Mixed Blessing
"So what are you?" Chandra Crane knows what it's like to get that question. She has a Thai birth father, a European American mother, and an African American father who adopted her when she was five. With this mixed multiethnic and multicultural background, she has keenly felt the otherness of never quite fitting in. Where do people of mixed ethnicity belong? Those of us with multiethnic backgrounds may have pain surrounding our mixed heritage. But we also have the privilege and potential to serve the Lord through our unique experiences. Join Chandra as she explores what Scripture and history teach us about ethnicity and how we can bring all of ourselves to our sense of identity and calling. As a biracial son of a black dad and white mom, racial/ethnic/cultural identity intersections have always been complicated at best. Add to that the nuance of being a light-skinned black man raised in predominantly white religious and educational spaces, and you have the kind of inner conflict that demands far more spaces and resources than seem to exist for people exploring this kind of intersectionality. Then again, it’s only been legal in America for people like me to be born for about half a century, so intellectually I realize there has been little time to create communities around processing these complexities. That said, in a relative desert of thoughtful and engaging spaces around what it means to be mixed, this podcast is an oasis.

Chandra blends curiosity and thoughtfulness and humor in such a beautiful way. Each episode truly feels like two friends sitting together and being their genuine selves. This podcast is such a treat!

As someone who will be parenting mixed ethnicity children this podcast has given me a lot to think about. I appreciate the transparency that both Chandra, and her guest have been willing to have in each episode. As a black man who’s spent a significant part of his life in white dominated spaces I’ve felt a sense of solidarity in many ways with my multi-ethnic siblings experience, but I’ve also been amazed at some others that have been unique to each of them. Like I said I’ve been given so much to think about, I look forward to learning more, and I can’t recommend this show enough!
Such a Unique and Helpful Perspective

I heard of Chandra after reading her book (same title as this podcast) and it has been incredibly helpful to have so much space dedicated towards unpacking the experiences and identities of mixed people. Being a multi-ethnic person myself, the only people who could understand my experiences were my brother and sister. I’m thrilled to now extend that audience to Chandra’s open table. I look forward to every conversation and learn something new and exciting in each episode. If you’re a multi-ethnic person and looking to find a space of belonging and processing, this is it!!
