Intentionally Unplugged with Denise Roland | Episode 31

Intentionally Unplugged with Denise Roland | Episode 31

This week's episode is with the founder of Intentionally Unplugged, aimed at equipping and empowering families to have healthy boundaries with technology.  Denise is a mom of 3 and a teacher, so she sees first hand the impact technology and screens has on her and her kids' lives.  She gives us some suggestions on how to navigate screen time with ourselves and with our kids, especially during these times when it seems like we are all required to be in front of a computer.

This interview really hits home with me because I struggle to separate with my phone and use it as a crutch whenever I'm bored, almost like a reflex.  I try to make a conscious habit of putting it away when I get home from work, but there always seems to be an excuse to take it back out.  Just know that you're not alone out there, and the tips from this episode can be beneficial to all of us!

Also, this will be my last episode as I take a break for a little while to "intentionally unplug".  Our second child was just born this week, so I want to take some time off of interviewing and editing and enjoy her and have some fun with my family!

I hope you enjoy the episode and please don't forget to leave a review, subscribe, and/or follow to help spread the mission of MOVRS!  Thank you!

1000 Hours Outside with Ginny Yurich | Episode 27

1000 Hours Outside with Ginny Yurich | Episode 27

Ginny Yurich is the founder of 1000 Hours Outside, "a global movement designed for any age child (or adult) and any environment" meant to encourage families to spend more time outside.  I have been implementing this program and tracker sheets with my students at school, and with my son at home.  Once you get your kids outside, nature takes care of everything for you.  In this day and age of screen use, it is more important than ever to encourage outdoor play.  Enjoy the show, and be sure to check out Ginny's website and social for more!

"We track a lot of things these days - steps, calories, budgets, frequent flyer miles etc - why not track something so beneficial to our children as well? There are so many things that compete for our time so it's easy for something like this to get back-burnered. We found that if we spread these 4-6 hour chunks out over a few days (shooting for roughly 20 hours a week) it would take us to averaging about 1,000 hours of outside activity a year. That seems insane, maybe - we get it. But did you know the average American child spends 1,200 hours a year in front of screens? Now THAT seems insane to us, but hey, we get it - parenting is hard and sometimes those screens 'seem' like such a welcome reprieve from the chaos. We certainly are not militant about it and we don't take a  'no screens ever or you will surely die' approach either. But we would, quite vehemently, argue that nature- big, beautiful, bountiful nature - is the absolute and very BEST reprieve for you and your children. Honestly, they don't even compare!"

What is Physical Literacy? with Keegan Martin | Episode 26

What is Physical Literacy? with Keegan Martin | Episode 26

In this episode we have a returning guest Keegan Martin of The Brand X Method.  Keegan  is the Director of Education for the Brand X Method and explains to us what Physical Literacy is and why it is important in any youth program.  This is a component of Physical Education and youth training that I don't hear about often enough, but I think it should be at the core of what we do with kids.  In a world where kids are specializing in sport at a younger age every year, it is increasingly important for this kids to develop a broad and solid base of movement.  Physical Literacy equips kids with the tools they need to take on any physical task with confidence and competence.  Hope you enjoy the show!
