Macklin's Take #127 with Mike Altamura

Macklin's Take #127 with Mike Altamura

This week on Macklin's Take me and Matt are joined by Mike Altamura.

Mike is a genuine boxing insider; a matchmaker, agent and fixer, he's been involved in the sport at pretty much every level from organising local shows in his home country of Australia, to scouting for Top Rank at Olympic Games, to managing fighters to world titles.

Mike's got one of those great, "only in boxing" kind of stories and it was tremendous fun hearing it.

Macklin's Take is now also on YouTube so if you could find your way over there and click subscribe, that would be great.

Macklin's Take #126 with Chris McKenna

Macklin's Take #126 with Chris McKenna

This week me & Matt catch up with Daily Star boxing writer Chris McKenna.

A few weeks ago it was Chris who broke the news that AJ vs Fury wouldn't be happening because Tyson would have to first give Deontay Wilder a third fight.

It was a huge story, the biggest of Chris' career to date so we were keen to know how it came about and just what it's like working on the boxing beat for a daily newspaper in the current climate; a job where you have to combine the old school values of the printed daily edition with the more modern approach demanded by the instant digital platform.

The conversation went in all sorts of directions and we finished off with a good chat about the Matchroom/DAZN news, which had been confirmed the day we recorded this with Chris.

Macklin's Take #125 with Tris Dixon

Macklin's Take #125 with Tris Dixon

This week on Macklin's Take me & Matt are joined by our good friend Tris Dixon.

A former editor of Boxing News, Tris has long been one of the most respected figures in British boxing journalism.

And he has a new book out.

It's called Damage; The Untold Story of Brain Trauma in Boxing. It's a must read for everyone who really cares about the sport, absolutely everyone. It's the kind of book that could bring about real change and it was fascinating to talk to Tris about how he came to write it.

And we also took him back to his early days as a journalist, including his treks to all corners of the USA in search of old champions. It was great fun.

Macklin's Take #124 with Carl Frampton

Macklin's Take #124 with Carl Frampton

This week me & Matt Macklin welcome back to the podcast a newly retired Carl Frampton.

The 2-weight world champion talks about hanging the gloves up, Belfast roots, childhood ambitions and we give him a few ideas for what he might want to do next, apart from boxing punditry of course.

It's been over a year since we last spoke to Carl so it was great to get him back on; we hope to catch him ringside soon.

Macklin's Take #123 with IBF Flyweight champion of the world Sunny Edwards

Macklin's Take #123 with IBF Flyweight champion of the world Sunny Edwards

Back in March we had a long and very enjoyable chat with a 15-0 Sunny Edwards about the trials and tribulations of a boxing life and how he'd managed to drive his career to the brink of a world title shot.

A couple of months later he's now 16-0 and the new IBF Flyweight champion of the world after dethroning Moruti Mthalane, a man who hadn't lost since 2008, in immaculate style.

That ladies and gentlemen is the power of Macklin's Take :)

But seriously, we had to get Sunny back on the pod to hear all about that night and how life has been for him since realising his lifelong dream.

Macklin's Take #122 with Carl Greaves

Macklin's Take #122 with Carl Greaves

This week me & Matt welcome Carl Greaves to the podcast.

Carl's our favourite type of guest, a true insider of the sport, a genuine boxing lifer!

He was a pro fighter and is now a trainer, manager, promoter and matchmaker. He's done it all; from taking fighters on the road to guiding David Avanesyan to a world title.

It was great fun chatting to him about the ups and downs of the fight game.

Outstanding podcast

February- just gets better!

November - Glen McCrory was awesome. My hobby is climbing mountains, I didn’t know Glen was also into this. I remember Glen from the 1990s. I used to be a Lennox Lewis groupie. I remember Glen was commentating and boxing at the same time. He was/ is classy inside and outside the ring. I was saw his box at the Riviera in Las Vegas against Mark Young and the next day he was helping to host the Lewis V Tucker press conference. A classy guy Glen. I’m glad he’s still taking on challenges.

October - today was an awesome interview. Ryan Rhodes perfectly captured the 1990s fight scene in the late 1990s. I live in America now but was in northern England during the 1990s. I used to go to as many boxing shows as possible, Hamed, Watson, EUBANK, Benn, Milton, Laing, etc, etc, etc. It was good to relive those times. Plus the language used was g-rated so kids can listen in and get a feel of the times.

October - this podcast just goes from strength to strength. The past few weeks have been amazing. The interview with Mark Reigate was so informative on the London amateur scene. I also loved the Mark Seltzer interview was incredible. Both men were candid and highly interesting. Like I’ve said the success key here is the lack of shouting and chest beating. This show is a boxers podcast.

August- great interview with Michael Buffer. Nice and relaxed. I just turned off two other boxing podcast as the interviewers were screaming and hyping things, it’s too much. At least this show you cut through the hype. Well done lads.

July 2019 - This podcast is amazing, it’s like being sat in a quiet coffee shop late at night chatting over a great night of boxing. I remember going to a fight in the UK in the mid1990s, the fight was over, myself, Harold Lederman, Gill Clancy, Larry Merchant and my father sat drinking coffee talking boxing. Probably one of the best nights of my life. Theses shows remind me of that night, there’s no hype, no shouting, no talking over each other, no silly music; just knowledgeable men talking and respecting the noble art. Thanks gentlemen you have no idea how much I like the show. A+

July 2019 - this podcast just gets better and better every week!

Two very very knowledgeable people discuss boxing, it’s fantastic. I wish they’d change their logo, but I’m being fussy.
