Episode 55: Overcoming rejection and insecurities

Episode 55: Overcoming rejection and insecurities

“I’m really convinced that if we allow ourselves to get in over our heads, that’s when we’ll see more and more of God’s power moving in and through us.”
Jessica Collins was called by God into full time ministry at a young age but had to overcome her own doubts as well as some of the rejection she has experienced as a woman in ministry. Her experience has taught her that if you take risks and step out in faith God proves to be faithful.
Jessica found Jesus through reading a Gideon’s Bible given to her as a child in school in Toronto. At age 10 Jessica prophesied to her divorcing parents the restoration of marriage which came to pass exactly at the time she had predicted.
From there, Jessica grew in her knowledge of, and love for, Jesus and committed herself to a life of ministry as a female pastor, though, she’s faced numerous setbacks and opposition. She’ll share what it’s been like to stay faithful to her calling even when people close to her did not understand or accept her.

As part of our “Changed Lives Change Lives” theme, Jessica shares how she mentors other women and helps bring out the full potential of spiritual giftings. Enjoy the episode!
3:19 – Jessica’s background and parents’ failed marriage led her to a crisis and to the Bible
6:40 – Jessica has a vision and receives a word from God about her parents reconciling and it came true four months later
9:42 – How the rest of Jessica’s family became born-again Christians and were set free from their addictions
12:15 – At age 13, Jessica finds peace after initially being unsure if she’d be able to follow her calling to serve the Lord and be married with kids
14:05 – Jessica’s unique path to getting involved with full-time ministry
16:53 – The struggles of being a female pastor/leader and facing opposition at two different churches
23:03 – What Jessica learned from God and how her relationship with Jesus grew during the challenging times
25:31 – Jessica mentors a quiet, reserved member of her church and helped her unlock and unleash her spiritual gifts for prophecy
30:37 – Jessica’s encouragement for people who are afraid of doing ministry or unsure of what God is calling them to do

Episode 54: Transformation of an ex-Communist and an addict

Episode 54: Transformation of an ex-Communist and an addict

This episode’s guest is from Novi Sad, Serbia. Bera Beredji grew up in former Yugoslavia in a family that strongly believed in the Communist ideology. His father even worked for the Communist party at one point. But when civil war broke out in the 1980s, Bera stopped believing in Communism and turned to anarchism, punk music and the use of alcohol and drugs for meaning in his life.
But the punk movement didn’t provide any lasting comfort for Bera. His young adult years were full of constant pain. However, that all changed when a friend invited him to church during Christmastime. Bera was touched by the music, the people, and the pastor’s story about waking up every day with a smile on his face.
Bera wanted to have that kind of peace in his life. The next time he was in the punk club, craving alcohol, he prayed to God – and in that moment God set him free from his addiction. Bera would go on to introduce others to Christ, get involved at church, and work his way up to becoming a pastor. Today, he’s the pastor of the largest evangelical Church in Serbia and he also does homeless outreach and drug rehab work.
Bera Beredji is truly an example of how “Changed Lives Change Lives.” He has great wisdom to share about what it means to say “Yes” to God and be obedient in our service to Him.
2:30 – Bera’s childhood in Serbia and his father’s involvement with the Communist ideology
6:08 – How Bera became disillusioned with Communism and turned to punk music for his identity
9:13 – Bera serves in the army and becomes a heavy alcohol and drug user
10:32 – How Bera discovered Christianity and was set free from his addictions
15:45 – Bera’s life changes, he begins serving in the church, and does well in his higher education
20:34 – Info about the rehab center in Serbia that Bera helped start
22:23 – Bera’s passion for ministering to young people, homeless people, and those far from God
26:08 – Bera’s advice for finding your calling and how you can say “Yes” to whatever God is asking you to do

Episode 53: She chose Jesus over gay lifestyle and the Mormon Church

Episode 53: She chose Jesus over gay lifestyle and the Mormon Church

The sudden loss of a parent at a young age. A bad relationship with family members. Anger at God. Same-sex attraction. Involvement in a false religious group.
Even just one of those five things could cause serious emotional and spiritual consequences in someone’s life. So just imagine what Mary Hilding, the guest on this episode, has gone through… because she’s experienced all of them.
Hers is a story of how God protected her throughout all the painful things in her past. Today, Mary is living out of a newfound faith and freedom in Christ. Her testimony has many twists and turns, but the common thread is that Jesus is with us through all the dark moments, doubts, and disappointments in our lives.
2:59 – An overview of Mary’s family, childhood, father’s death, anger at her mom, and rebellion
6:22 – Mary didn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus as a kid and became angry with God after her dad died
8:45 – After high school, Mary spent several years at YWAM but then went to college, started playing rugby, and living a lesbian lifestyle
10:38 – Mary feels an “inner turmoil” about her sexuality and decides to attempt suicide. When it failed, she decided to come out to her mom and that led to a years-long search for her true identity
17:18 – A counselor helps Mary understand that the loss of her dad may have contributed to her same-sex attraction. Before that, though, Mary got “married” to a woman and was devastated when none of her family showed up
20:45 – Mary gets introduced to the Mormon church
22:37 – Mary breaks up with her partner, “jumps headfirst into Mormonism,” but then learns some concerning things that made her question her new religion
25:46 – The turning point where Mary accepted God’s grace & love and begins a true relationship with Jesus
28:55 – Mary’s advice to people who have friends or family members walking the same path she did
30:05 – “God is so big. He loves you. And He wants what is best.”

Episode 52: Rescued from a ghetto to be a voice for Christ

Episode 52: Rescued from a ghetto to be a voice for Christ

On this new episode of the “Changed Lives Change Lives” series, guest Lou Perez shares his incredible testimony.
Growing up in the streets in a rough area of New York City without much supervision from his father and a mentally ill mom, Lou could have joined a gang or sought relief in drugs. He covered up his pain by being tough and rebellious but deep in his heart there had always been a longing for God.
After picking up a Bible once he stumbled upon a passage of Scripture that scared him into going to church.
Fast forward to 2021, and Lou Perez is a pastor of Destiny Church in Niagara Falls, NY, a host of the Soul2O podcast https://soul02.com/ and a Bible teacher who’s been used by God to change many peoples’ lives – on the mission field, in his church, and in his personal relationships.
In the interview Lou also shares how his transformation helped a “druggie” friend to become a pastor of a megachurch and how on a mission trip to China he was able to lighten the heart of a handicapped fatherless boy. We hope his story will inspire you.
Also, be sure to check out Lou’s podcast here: https://soul02.com/
2:40 – Info about Lou’s podcast and the goal behind it
4:00 – Rough childhood in the Bronx
6:42 – Lou’s difficult family situation and how it affected him
8:00 – How Lou came to know Jesus and how his life began to change
12:20 – Lou’s journey of becoming an evangelist and pastor
17:20 – Stories of people who Lou was able to have an impact on
19:35 – “Being salt and light” is more than words… it’s being who you are in Christ
20:27 – A group of non-Christian restaurant workers in China was won to Christ by an unintended witness
22:51 – Why God called Lou to go on a self-sponsored trip to China instead of a free trip to Israel

Episode 51: God fulfills forgotten dreams

Episode 51: God fulfills forgotten dreams

The process of having your life changed by Jesus can be instantaneous. But it can also take a little while, too. For many Christians, it’s a mixture of both. And that’s true for today’s guest, Katie Hagstrom.
After her parents got divorced when Katie was about 9 years old, she and her siblings were led to begin a personal relationship with Jesus through a conversation with her dad. That experience gave Katie peace during the trauma of her parents’ divorce.
But a few years later, Katie realized that deep inside she was unhappy, mean, and unloving towards others – not exactly a Christlike attitude for a young Christian woman to have. So, the Lord began the gentle process of helping Katie understand that she could love others because He loved her so much.
Another hurdle for Katie’s faith journey was the fact that she didn’t get to go on a mission trip in high school. She longed to go share the Gospel with people in other cultures, but finances never allowed for it to happen. Years later, in her twenties, Katie tried again to go on a mission trip… and discovered God knew her desire and loved her enough to make it happen.
Katie’s going to share more about all of this on this episode. This is the second installment of our new series, “Changed Lives Change Lives.”
6:35 – The rocky years of going through her parents’ divorce
8:50 – Katie begins her relationship with Jesus
11:15 – Katie is criticized for her sarcastic nature and begins to realize that she didn’t love others or know for sure that God loved her
14:48 – The process of being changed by the fact that God knows and loves His children
17:38 – The backstory of Katie’s interest in missions work
19:30 - Why Katie was never able to go on a mission trip as a young woman
20:11 – The story of Katie getting to finally go on a mission trip and why it reminded her of how much Jesus knows and loves us
25:20 – The hard but good mission trip to Scotland and how Katie got to encourage and influence some young women there
28:07 – God knows our deepest desires and blesses us so that we can be a blessing to others
