You'll hear about how Rabba Aliza learned all of the six orders of the mishna with each of her children in advance of their bnai mitzvah, two mishnas at a time. Mishna Accomplished begins on Sunday, April 19 with the first two mishnayot of tractate Rosh Hashana. New episodes will be published three times per week through Shavuot 5786.

  1. Episode 1

S4E1: Starting a court case on Friday afternoon (Shabbat 1:1-2)

Today we start our new tractate, Shabbat! I explain why I chose Shabbat and some of the considerations when picking a longer tractate. I talk about how we want to frame our learning about Shabbat and how the mishna’s focus on “don’t” creates an imperative for us to add elements to remind ourselves of the joys of Shabbat. We learn the first mishna, about transferring, and I heavily recommend simplifying the first sentence. The second mishna starts where we might expect Shabbat to start: On Friday afternoon, thinking about what things we should not start if we might not be able to finish them. You can find these mishnas here.  I’m excited to announce that I’ll be teaching a class for the Valley Beit Midrash on the topic of “What does the Mishna Teach us about the People who Wrote it?” on Thursday, September 10 at 10am PST/1pm EST.
