Coming up in this episode LP Cam RAM is here Closing the open source Get your stars aligned 0:00 Cold Open 1:32 LPCAMM2 Might Change the Game 26:48 Malus in Wonderland 41:22 Reaching for the Stars 1:19:39 Next Time 1:23:26 Stinger The Video Version https://youtu.be/Lq4-jkS9id4 Today in User Space we get excited for the future of Low Profile memory with LPCAMM2 showing up lately in the Framework 13 Pro's Intel boards giving speed and power savings we've never seen before. On paper, it's as good as the Mac unified memory, but will it actually live up to the hype on the new Intel chips? Then, we find out Malus is out here copying open source software and adjusting it enough that it becomes... liberated? Described as 'satire,' this tool, at least on its surface, does seem to do exactly what it says on the tin. But why? And finally, we spend a lot of time talking about Ubuntu 26.04's release, and it turns out, some of the highlights are really interesting. Password feedback lets us meander into a much longer security debate about shoulder surfing, why TPM's and encryption are good, actually, the Gnome Resources app, which is surprisingly good, but we forgot to remember about it, and then we try to figure out when the right time to update really is. 📣Announcements📣 This program was made possible by: 📺️Youtube 📽️TILvids And by contributions to your L-U-S station by Patrons like you 😍 Go to our Links 🔗 Page for more places to find us LPCAMM2 Memory is gaining traction LPCAMM2 memory Nextgen Framework Framework 13 configurator More of this will help the RAM situation 📣More Announcements📣 Want to have a topic covered or have some feedback? - send us an email, contact@linuxuserspace.show OR jump on over to the open forum on Lemmy Go to our Links 🔗 Page for more places to find us Open Source can be magicked into Closed Source without Violating Copyright (Left) Malus archive.today link to 404 Media article But shouldn't it be Public Domain? 🧹Housekeeping🧹 Catch these and other great topics as they unfold on our Subreddit or our News channel on Discord. Luckily the very first Pentium (with MMX!) is still in-tree, but for how much longer? We also find out that Ubuntu is raising their minimum RAM requirement to 6GB from 4. Honestly, it's about time. Then, some bittersweet news. Leo finally gets to play around with the Firefox built-in VPN, but Dan still hasn't seen it. What we found out, though, is that Firefox will happily leak your real IP address with WebRTC. Does this defeat the purpose?! Lastly, we try to guess what's going to happen next with RAM prices. They seem to have hit their peak, but will they really come tumbling down? At least for Raspberry Pi, that's not the case as price rises across the entire line are happening. The Pi 5 16GB is a jaw dropping $300! We also respond to a couple of comments. This time, it's in systemd. Lots of folks have been activated about this one since it hits much closer to home, even in distros that weren't considering it prior, and why we think it's not a big deal, nor is that slope very slippery from here Then, we find out that Mozilla has a browser, and they're putting a couple of interesting things in there! Namely split view and a VPN, but only the cool kids have the latter for now. Next up is, in the US, the FCC has banned foreign consumer grade routers, which is basically all of them. What do a couple of Linux nerds suggest to try instead? LINUX OF COURSE! We also spend more time in Kagiland and learn a couple of things. Finally! A good episode! Coming up in this episode I am speed! Take a peek, preferably after they update their expired certificate (they seriously did this to us after we speak so highly!) and get a slightly more honest look at your speeds! For bonus points, try a different country. We also dig into some of the technical bits behind those tests. Also, when speaking about jitter, I should have said 'delta' or 'difference' rather than 'average'! Then, more age verification. This time, though, Linux distributions are caught in the crossfire and some are exploring the ways to actually handle potential implementations. Nothing's too dire yet as most of these 'laws' are still bills, and that means they don't matter quite yet. Also, we look into a post by Gabriele Svelto, a Firefox developer, to find out that not only is Firefox a little more reliable than you might think, bad RAM or other hardware bits might actually be the reason things are crashing, and not just Firefox! Finally, some feedback, and we learn that our Mac User / Listener Venn diagram isn't just two separate circles. 📣Announcements📣 This program was made possible by: 📺️Youtube 📽️TILvids And by contributions to your L-U-S station by Patrons like you 😍 Check Your Speed 🏁 librespeed 📣More Announcements📣 Want to have a topic covered or have some feedback? - send us an email, contact@linuxuserspace.show OR jump on over to the open forum on Lemmy Age Verification in Linux (and BSD) Proposed Colorado Legislation Proposed California Legislation System76 response Midnight BSD response FreeDesktop Merge Proposal punted to a portal implementation 🧹Housekeeping🧹 Catch these and other great topics as they unfold on our Subreddit or our News channel on Discord. 🗞️ Linux User Space Lemmy 📰 Linux User Space subreddit ⌨️ Linux User Space Discord Server 📲 Linux User Space Telegram ✉️ Linux User Space Matrix 📽️ Linux User Space Twitch 🐘 Linux User Space Mastodon 📜 Linux User Space Twitter 📺️ Linux User Space TILVids 📱 Linux User Space Bluesky Memories Lost Firefox crash reports detect bit flips Feedback @vimlena from YouTube Waterfox works with Firefox sync @squidiebah from YouTube Been using firefox for years, this won't make me move and I've just disabled it(AI). And it'd be going a lot better if Leo could stop weighing the pros and cons of each search and their impact on the quota. Also, a little about Orion and why its tabbed layout is much better than the rest. Then, F-Droid is back in the news with a new lament about the dwindling amount of time left before the September Sideload cutoff. Time to make a little more noise, it seems. And finally, Firefox gets the long awaited Kill Switch, but was it actually backtracking? We make the case for why that might not have actually been the case, but welcome the toggle either way. Oh, and in Next Time, we accidentally slip in a small segment about Discord and what backtracking actually looks like! Episode 6:06: The Epic Epoch

In this episode we spend a lot of time hyping things up, including some things you might not expect (from a Linux show, not so much Leo). We open up with Zorin making some money moves that helps WinBoat among a few other projects, then really dive into the show with Cosmic! A bit about how we've fared now that the 1.0 Cosmic Epoch is here, how things have changed, and what other goodies System76 has up their sleeve (it's a lot!). Then, we spend some time dissecting Mozilla's newest AI move. It turns out, if you dig deep enough, there's still hope, contrary to the wildly hot-take style news about things so far. And our final topic, Snapscope, a way to scan your Snaps for vulnerabilities, but then end up chatting way more about Snaps in general. There's also a bit of SteamThing errata we need to cover before ending it all on a high note for the holidays. Hope you enjoy and we'll see you soon. Happy holidays!
