Gallstones: Symptoms, Treatment and Surgery with Dr. Koong Jun Kit

Women are said to be at higher risk of developing Gallstones (Cholelithiasis), but it is also common among men. Gallstones are small, pebble-like deposits in gallbladder that can be life-threatening due to complications and gallbladder cancer. In this video Man Up Malaysia host Kevin Francis speaks to Dr. Koong Jun Kit to find out why #gallstones occur, the signs and symptoms, treatment options, and prevention.   Laprascopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgery and the standard choice in removing the gallbladder through a keyhole surgery. The removal of the gallbladder is safe and does not cause any problem as it is inessential for digestion.  You will also learn about the different types of gallstones (cholesterol stones, bilirubin stones, and brown stones), dissolving gallstones options and some of the more common causes and risk factors.  Here's more about our guest doctor in this episode. Dr. Koong Jun Kit graduated in 2004 and started his surgical career as a trainee in Hospital Ipoh. He qualified from University of Malaya with Master of Surgery in 2012 and began working as a general surgeon in University Malaya Medical Centre where he also pursued his interest and fellowship in HPB Surgery. In 2015, he was offered a position with the HPB unit in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge University Hospital NHS Trust as a clinical fellow where he completed his HPB fellowship in 2016. He then returned to Malaysia, currently a senior lecturer and consultant surgeon with University of Malaya and it's affliates. His clinical and research interest is in benign and malignant HPB diseases. He is also the program manager for a Postgraduate National Organ Donation education program and is active in undergraduate & postgraduate medical education. Unremoved gallstones can cause jaundice, cholangitis, pancreatitis, cholecystitis, and #gallbladder cancer. It is, therefore, essential to undergo treatment. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive procedure that can break down gallstones.
