The Jobs Report You Can't Trust

The jobs report dropped today. 57,000 jobs added in June. Economists expected 115,000. A 67 percent miss. Wall Street celebrated anyway. Here is what the headlines are not telling you. The numbers you are reading are probably wrong. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has overcounted nearly 3 million jobs over the past three years. The agency's survey response rates have collapsed. The data is revised months later, after the markets have already moved. And the people who were supposed to fix the problem just got fired. President Trump fired BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarber this year after the agency released the biggest jobs revision outside COVID-19 in 50 years. The replacement process is not inspiring confidence. Unemployment ticked down to 4.2 percent, but the labor force participation rate fell to 61.5 percent. Fewer people looking means a smaller denominator. The rate looks better. The reality doesn't. The uncounted are not in this report. They are the ones who stopped looking. The ones the participation rate quietly subtracted from the denominator so the headline number could tick down one tenth of a percent. The data is broken. The agency that produces it is in chaos. Eposide 22: The One Percent Blind Spot

Gallup just surveyed 23,000 American workers. When laid-off employees were asked why they lost their jobs, only one percent said AI. That sounds like good news. It isn't. Workers who don't use AI were three times more likely to be laid off than those who do. In tech, the gap was even worse: 6% layoff risk for monthly AI users, 18% for everyone else. Nobody got a termination letter that said: "replaced by algorithm." They got told it was a restructuring. The outcome was the same. Meanwhile, nearly 150,000 tech workers have lost their jobs this year. For the third straight month, AI was the leading cause cited in layoff announcements. And here's what nobody is covering. Colorado had the only law in the country that would have forced employers to disclose when AI influenced a hiring or firing decision. It was set to take effect June 30th. It's dead. xAI sued to block it. The DOJ intervened on xAI's side. The governor signed a replacement that stripped out the disclosure requirements and pushed it to 2027. Alan Greenspan died at 100.
