Mudfish Adventures

Hey, I am Capt. Steve Stubbe, I have been working and playing on the water since 1977 from the Texas Gulf Coast to the Canadian tundra – hunting, fishing, working, a member of several bass clubs, fishing tournaments, guided for the Sunshine kids fishing tournament (fresh & salt water) for several years and attended seaman schools. I was a regular guest on The Bob Stevenson's Outdoor Show (610 Sports in Houston) for three years. My wife (Tamie) and I were given the opportunity to start our own radio show. I was the host of an AM radio talk show in Houston on Saturday mornings for 52 weeks. This call-in talk show was named TechReps and was based on technical pros talking about mechanical repairs and the outdoor sporting goods industry. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot. I was traveling to Venice, Louisiana for work and noticed a boat running in a canal with heavy vegetation and logs and this boat operator did not slow down. That's when I said to myself "I need to find that boat manufacture (GatorTail)! That's the boat I need for Toledo Bend Lake". I called the GatorTail factory and with their boat building guidance they built me a custom boat to my specifications. It's mind blowing all the places I could see from my fiberglass boat but just couldn't get there. Now my GatorTail boat can get me there. This rig has changed the way I fish. Let me take you there! When I took my friends out fishing they would always mention that it was more like an adventure than fishing. This inspired me to start Mudfish Adventures, LLC fishing guide service so other people could experience the beauty of the backcountry of Toledo Bend Lake. I am able to guide a two person party to the fishing flats and backcountry (with no boat pressure) on Toledo Bend's Palo Gaucho area and the Mid Lake area. Capt. Scooby specializes in Bass on The Fly or conventional fishing. Book your trip today, call 1-844-MUD-FISH.

Offshore Fishing Captain Marty Spencer | Swordfish, Louisiana Marsh Fishing & Charter Life

Recorded at the 2026 Hunt Fish Podcast Summit at Pintail Hunting Club, this episode of the Mudfish Adventures Podcast features Captain Martha "Marty" Spencer, a Louisiana charter captain who built a career in offshore and inshore fishing after leaving a successful job as a broadcast meteorologist.  Martha shares how her path into the outdoors began later in life when she moved to Louisiana and discovered the world of hunting and fishing. That passion eventually led her to help create the outdoor television show Bayou Wild, which spent ten seasons highlighting Louisiana's unique wildlife, culture, conservation stories, and outdoor traditions.  The conversation dives deep into the realities of life as a charter captain. Martha discusses the long days, the high cost of offshore boats, and the demanding work required to guide anglers in the Gulf of Mexico. From catching live bait and running offshore boats to managing clients and navigating weather, she explains what it really takes to succeed in the charter fishing industry.  One of the highlights of the discussion is Martha's passion for swordfishing, one of the most challenging forms of offshore fishing. Targeting swordfish can require dropping bait more than 1,000 feet deep and waiting patiently for a single bite, often resulting in multi-hour fights with massive fish.  The episode also explores Louisiana marsh fishing for redfish, speckled trout, and flounder, the role of conservation regulations in fisheries management, and how Martha is helping introduce more women to fishing through educational trips and outdoor experiences. From swordfish and tuna offshore to redfish in the Louisiana marsh, this episode is packed with stories, fishing knowledge, and insight into what it takes to build a life on the water. Topics covered in this episode Becoming a charter fishing captain in Louisiana Swordfishing in the Gulf of Mexico Redfish, speckled trout, and marsh fishing tactics Life working as an offshore deckhand and captain Catching live bait and offshore fishing strategy The realities of running a fishing charter business Encouraging more women to get involved in fishing and the outdoors If you enjoy offshore fishing, charter fishing stories, conservation, and life on the water, this episode is one you won't want to miss.

From Toledo Bend to the Lower Laguna Madre: Fly Rods, Redfish, Sunscreen & Smart Fishing

In this episode of the Mudfish Adventures Podcast, Captain Scooby is joined by South Padre Island guide Captain Trae Peña and his dad Lupe—two anglers who've spent the last several years trading saltwater flats for a little freshwater adventure on Toledo Bend. What follows is a wide-open conversation about fly rods, redfish behavior, sunglasses, sunscreen, boat safety, fishing culture, and why the Mudfish rod has become one of Trae's go-to tools on the water. Trae shares insights from 10+ years guiding the Lower Laguna Madre, one of the saltiest and shallowest bays in the world, where tailing redfish, speckled trout, and flounder hunt in knee-deep gin-clear water. He breaks down why accuracy, fast loading, and quick shots matter more than anything—and why the compact Mudfish rod has changed the game for sight-casting in ultra-shallow water. The guys dig into casting styles, fly design, how to "bully" big redfish and snook out from under docks, and what happens when a woolly bugger goes head-to-head with a school of reds (spoiler: not much). From there the episode dives into gear talk—Costa sunglasses and lens color choices, the truth about SPF, dangers of cheap sunblock, breathable shirts, waders, and why your nose hurts when you pick the wrong pair of glasses. They also discuss responsible boating, water etiquette, new-generation mudfish rods, and why massive horsepower boats ripping the bays at 60 mph may be damaging the fishery. Lupe jumps in with stories about camera work, switching to the new Mudfish scoping rod, and suddenly casting double the distance with zero weight on the line. The trio also cover fly patterns, including Trae's deadly "Krusty Krab" redfish fly, topwater poppers, and how different colors and foam shapes change the strike. The episode wraps with conservation talk, Toledo Bend bass behavior, stocking efforts, client expectations, release ethics, and how Trae balances his guiding life with being a family man. If you love fishing—freshwater, saltwater, fly, or conventional—this episode is packed with practical wisdom, hilarious stories, and expert insight from two fisheries a world apart… connected by good rods, good people, and good times on the water. Floating the Sabine River: Tradition, Tackle, and True East Texas-Louisiana Adventure

In this episode of the Mudfish Adventures Podcast, Captain Scooby sits down with guests Robert Hannibal and John Monteith for a deep-dive into one of the Sabine River's most beloved traditions—an annual multi-day float trip that began almost two decades ago and continues to grow in legend. Recorded after their most recent journey from Toledo Bend Dam down to Burr Ferry, this conversation paints a vivid picture of river life: pristine weather, eager bass in untouched water, big crappie bites, and the kind of camp camaraderie you only get when you're miles from the nearest road. The guys break down boat setups, fishing tactics, creature baits, white perch hotspots, and even the occasional accidental treble hook extraction (thankfully with a vet and five techs on site!). They also share hilarious camp stories—trailers sinking into clay ramps, wrestling sandbars, teenage boys rampaging through the night, a floating TV for the LSU game, and the kind of river lore that sticks with you forever. You'll also learn how the trip originally began as a squirrel hunt, why picking the right water level matters, and what newbies need to know if they want to paddle (or motor) this stretch safely. Along the way, Scooby shines a spotlight on his guests' lives back home in Sabine Parish—Robert's dual role as dealership manager and Mayor of Many, and John's work developing waterfront properties around Toledo Bend. As always, it's stories, community, and a whole lot of woop-woop! spirit. Whether you're planning your own Sabine float, love hearing fishing adventures, or just enjoy good Southern storytelling, this episode is packed with knowledge, laughs, and the heart of Mudfish country.
