if they are close friends or benefactors. A strong, pastoral, and timeless message for every Christian who desires to protect both their own soul and the souls of others. Sermon: On the miserable state of relapsing sinners

Sermon for Easter Sunday: "On the Miserable State of Relapsing Sinners" by Saint Alphonsus de Liguori. “He is risen; He is not here.” (Mark 16:6) As we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ this Easter, Saint Alphonsus de Liguori delivers a powerful and urgent sermon for those who have just risen from sin through confession. Many begin well, but few persevere. In this sobering meditation, the great Doctor of the Church warns of the terrible danger and misery of relapsing into the same sins after making a good confession. He explains why a relapse is far worse than the original fall: it weakens the soul, gives the devil greater power, and makes recovery increasingly difficult. With striking examples and scriptural wisdom, St. Alphonsus shows how God is deeply displeased by the ingratitude of those who return to sin after receiving His mercy. He reminds us that the crown of Paradise is not promised to those who merely begin, but only to those who persevere to the end. Yet this is not a message of despair. The saint offers clear, practical means to avoid relapse: daily prayer, meditation, frequent Communion, spiritual reading, devotion to Mary, and above all, humble and constant begging for the grace of perseverance. Meditation: Mary Present on Calvary at the Death of Jesus

In this moving reflection, Saint Alphonsus de Liguori contemplates the Queen of Martyrs — the Blessed Virgin Mary — as she stands faithfully at the foot of the Cross, witnessing the agonizing death of her innocent Son. Unlike other mothers who flee from the sight of their suffering children, Mary does not abandon Jesus. She draws near. She remains close. She watches as her beloved Son — her God, her only love, the most beautiful and holy of all sons — hangs dying on the gibbet of infamy, torn by scourges and thorns, suspended by three iron nails. This is her martyrdom: a sorrow more cruel than any other, as she is powerless to relieve His pain or hold Him in her arms one last time. Yet she stands firm, united with her Son in His sacrifice. St. Alphonsus invites us to stand with Mary at Calvary, to compassionate her sorrowful heart, and to beg for the grace of true contrition for our sins and a deeper love for Jesus, who died for us. A powerful meditation on the co-suffering of the Mother of God that will stir your soul to sorrow, gratitude, and total devotion to Christ and His Sorrowful Mother. Perfect for Lent, Holy Week, or any time you wish to enter more deeply into the Passion of Jesus through the eyes of Mary. Meditation: Jesus on the Cross

What an awe-inspiring and heart-piercing sight: the King of Heaven crucified, covered in wounds, dying in unimaginable agony for the sins of humanity. In this reflection, Saint Alphonsus de Liguori invites us to contemplate the Passion of Christ with fresh eyes. Why does the innocent God suffer such torments? To expiate our sins. The Lord for His slaves. The Shepherd dying for His sheep. The Creator offered as a holocaust for His creatures. With deep tenderness and holy sorrow, St. Alphonsus leads us to the foot of the Cross, where Jesus endures not only physical torment but the crushing weight of every sin—including ours. He saw you and me in His final agony… and still chose to die for us. This moving meditation stirs the soul to repentance, gratitude, and burning love for the Crucified Savior. It will draw your heart closer to Jesus, awaken sorrow for sin, and inspire you to live entirely for Him. Perfect for prayer, Lent, Holy Week, or any time you need to remember the depth of God’s love. Meditation: The Ignominies which Jesus Christ suffered in His Passion

In this episode, you'll listen to the meditation "The Ignominies which Jesus Christ suffered in His Passion", taken from "The Passion and the Death of Jesus Christ" by Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori. St. Alphonsus invites us to contemplate the profound humiliations and ignominies our Lord Jesus Christ endured during His Passion. From being abandoned by His disciples, betrayed by one and denied by another, to being mocked as a fool by Herod, scourged as a slave, crowned with thorns, and treated as a mock king—Jesus was rejected, spat upon, and ultimately crucified between two criminals as the most despised of men. Through vivid reflections drawn from Sacred Scripture and the saints, this meditation reveals the depth of Christ’s love: He who is exalted above all chose to become the most contemptible of all for our sake. St. Alphonsus concludes with a tender prayer of love, sorrow, and resolve to respond to such immense love with our whole heart.
