    Miles Davis I: Too Cool for School

    What does the word "cool" mean to you? Chances are, you've never thought as hard about it as you are right now. Miles Davis is considered one of the "coolest" people to have ever lived, but what exactly made him so cool anyway? Well, you're about to find out.  I've never done more than two episodes of Music Legends on a single band or musician and fully anticipated continuing this trend when I started researching Miles Davis for Music Legends back in September of 2019. After months of long nights of research and production, it became clear that just one episode wasn't quite going to cut it. Now, here we are. Just days away from 2022, and I'm finally unleashing this epic journey. Season 2 of Music Legends is a highly narrative-driven format that navigates through Miles Davis's crazy life by transporting the listener straight to Davis's most life-changing moments. Weaving through his experiences and getting to know characters who had tremendous impacts on Miles Davis throughout his life, you will feel like your right there in the middle of the chaos. You will learn something you never knew about Miles Davis and by the end of the series, you will hopefully have a new outlook on what exactly it means to be "cool" In this episode, the first episode of season 2, Miles Davis receives his very first trumpet and becomes enchanted with jazz.     Happy New year! I'm back to kick off 2022 with the next chapter of the Miles Davis story. In this episode, episode 2 of Season 2. Miles feels a whirlwind of emotions. He struggles with finding his purpose and filling a certain emptiness that lives within him. He also meets one of the few true loves of his life, only to leave her. All of this causes him to spiral downward and out of control.     Music Legends is back once again with the next chapter of the Miles Davis story! In this episode, episode 3 of Season 2. Miles finds himself stuck in the hospital recovering from surgery to remove polyps from his larynx. He receives a heated visit from Charlie Parker that leaves him in a fit of rage and permanently damaged vocal cords.     Music Legends is back again with the next chapter of the Miles Davis story. In this episode, episode 4 of Season 2, a multitude of events occur, slowly tipping Miles's emotional scale from cool to fool. A brawl with a dirty racist cop outside a sold-out theatre. A dangerous drug-fueled speed race across NYC against fear itself.     As Miles Davis fell deeper into addiction, colder and darker sides of his personality emerged. Fear, Jealousy, and rage seeped into all aspects of his life. His relationship with his wife, Frances Taylor Davis, had been turning sour ever since he pulled her dream job from under her feet. Now it turned violent after a night out on the town. Miles Davis went from cool to fool to now ice cold.     Motivated by his growing rage for the corporations and privileged whites who turned jazz into boring elevator music, Miles Davis takes yet another U-turn in the winding road of his career. This time, he teams up with the free love movement and some of the best funk and rock & roll musicians of the time to create what Carlos Santana called "Music that gets you high just by listening to it."     Miles Davis VII: Beginning Of the End

    In 1972, Miles Davis's endless touring started catching up with him. He started taking more trips to the beach and fewer trips to the studio and found himself gazing out at the waves and the statue of liberty in the distance. As he pondered thought after thought while popping pill after pill, he decides to retire from music. This decision shook his soul to the core yet brought his body and mind an eerie inner peace. But the peace didn't last for long as he wound up nearly dead just hours later. Was this the beginning of the end? or the end of the beginning?     Miles Davis VIII: The Lost Years

    Miles Davis seemingly vanished off the face of the earth in late 1975. However, Miles himself just called it retirement. In a period in Miles Davis's life that would become known as "The Lost Years," The snowball effect of his destructive lifestyle began picking up more momentum than ever. The walls of his 700-square-foot town home were closing in on him from all sides. By 1978 Miles was barely surviving. Strung out in a constant state of manic intoxication, Miles receives a surprise visit from his eight-year-old son, who got a raw glimpse into his father's "retirement." Would it be the key to helping Miles end the cycle of destruction, or dig him deeper into the chaos?

    Miles Davis IX: Reinvigorated, but Still Kind of Blue

    Miles Davis had finally ventured out of his drug den for an interview with Julie Coryell, which leads to an unexpected turn of events. Unexpected, especially to Miles himself.  The unique combination of embarrassment, shame, and having literally run out of drugs on that night eventually led to Miles sobering up. But not before he almost drugged himself to sleep for good. When Miles begins again, he tries to start new, and lead a simple life, but new challenges emerge when he is made to face his inner demons.     Miles Davis X: What Does Cool Mean toYou?

    In the final episode of Music Legends, Season Two. Miles Davis finds a youthful excitement in experimentation. He excels in using modern recording equipment and electronic instruments to make his last few iconic, genre-shifting albums. He also explores an entirely new art form via paintbrush and canvas.  A few months before Miles passed away, he told a close friend “The gods don’t punish people by not giving them what they want. The gods punish people  by giving them what they want and then not giving them time.”  Although those final years of Miles Davis's life might seem creative and peaceful, the truth is that he was in a constant race with time. Will he run this race to the grave?
