Puerto Rican Day Parade Festival and history

In this episode of Mofongo Diaries, we talk about the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York and how it grew out of the Puerto Rican migration to the city in the 1940s and 1950s. We explain that it became as a religious festival, later became a parade in Spanish Harlem in 1958, and then moved to Fifth Avenue, where it grew into a major public event. We also discuss how Puerto Ricans in New York are seen as different from Puerto Ricans on the island and from Puerto Ricans in other places. We talk about the strong visual display of Puerto Rican identity at the parade, including flags, clothing, and the annual custom sneaker. We also mention how the parade reflects pride, but also changing neighborhood demographics and the movement of Puerto Ricans away from New York. Another part of the conversation focuses on cultural language differences, humor, and shared references across generations. We talk about pronunciations and terms used by Puerto Ricans in New York and on the island, and how family, age, and place shape the way we speak. We also reflect on representation and cultural connection, including Puerto Rican figures in music, film, sports, and comedy, and how people claim pride in those who are seen as part of the community. We close by talking about the need to keep connecting with the culture, support Puerto Rico, and pay attention to ongoing problems on the island, including electricity rationing and post-hurricane conditions.
