Matt Waldman RSP Podcast: This Is Not A Football Episode

Matt Waldman shares his thoughts about being white with a black family, growing up in the U.S., and how to be a better ally against systemic racism.

If you're on Twitter, you've probably seen my 4-5 threads about what's happening in our country, what you should know that's indicative of the black experience with it, and how to be a better ally. I've recorded them to a podcast along with additional thoughts and stories for those who aren't on Twitter.

Matt Waldman’s RSP Scout Talk with Russ Lande: Rookies Who May Need a Second Team, On-Field Intangibles, and Camera Angles

In this episode of the RSP Scout Talk podcast, Matt Waldman and Russ Lande share eight rookies who may need a second team to achieve NFL success, on- and off-field characteristics of mentally and emotionally resilient players, and the value of studying players with the All-22 and the broadcast angle.

What do Ben Barch, Denzel Mims, Brycen Hopkins, Isaiah Simmons, Jordan Love, and three other rookies have in common? They're players that Russ Lande and I think might need a second team to unlock their skills.  In addition to discussing the rationales for our thoughts on these eight players, we also delve into stories about on-field intangibles that matter about football prospects—including stories about Russell Wilson, Adrian Peterson, Nick Chubb, and Peyton Manning.

We also share where we find broadcast tape valuable for the evaluation process and why more open-minded organizations will eventually incorporate it into their film study as a supplement to the All-22 and other camera angles that are becoming available.

We finish the episode with a conversation about the realities of football and sport returning during the pandemic.

With the exception of the final segment, it was another fun episode for your listening pleasure.

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast: Wide Receiver Roles, QB Evaluation Criteria, and 2020 NFL Projections Standouts

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast: Wide Receiver Roles, QB Evaluation Criteria, and 2020 NFL Projections Standouts

Matt Waldman's RSP Cast covers the differences between the three different roles for wide receivers, the value of highly detailed evaluation criteria for the quarterback position, and players standing out (for better or worse) during his first round of 2020 NFL projections.

Wondering about the differences between the slot, flanker, and split-end roles for receivers and what scouts do to differentiate them? Matt begins the show with a look at these three roles, why there are no hard-and-fast rules for players who fit these roles,  and a quick look at some 2020 wide receiver prospects and why that fits certain spots.

Matt continues the show with a dive into his new evaluation criteria for quarterbacks that will appear in the 2021 Rookie Scouting Portfolio. Matt explains the value of rich detail to answer a basic but specific question that is at the root of player evaluation. He also works through specific criteria and their weight within the evaluation.

To finish the show, Matt discusses players who stood out during his first round of projections for the 2020 NFL season including, Todd Gurley, Matt Stafford, T.Y. Hilton, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast: 22 Rookies, 4 Landing Spot Scenarios

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast: 22 Rookies, 4 Landing Spot Scenarios

Matt Waldman discusses 22 rookies from the 2020 NFL Draft class and groups them into four categories of development and production potential based on their team landing spot in this week's RSP Cast.

Which 2020 NFL draft class landing spots offer the highest variation of production potential year-one? Which will lead the players to bounce around the league before having a shot to stick and contribute? Who are players Matt wants no part of based on their landing spot, regardless of their talent? And which rookies are buried on a roster now, but could emerge years from now?

These are the topics of discussion in this week's RSP Cast. The players span the range of early-round talents like Devin Duvernay and Laviska Shenault to UDFAs like Brian Herrien, Austin Mack, Scotty Washington, Stephen Sullivan.

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast–Scout Talk with Russ Lande: The Pandemic and Scouting Football

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast–Scout Talk with Russ Lande: The Pandemic and Scouting Football

In this episode of the RSP Cast's Scout Talk, CFL, and former NFL Scout, Russ Lande joins Matt Waldman for a conversation about the impact of the global pandemic on NFL scouting in 2020 and 2021.

What do scouts and coaches do immediately after the NFL Draft and how will that change thanks to the Covid-19 virus? Russ Lande and I discuss the schedules of scouting departments and how the pandemic could generate a permanent and positive outcome for the profession when it comes to travel, expenses, education, and communication with coaches.

Then, we look ahead to 2021 and discuss the potential challenges that the pandemic could pose for NFL scouts, prospects, and agents for the coming year. This includes why some within the NFL may decide an NFL Draft in February may hold an advantage for the teams but be disruptive for other parties deeply involved with the process.

We also discuss offseason moves (the draft, UDFAs, and free agency) we liked from the 2020 campaign, including picks by the Packers, Seahawks, Chargers, Cardinals, Falcons, Browns, Vikings, and Steelers.

We end the show with a conversation about Jake Fromm's fit in Buffalo and how his arrival could be mutually beneficial to Allen and Fromm.

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast: Seven Intriguing 2020 NFL Draft Landing Spots

Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast: Seven Intriguing 2020 NFL Draft Landing Spots

On this week's RSP Cast, Matt Waldman discusses landing spots for seven prospects from the 2020 NFL Draft class where one or two details about those players' games could be the difference between starter production and careers as contributors or reserves.

This week's podcast is a solo effort devoted to eight players who intrigue me—a quarterback and pairs of running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends. I explore the details of each of these players and their landing spots to reveal why fans should monitor those players for 1-2 developments that could unlock their games to another level:

    * How Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins could be on the brink of stardom by the end of the season.

    * Why Detroit's coaching staff and Kerryon Johnson are the reasons D'Andre Swift a boom-bust prospect in Detroit.

    * Jake Fromm is in a sink-or-swim situation and if he shows signs of swimming, look out in 2021 or 2022.

    * Antonio Gandy-Golden's small-school affiliation may be the key to him out-performing his draft position.

    * The player on New England's squad who could potentially deliver what Phillip Dorsett couldn't.

    * Why Harrison Bryant's situation is better than it appears in Cleveland.

    * The Atlanta tight end who could emerge from UDFA anonymity to become a viable NFL starter
