Podcast Episode 004: Discrimination Against Women

Women make up a little more than half the population, but account for less than a quarter of on-course golfers. Golf’s history of exclusion is to blame, and it manifests itself in ways that are obvious and subtle.

Episode 4 of the Lying Four podcast examines golf’s culture of discrimination against women from four different perspectives: Karen Crouse of The New York Times, architect and former ASGCA president Jan Bel Jan, the women of Grueter Golf, and Craig Annis of the USGA.

What a fantastic start!

Laying 4’s long form content and initial podcasts possess a true passion for trafficking in human possibilities, rather than in settled certainties.

Our world seems rightly obsessed with producing analytic and data driven information to move our commerce engines forward, but failing daily and miserably at getting to the minutiae necessary to make up one’s mind about truth or wisdom.

So it’s refreshing when a newer voice comes along that clearly realizes that when done well the product of storytelling is wisdom.

While scientific and philosophical worldview has largely been concerned with the question of how to know truth, storytellers are often much more concerned with the question of how to endow experience with meaning — a dichotomy Hannah Arendt addressed brilliantly.

Laying 4’s imaginative application in its writing and narrative leads to good stories, a gripping framing of the drama from the circumstances it relates, which gives the listener or reader a window into both a comprehensible and believable historical accounting. It deals in human intention and action and the vicissitudes and consequences that mark their course.

Please keep these stories coming, Will, along with the occasional moments of wisdom.
