41| God Doesn't Need Your Advice — So What Is Ministry?

Most of us hear “minister” and think “give counsel, give guidance, help people make decisions.” So what does it even mean to minister to God? Does God need our advice or spiritual counseling? If not, why does Scripture say, “they ministered to the Lord”? In this episode of Maintaining Fire, Desmond Flores walks through the Bible’s own language for ministry and shows why ministry to God must come before ministry for people. We look at: Old Testament “ministering to the Lord” Deuteronomy 10:8–9 (NIV) – the Levites carry the ark, stand before the Lord to minister, and bless in His name. 1 Samuel 2:11 (NIV) – Samuel “ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest.” New Testament “ministering to the Lord” Acts 13:1–2 (ESV) – prophets and teachers in Antioch were worshiping / ministering to the Lord and fasting when the Holy Spirit spoke. Word studies that change how we see ministry Hebrew שָׁרַת – sharath (H8334): to minister, serve, attend, wait on – the language of attendants before a superior. Hebrew עֲבֹדָה – avodah (from avad): can mean work, serve, and worship – the same word used for everyday labor and service to God. Greek διάκονος – diakonos (G1249): servant, attendant, minister – the root behind our word “minister.” Greek λειτουργέω – leitourgeō (G3008): to perform public or priestly service – used in Acts 13:2 for “ministering to the Lord.” Romans 12:1 (NIV) – why your body and everyday life are your “living sacrifice… true and proper worship.” You’ll see why: You can be busy in ministry and still rarely minister to God Himself. Your Monday‑to‑Friday job can be worship when it’s done as “avodah” – work, service, and worship united. True ministry starts with standing before the Lord, not just working for Him or counseling others. If you’ve ever wondered, “What does it really mean to minister to the Lord?” or “How can my normal job be ministry to God?”, this episode is for you. Timestamps (suggested) 00:00 – Hook: Why would God need us to minister to Him? 02:00 – What we usually mean by “minister” 07:00 – Old Testament: Levites and Samuel “ministering before the Lord” 14:00 – New Testament: Acts 13 and leitourgeō 20:00 – Avodah: work, worship, and serving God in your job 28:00 – Ministry to God vs. ministry for people 35:00 – Why ministry to God must come first 45:00 – Prayer and response Scriptures Used Deuteronomy 10:8–9 (NIV) Deuteronomy 10:12–14 (NIV) – serving God with all your heart and soul 1 Samuel 2:11 (NIV) Acts 13:1–2 (ESV) Romans 12:1–2 (NIV) Key Word Studies שָׁרַת – sharath (H8334) – to minister, serve, attend, wait on עֲבֹדָה – avodah – work, service, worship διάκονος – diakonos (G1249) – servant, attendant, minister λειτουργέω – leitourgeō (G3008) – to perform priestly/public service, to minister SEO / Search Keywords ministering to God, ministry to God, what does minister mean in the Bible, biblical meaning of ministry, ministering to the Lord Acts 13, sharath H8334, avodah work worship serve, diakonos meaning, leitourgeo meaning, work as worship, Romans 12:1 living sacrifice, Old Testament Levites ministry, Samuel ministered before the Lord, Christian podcast Maintaining Fire, Desmond Flores sermon, ministry burnout, busy in ministry but far from God You can tweak the title line at the top to match whichever title you choose (e.g., “‘Minister’ Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Means”).

40| Why You Still Hurt After You Forgive.

Why You Still Hurt After You Forgive | Maintaining Fire with Desmond Flores Forgiveness was the first step — not the last. The Lamb was slain. The blood was applied. The debt was paid. But the leaven is still in the cracks. Let’s search by candlelight. Have you ever forgiven someone… and still felt the pain? You did the right thing. You let it go. You chose grace. But the hurt is still there in the cracks. In this episode, host Desmond Flores opens up the ancient Jewish practice of bedikat chametz — the candlelight search for hidden leaven before Passover — and shows how it mirrors what God still wants to do in your heart long after you’ve said “I forgive.” In this episode we unpack: Why a little leaven leavens the whole lump — Galatians 5:9 (ESV) “Cleanse out the old leaven” — 1 Corinthians 5:7–8 (ESV) The searchlight prayer — Psalm 139:23–24 (ESV) The “root of bitterness” warning — Hebrews 12:15 (ESV) Mercy asymmetry — Exodus 20:5–6 (ESV): three or four generations of consequence vs. a thousand generations of love What “searching by candlelight” really looks like: therapy, honest conversations, journaling, listening prayer, and trusted community If this is you — forgiven, but still hurting — this episode is for you. Pick up the candle. Walk into the first room. The Holy Spirit is already there. “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” — Psalm 139:23–24 (ESV) Join us as we stoke that fire, here on Maintaining Fire. 38| What Black Hole Research Reveals About the Bible

What Black Hole Research Reveals About the Bible — Black Holes, Dark Energy & the Gospel Pattern Maintaining Fire | Episode Description What if the most destructive thing in the universe — black holes — looks a lot like the pattern Jesus described on the cross? In this episode, we walk through what cutting-edge cosmology is actually claiming, line it up with Scripture, and see why the gospel pattern of death producing life shows up everywhere — because the same God wrote the story. We talk black holes, dark energy, the invisible 95% of the universe, the Hebrew word nāṭāh ("to stretch out the heavens"), and the John 12:24 seed pattern that ties it all together. 📖 Bible References Hebrews 11:3 (NIV) — "By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." John 12:24 (NIV) — "Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." 1 Samuel 16:7 — God looks at the heart (referenced re: invisible realities) Jeremiah 17:9–10 — the deceitful heart, searched by God Proverbs 4:23 — "Guard your heart…" Hebrews 4:12 — the Word judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart Colossians / "in Christ all things hold together" (Col. 1:17) — referenced in the prayer 🔤 Word Studies nāṭāh (Strong's H5186) — Hebrew verb meaning "to stretch out, extend, spread out" (with broader senses of inclining/bending). Used in Scripture for God stretching out the heavens (e.g., Isaiah 40:22, Jeremiah 10:12, Psalm 104:2). Anchors Section 4 — "He Stretches Out the Heavens." lev / kardia (background, on "the heart is invisible") — biblical sense of the heart as the seat of thought, will, motive, and affection. 🔬 Scientific Sources & Papers Farrah, Croker, et al. (2023) — study of supermassive black holes in ancient, dormant elliptical galaxies; evidence consistent with black-hole mass growing significantly over cosmic time. The "cosmological coupling" proposal — black holes in an expanding universe potentially gaining mass tied to cosmic expansion (Croker & Weiner-style framework). DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) — telescope-mounted survey in Arizona mapping tens of millions of galaxies to measure how dark energy has behaved across cosmic history. DESI-era follow-up analyses linking black-hole formation history (from massive stars dying) to measured dark-energy behavior (proposal still debated in the literature). CERN Large Hadron Collider safety analyses (referenced contextually re: the "boundary of human knowledge" theme — note: CERN section was removed from the final cut). 🎥 Clips Featured Professor Brian Cox on The Joe Rogan Experience #2217 — explaining how matter is categorized in the universe (~95% invisible). Professor Brian Cox — "What happened to everything that fell in?" clip (black-hole interior). Neil deGrasse Tyson — explaining what a black hole is. Neil deGrasse Tyson — "Roach Hotel" black-hole analogy. 👥 Featured Experts (referenced/clipped) Brian Cox — Professor of Particle Physics, University of Manchester; ATLAS experiment, CERN. Neil deGrasse Tyson — Astrophysicist; Frederick P. Rose Director, Hayden Planetarium (American Museum of Natural History). Duncan Farrah & Kevin Croker — lead researchers on the 2023 black-hole / cosmological-coupling paper. 🔥 Key Idea "The science can show us how the universe expands — but only Scripture tells us who is stretching out the heavens, and why." Death producing expansion. Collapse producing kingdom. The cross at the center of cosmology. 37| The Case for Scripture: 3 Shocking Evidences the Bible Is True

The Case for Scripture: 3 Shocking Evidences the Bible Is True Description (with Bible references): In a culture that puts the Bible on trial, can Scripture really stand up to cross‑examination? In this episode of Maintaining Fire, Desmond Flores walks through 3 shocking evidences that the Bible is actually true—not just religious tradition—rooted in passages like 1 Corinthians 15:3‑8 and 2 Peter 1:16‑21. First, we look at the resurrection of Jesus as a real event in history, grounded in eyewitness testimony (1 Corinthians 15:3‑8; Acts 2:22‑24). Then we unpack fulfilled prophecy—how Jesus meets specific Messianic promises such as Micah 5:2, Zechariah 9:9, and Psalm 22:16‑18—and the famous “Texas silver dollar” illustration for the staggering odds of one man fulfilling even a handful of these by chance. Finally, we explore the most overlooked evidence of all: the living testimony of believers whose lives have been radically changed by Christ, just like Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 3:2‑3 and Revelation 12:11. All of this lands in a moment where many are curious about Scripture but unsure what to believe. Recent research shows only about 1 in 5 Americans are truly “Scripture engaged,” even as Bible openness and questions are rising. Barna also finds that roughly two‑thirds of Christians say they’ve wrestled with doubts about their faith (Mark 9:24, Jude 1:22‑23). If that’s you, you’re not alone—and this conversation is for you. Desmond walks through how historical evidence, fulfilled prophecy, and the “letters from Christ” that Paul talks about in 2 Corinthians 3:2‑3, along with the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22‑23 and Jesus’ words in John 13:34‑35, point to a faith that is rooted in reality, not wishful thinking. Along the way, we’ll talk about why hypocrisy and church hurt so often cloud the picture, and how genuine, Spirit‑produced fruit in believers’ lives becomes one of the loudest apologetics the world will ever hear. If you’ve ever wondered, “Is the Bible really true—or are we just assuming it?”, this episode will help you think clearly, anchor your heart in Christ, and become a living letter that points others to Him (Romans 12:1‑2; 1 Peter 3:15).

36| You Can ‘Repent’ and Still Be Lost…Here’s Why

What Does Repentance Have to Do with Salvation? Two men were both sorry for what they did. One confessed out loud — and destroyed himself. The other wept bitterly — and came back. Both felt remorse. Only one repented. What was the difference? In this episode of Maintaining Fire, host Desmond Flores unpacks one of the most misunderstood topics in the Christian faith — repentance. What does it actually mean? Does it save you? Does it come before faith or after? And what happens if your repentance isn't real? We go deep into the Greek word metanoia (G3341) and metanoeo (G3340), walk through key scriptures including Mark 1:15, Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38, 2 Corinthians 7:10, and Romans 10:9-10, and answer the question that every believer needs to settle: repentance doesn't save you — but you cannot be saved without it. According to a 2025 study by researcher George Barna, 34% of adults who regularly attend a Protestant church don't believe they are sinners. If that's true in the church, this conversation has never been more urgent. 📖 Key Scriptures: Mark 1:15 | Luke 13:3 | Acts 2:38 | Acts 16:31 | 2 Corinthians 7:10 | Romans 10:9–10 | Luke 15:17–19 | Ephesians 2:8–9 📚 Word Studies: Metanoia (G3341) | Metanoeo (G3340) 📊 Source: Arizona Christian University Cultural Research Center, George Barna, AWVI 2025 Report #8 — https://web.arizonachristian.edu/CRC/2025/BARNA_CRC_AWVI-2025-8-Americans-Christians-Deny-Their-Sinfulness.pdf 🔥 If this episode encouraged you, hit that LIKE button, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE it with a friend.
