Ep 31 - Medical Missions to Ghana - Author June Agamah, MPH

Happy summer! The guest for today has had an extra special impact on my life as the picture of what nurturing and international service- oriented mother could look like. I had the privilege of joining June Agamah and her husband, Dr. Edem Agamah, and a team of health professionals on my first medical missions trip to Ghana in 2003. June with International Health and Development Network have built a hospital they run in Agbozome.

JUNE C. WOOD AGAMAH, MPH, born in Guyana, South America, is currently Logistics Coordinator for International Health & Development Network (www. ihdn.org), a 501©3 nonprofit organization established to help poor villages in the developing world. June, an internationally recognized Public Health Leader, has coordinated thirty-seven mission trips to Ghana and raises annual support to help thousands get access to quality health care.

June Co-Chairs the local Community Health Giving Circle in her home town, Springfield, Illinois. June holds a B.A from the University of New Orleans, and an M.P.H from the University of Illinois at Springfield, Illinois.

June is the author of Caryl’s Closet. "Caryl’s Closet is my story. It begins when I was a young Guyanese-American immigrant, coming of age in a changing society. It is set amidst the backdrop of a new political system that threatened the Guyanese way of life. It unfolds as I grapple with the immigration system of Barbados in my search for prosperity. My life changes with the reality of a heart-stopping loss that propels me on my journey to America. My quest is fraught with stories of what happens to minorities who pay the cost of social assimilation and academic success. This focus and sacrifice robs my children of the knowledge of who I really am. I was unaware of my need to open my heart. Written treasures tucked away in my closet are unearthed and become the catalyst for Caryl’s Closet. This book highlights my rich heritage for my readers and generations to come."

She resides in Springfield, Illinois. June is married to Dr. Edem Agamah and three daughters, Sarah Agamah, Aseye Agamah and Miriam Agamah.

    Ep 28 - Money Matters 2 - Warrior Mom - Rhonda Lyle

    Ep 28 - Money Matters 2 - Warrior Mom - Rhonda Lyle

Do you take "No" for an answer? Well, Warrior Mom Rhonda Lyle does not! In this this week's second Money Matters podcast, she makes it clear how to set the stage for money to flow your way so your children will have every opportunity they need to succeed, and then some!

Scholarship coach and author *Rhonda Copeland Lyle:* *Warrior Mom:* *How I Fought* *to Get the Best Education and Scholarships for my Children and Others* ($10M Won!) ** shows us how it is done.

Parents everywhere will do well to pay attention to the new book. Rhonda is the mother of three adult children. As the children entered their early school years in Woodbridge, VA, Rhonda discovered the importance of advocacy on behalf of her son and two daughters. By respectfully forming working relationships with teachers and maintaining oversight of the children’s extracurricular activities, she was able to expose them to numerous fun and educational activities nationally and abroad.

This led them to unexpected and rewarding opportunities that in turn piggybacked, one on another, to reveal heretofore unknown programs with abundant benefits. Learning as she progressed over the years, Rhonda has helped many students and their families successfully apply for and be awarded approximately $10M in scholarship monies. For the Warrior Mom, it has been especially satisfying to see this progress for students and families who might not otherwise have known their children could be eligible for both the funds and the opportunities. There are even programs that cater to students with low GPAs, alternate ways to get college credit and free college.

Wonderful!

I’ve been following Ekua Walker’s podcast since the beginning and have been super-impressed with the variety of topics and range of people that she has interviewed as guests, and her superb ability to listen to and engage with them. Guests have been from many different countries of the African diaspora, including this country, so they’ve brought interesting cultural perspectives to the interviews; they are mothers of children ranging in age from infants to young adults. In today’s episode she interviews Chandria Taylor whose third daughter was born sleeping on November 1, 2018, about her journey towards healing from the grief of stillbirth and infant loss while raising her other young children and teaching Kindergarten. Ekua, in interviewing her guests, shows that moms all over the world share many of the same concerns about raising their children - eating healthy food, the importance of incorporating “me” time into the hard work of being a mom, and instilling empathy and compassion for others in their children. Through her skillful interviewing and interesting guests we learn that moms changing the world come with an array of different strengths.
