Cohen Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies

Welcome to Memory. Evidence. Change., a podcast that engages a wide range of guests whose lives and work intersect with the fields of Holocaust and genocide studies.  Episodes in this podcast take one of three different formats: “Memory” episodes feature individuals with lived experience related to genocide or mass atrocity. “Evidence” episodes feature academic experts with emerging or establish research projects. And “Change” episodes feature individuals who have worked to implement change in our world. The Cohen Institute is a nonpartisan entity that aims to advance public understanding of the Holocaust and genocide. Many of our guests have a connection to our events, research division, or other programs. However, the perspectives and opinions of our guests should not be taken as representative of the Institute or College. We engage each guest from a place of genuine curiosity without attempting to endorse or dismiss their views. Our approach to this podcast is to ask informed questions that can help our listeners better understand the work or perspectives of our guests. Through thoughtful conversation and the sharing of information, we equip listeners with deeper understanding of genocide and other atrocity crimes so that they can better navigate the world around them.     From Cambodia to New Hampshire: Bodie Barton's Journey of Survival, Family, and Gratitude

    In this episode of Memory, Evidence, Change, host Kate speaks with Bodie Barton, a survivor of the Cambodian genocide and a 1997 graduate of Keene State College. Bodie reflects on his childhood in Cambodia, the sudden violence that shattered his family's life, and the years of displacement, hunger, and loss that followed under the Khmer Rouge regime. He shares memories of the loved ones who helped him survive, including his mother and brother, and recounts the long journey that eventually brought him to the United States as a refugee. Today, Bodie works to support others through his career in human services, drawing on his own experiences of trauma, resilience, and healing. Throughout the conversation, he offers powerful reflections on gratitude, community, and the importance of listening to one another's stories. This episode is part of our Memory Series, featuring firsthand accounts from individuals whose lives have been shaped by genocide and mass atrocity.

    Militarized Masculinity, Memory, and Violence: Dr. Lisa DiGiovanni on Spain and Chile

    In this episode of Memory, Evidence, Change, our host speaks with Dr. Lisa DiGiovanni about her book Militarized Masculinity in Spain and Chile: Remembering Violence through Film and Literature. Dr. DiGiovanni explores how gender, militarism, and authoritarian power intersect in dictatorial regimes, and how film and literature help us understand the cultural forces that sustain violence. Drawing on feminist theory, historical analysis, and visual storytelling, she explains the concept of militarized masculinity and its role in shaping political repression under the Franco and Pinochet regimes. The conversation also examines how memory, media, and critical analysis can help us recognize patterns of violence and better understand the roots of authoritarianism in both past and present contexts.     Pink Triangle Legacies: Queer Memory and the Politics of Holocaust History with Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome

    In this episode of Memory, Evidence, Change, host Kate speaks with historian Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome, author of Pink Triangle Legacies and founder of the Pink Triangle Legacies Project.
