In 2014, Vyla moved to Berlin to pursue her career in musical theatre. After a couple of detours and battling the gremlins of self doubt, she found her way back to the stage with a little help from her friends: a group of fellow music performers whom she met in a surprising place. Have the guts.

I am a music journalist and singer, and I’ve spent my career obsessed with rock and roll: how it’s made and how we can channel its electric, transformative power. In this premiere, I dive into the concept of "Main Act Energy", that feeling of empowerment that allows us to break free from societal expectations to be tame or obedient. From the visceral impact of a Led Zeppelin guitar solo to the psychological shift required to stop playing a role, I explore how the spirit of rock can lead to your ultimate personal freedom. In This Episode, I discuss: * Defining Main Act Energy: I share how I identify that infectious energy found in legendary live performances and iconic bands like Van Halen, and how I use it to transport myself into a world of freedom. * The Honesty of Rock vs. The Polished World of Pop: I believe rock is the most honest genre because it acknowledges our "demons": anger, disappointments and yearning, rather than the predictable, marketable perfection often found on social media and in pop music * Escaping the "box": I share about the pressure I felt to conform to the "good girl" box and why I’ve decided to stop performing a version of myself just to fit in * The Beauty of Mystery and Irritation: I discuss why reclaiming your voice may cause irritation and rejection in others, and why I’ve embraced being a mystery as a position of power. * Reclaiming "Goodness": I reflect on a Mary Oliver poem that reminded me that being "good" isn't about submissiveness or constant repentance, but about being free.
