We dive into the dystopian world of the novel Silence of the Sparrows and its sequel, Sound of the Sparrows. Each episode of the podcast will feature an excerpt from a chapter and some insight you won’t find anywhere else. We’re going to follow Jude Kane, his sister Maisy, and their neighbor Zara Malik as they cross New America, looking for their brother, who disappeared from their home and whom they believe may have been taken by the government. As they travel, they lend help to many others who also oppose this new government, and without intending to, they begin a movement that may make it harder to find their brother and bring him home.

    Evidence points to New America Defense Forces involvement — the burned and flattened field suggests a military transport — meaning Callum may be detained by the military and facing serious charges. They now must find where he's being held, what he's charged with, and how on earth they are supposed to help him.

    Chapter 5: Vancouver

    Jude, Maisy, and Zara arrive by an illegal transport drone to a bleak fringe of Vancouver dominated by uniform plastic "Cubes"—government-issued “family comfort units” built to house the unemployed. They tend to Zara's injured ankle, gather their strength, and find respite in a hot shower and a warm meal.

    Chapter 4: Wilderness

    After a blizzard forces Jude, Maisy, and Zara into an old hunting cabin, they wake to a flooded shelter and soaked gear. Zara twists her ankle, and Jude builds a makeshift stretcher to get her out. Back at the highway, they discover their motorcycles have been stolen.

The decade-long Transition brings violent uprisings, widespread suffering, and the creation of Sustainable Agricultural Communities (SACs) that live independently under strict conditions, while the promised constitution remains unwritten and many question the cost of stability.
