Marriage Stories is a podcast about the riskiest two words a person can say when they love someone, “I Do”.

People everywhere around the world have been getting married for the past 4000 years. This ancient institution has inspired some of our greatest art, started and ended wars, and remains a centerpiece of human civilization.

And yet, we don’t have a universal formula for wedded bliss, there is not a linear path that a Marriage takes. There are seasons of drudgery, monotony, and even boredom. There are also seasons of joy, the kind that stops you in your tracks as if to say, this, this is what life is all about. Then there is grief, loss, and devastation. The kind that can only come when you love someone enough to risk it all. But ultimately, there is the triumph of two humans deciding to make a marriage work in spite of it all.

Every couple has to write their own story and make their own sense of this immense journey.

This podcast is all about these stories. Listen in as Marriage Therapist Trevor White sits down with a diverse group of real couples across the lifecycle that are making their marriages work, each in their own unique way.

Join us every week as we hear real people talk about Love, Marriage, and the stories that we live to tell.

Navigating Marriage with Tom and Rose

The path a Marriage takes is neither straight or narrow.  When one marries, they are signing up for a journey that will have many twists and turns.  But a Marriage is not judged for how many twists and turns it takes.  It is judged by how it navigates the uncharted territory.  Our couple today could not have imagined the challenges they would run into on their wedding day.  Yet 37 years later they also could not have imagined how much they would enjoy where they have arrived.

Open Relationships, what comes to mind when you hear this term? Depending on your background, understanding of the concept, beliefs, and experience I would imagine a wide range of ideas come up. Non-monogamy has been practiced since the invention of monogamy. However it is normally done in secret and as a betrayal of the trust in a relationship. In recent years, increasing numbers of couples are attempting to experience the benefits of having other romantic connections while still in a loving and trusting relationship. But can this really be done?

You have your major in college that leads you to grad school that leads you to your first job that gets you a network that allows you to get the “good job”. You meet someone and date for three years before getting engaged and then planning a wedding.  You have the two years together as a married couple before you try and get pregnant and then you start your family.  However, for so many couples, this is where the plan goes awry.  What do you do when your perfectly laid plans break down? You take life one day at a time.

Everything is the Same, Just Better with Madhu and Pranav

The concept of Arranged marriage has been around as long as…marriage.  One’s family was significantly involved in the marriage decision for most of the 4000 year history of the decision.  The practice of arranged marriage has significantly evolved, like marriage itself, to prioritize compatibility and love.  Much of the world still misunderstands the idea and is burdened by outdated misconceptions about the practice. Our couple today is a great example of how this process of finding love can be very rich and rewarding.

I love listening to these stories! The host does a great job drawing out the individual stories and allowing each couple to share their unique joys, triumphs, and challenges in their relationships. It reminds me of The NY Times Modern Romance column. Can’t wait the hear more.
