Opening Up Psychiatry Access in Rural Areas with Scott Farber (Mental Health Partnership)

Gil and Jess were thrilled to speak with Scott Farber, CEO of Mental Health Partnership (MHP), about his approach to solving the psychiatry access problem in rural areas. MHP acquires or partners with behavioral health practices around the country to improve operations and reach, therefore transforming outcomes and access. Scott shares his personal context for his pivot from education and nonprofits into this space, then talks through how he thinks about attracting and retaining mental health professionals, the benefits of an integrated model for patients, and how startups are pushing value-based care in new ways. It was a pleasure to have him on the show.

Modernizing the EHR and Building Evidence for Innovation with Lucia Huang (Osmind)

Modernizing the EHR and Building Evidence for Innovation with Lucia Huang (Osmind)

This episode features Lucia Huang, Co-Founder and CEO of Osmind, who brings a refreshing take to her work building a new kind of electronic health record (EHR) for behavioral health practitioners. In this conversation, Lucia explains why advanced tools for clinical decision support and documentation are so important for evidence-backed innovation. She also shares her belief in the need for objectivity in behavioral health, a historically highly subjective field, as Gil and Jess inquire about the use of haptics as applied to symptomatology and diagnosis. The themes of data and simplicity continue to ring true as she delves into the challenges of provider burnout, reimbursement, regulation, and scaling - noting that for any waves to be made in this space, we have to start looking closer at high acuity patients. Her deep understanding of how technology and psychiatry can weave together to improve costs and outcomes made her such an enlightening guest to have on the show.

Improving Access to Therapy and Chasing Mission with Kyle Talcott (UpLift)

In this episode, Gil and Jess are joined by Kyle Talcott, Founder and CEO of UpLift, to talk about his journey to rebuild mental healthcare by building UpLift. They cover a ton of ground, including collaboration between therapy and psychiatry when solving the access problem, the importance of triage and referrals, and how best to leverage partnerships. They also get real about some of the biggest challenges in behavioral health - particularly when it comes to reimbursement and regulation. And finally, a really thought-provoking exploration of the tradeoff between mission and business as a startup in this space. Hint: patient care must always come first.

Normalizing Eating Disorders for Better Care with Amanda D'Ambra (Arise)

Normalizing Eating Disorders for Better Care with Amanda D'Ambra (Arise)

Gil and Jess speak with Amanda D'Ambra, Co-Founder and CEO of Arise, about her mission to change the game when it comes to eating disorder care. Arise is a virtual platform addressing a huge gap: 1 in 10 people will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime, but up to 90% will not get the care they need. In this episode, Amanda talks about her own eating disorder recovery journey and how it led her to start Arise. She also dissects the misconception that eating disorders are niche, advocating for why this type of treatment should be acknowledged (from a stigma standpoint) and covered (from a payment perspective) alongside any other healthcare issue. The only thing more powerful than her words on this topic is her vision for how to fix it, and it was a privilege to learn more about that through her lens.
