Tupelo & Heart of America Marathon Reviews: Elvis, Steep Hills, and 26.2 Miles

Join us as we kick off fall marathon season with a Labor Day weekend twofer: the Tupelo Marathon in Mississippi and the Heart of America Marathon in Columbia, Missouri. These two races hold a special place in Nathan's 50 state marathon journey, Tupelo was marathon number 3, Heart of America was number 9, and both remain some of our earliest adventures together as a married couple. We'll take you through what to expect on race day, from Tupelo's early 5 AM start and rolling country roads through Lee and Pontotoc counties, to Heart of America's five and a half miles of gravel road, the climb up Easley Hill, and its title as the second oldest continuously running marathon in the country. Plus, Nathan's hobble through the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum right after finishing Tupelo, a dough burger at Elvis's childhood diner, and the year we watched a runner attempt a record in a full suit at Heart of America. We also sit down with Heart of America race director Graham Bartlett for the inside scoop on this year's race. We also are excited to announce our 44th state and marathon: BG26.2 in Bowling Green, Kentucky this November, including a partnership discount code just for our listeners. We Own 3 Timeshares: Westgate, Hyatt & Disney Compared (What We'd Buy Again vs. Sell)

We know timeshares are a hot button topic. There are two camps out there, the owners who've had one for decades and won't hear a word against it, and everyone else convinced it's a scam. We fall firmly into the first camp, and in this episode we're opening up the books on all three of our timeshares to show you exactly why. Married DINK (dual income, no kids) couple, Nathan and Alicia break down their ownership at Westgate Resorts, Hyatt Vacation Club (purchased originally as Welk Resorts before Hyatt's 2022 acquisition), and Disney Vacation Club, covering real numbers, real maintenance fees, and the honest sales pitch experience at each. They share the story of buying their first Westgate timeshare on a whim in Gatlinburg back in 2014, almost selling it during COVID, and how that decision accidentally led them to fall in love with Branson, Missouri. They walk through how points, weeks, and exchanges like Interval International actually work, break down what a real week costs them in maintenance fees versus retail rates, and get honest about the parts of timeshare ownership nobody likes to talk about, aggressive sales pitches, owner update meetings, and rising fees. Most importantly, they answer the question at the heart of the episode: which of their three timeshares would they buy again without hesitation, and which one would they actually sell? As always, we end with a life takeaway: if you use it, it's more than worth it. If you don't, it's a waste, and honestly, that's true of almost anything you'll ever buy. Resorts/Timeshares mentioned: Westgate Branson Lakes Resort - Hollister, MO Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort and Water Park - Gatlinburg, TN Westgate Flamingo Bay Resort - Las Vegas, NV Westgate Park City Resort and Spa - Park City, UT Hyatt Vacation Club at the Ranahan - Breckenridge, CO Villas of Cave Creek - Cave Creek, AZ Four Seasons Residence Club San Diego, Aviara - Carlsbad, CA Disney's Riviera Resort - Lake Buena Vista, FL Disney's Old Key West Resort - Lake Buena Vista, FL Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa - Lake Buena Vista, FL The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort - Lake Buena Vista, FL Other Helpful Links: Westgate Resorts Hyatt Vacation Club Disney Vacation Club Interval International Missed the story of how we got into Westgate in the first place? Why San Miguel de Allende is the Ultimate DINK Destination with Dream Pro Homes

San Miguel de Allende is a four hundred and eighty five year old colonial city in central Mexico, and it's been named the number one small city in the world six separate times by Condé Nast Traveler and Travel and Leisure. In this episode we talk with Greg Gunter, an architect, MBA, and founder of the first Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices franchise in Mexico, about why San Miguel de Allende has become one of the most compelling second home and retirement destinations for DINKs and expats from the United States. Greg has lived in San Miguel de Allende full time since 2009 and sells around twenty five homes a year there, and he walks us through everything someone would need to know before considering a move. We cover the city's UNESCO World Heritage designation and colonial architecture, the residency visa program that makes staying long term easier than in almost any other country, and why homes in San Miguel de Allende are owned fee simple with a deed instead of through the bank trust structure used on Mexico's coast. We also talk through the cost of living, the year round climate at 6,400 feet, the city's seventy five annual festivals, and the safety and language misconceptions that stop a lot of Americans from even considering a home outside the United States. Whether you're a DINK couple thinking about a second home abroad, planning your first trip to San Miguel de Allende, or just curious what expat life in central Mexico actually looks like, this episode covers the history, the lifestyle, and the practical steps to get started. Gatlinburg & Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Where to Hike, Eat, & Drink

What if the destination where you honeymooned became the place you keep returning to for nearly two decades because it keeps getting better every time? Married DINK couple Nathan and Alicia have been going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee since their honeymoon in 2007, and in this episode they share everything they have learned about one of the most popular travel destinations in the country. From heart-shaped jacuzzis at Honeymoon Hills to the best Thai food in the Smokies, from watching Westgate Smoky Mountains nearly burn to the ground in the devastating 2016 wildfire to watching it rebuild and thrive, this is the episode that has been 19 years in the making. They cover the full corridor (Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg) including the exploding moonshine, wine, and whiskey tasting scene, the best restaurants for vegetarians and everyone else, the Arts and Crafts Community Loop that most tourists miss, the only dog-friendly trail on the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and how a timeshare inside a national park became their home base. Plus: the story of what happens when a 23-year-old on his honeymoon asks a small-town Tennessee waitress for "adult entertainment." It went exactly as you would expect. Hot Springs National Park and Bathhouse Row: Everything You Need to Know About Hot Springs, Arkansas

What if one of the best destinations for DINKs (Dual Income, No Kids) in the country was a place that probably never crossed your mind? Join us as we explore Hot Springs National Park and Hot Springs, Arkansas, a city and a national park so intertwined you genuinely cannot tell where one ends and the other begins. We hiked through the Ouachita Mountains in the morning, soaked in a private thermal bath in the afternoon, drank beer brewed from the same spring water that has flowed beneath the city for centuries, and walked a historic street with over 100 years of stories. We also brought our dog, Peppermint Patty, on her very first national park hike, nearly skipped the visitor center and almost immediately regretted it, and came away convinced that Hot Springs belongs near the top of every DINK travel list. Nathan and Alicia, your married DINK couple hosts, share where we stayed, our favorite eats and drinks, the thermal bath experience at Quapaw Baths and Spa, the Beer Bath Taster flight at the only brewery in the world inside a national park, the history of Bathhouse Row and Motel Row, and why the Fordyce Bathhouse visitor center and museum is the one stop you absolutely cannot skip even if you are short on time. As always, we end with takeaways on making adventure part of your everyday life such as a "short visit is always better than no visit!" and "Go do the thing!" Wild Adventures and Clean Nutrition with TRUWILD Co-Founder Zac Curhan

Most performance nutrition products are packed with synthetic ingredients you cannot pronounce. Zac Curhan built TRUWILD to change that, starting with $10,000 and a bad experience on a hiking trail. In this episode he joins married DINK couple (dual income, no kids) Nathan and Alicia to talk clean nutrition for adventure travel, what entrepreneurship really costs, and why you should stop only doing things you know you will finish. We also get into what entrepreneurship does to your relationships and why TRUWILD products are just as much for the person walking their dog in the Florida heat as they are for the athlete crossing a marathon finish line. We have been using TRUWILD products in training, on race day, and on the road, and we are thrilled to finally introduce you to the person behind the brand. South Dakota: Mount Rushmore, the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon, and a Storm We'll Never Forget

Married DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) couple, Nathan and Alicia have made adventure a non-negotiable part of their everyday life. In Episode 20, they take you back to May 2022 and one of the most unforgettable trips of their 50-state marathon journey as Nathan seeks to run a marathon in every state. It started as a straightforward plan: drive from Denver to Keystone, South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore, then head east to Brookings, South Dakota for the Brookings Marathon. Mount Rushmore delivered everything they hoped for and more. What happened on the drive to Brookings did not. What followed was one of the most terrifying experiences of their lives, a storm that stopped traffic on the highway, turned the sky pitch black in the middle of the afternoon, and changed everything about how this trip was going to go. The marathon was gone. The town had no power. They pivoted to Minnesota, got that state crossed off, and still needed South Dakota. A few weeks later, the day after Alicia ran the Revel Rockies Half Marathon in Morrison, Colorado, they drove back to South Dakota for the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon. And Deadwood had a few surprises of its own. They had the chance to sit down with the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon race director, Emily specifically for this episode. Emily has been the race director since 2010. She shares the race's history, its place in the Deadwood community, and everything she has built around race weekend this year. If you have ever thought about running a destination marathon, this conversation will move the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon to the top of your list.
