    25. Are We Addicted to Struggle? (Embracing A "Soft Life" Approach)

In this episode, Natalie discusses the idea of a "soft life" and how using it as an approach/ideal can help creative educators. She talks about how our society seems to be addicted to struggle and the cost to be paid for struggle culture. While these symptoms have a dilapidating effects on our minds, relationships, and bodies, somehow they are also showcased as societal signals for importance, value, and worth. Because many elements of the "soft life" approach do not have a tangible/practical/monetary value - (arts, space, creativity, things "just for fun") many do not invest in those things because they don't see their inherent value. But it is EXACTLY this thinking that keeps people in survival mode, struggle mode, with no room for the things that perhaps can help to make one's life more healthy and happy (i.e. "soft life"). With quotes from "Eros At The Piano: The Life-Energy of Classical Music" by William Westney and "Wired to Create" by Scott Kauffman, Natalie discusses the importance of soft life approach (especially for musicians, teachers, creatives) - the need for space, dreaming, development, and free time. She also mentions that part of living a "soft life" is being cognizant of language we use in our lives. Are you using the language of struggle (and inviting it in to your thoughts and life)? Or are you speaking with language that encourages great and beautiful self fulfilling prophecies? Ready to embrace your "soft life?" Listen to episode 25 out now! Follow on IG: @natalieinrenaissance

    23. Does Your Work Give Back To You? Enjoying Your ROI (Return on Investment)

In this episode, Natalie talks about investments that we all make (in work, in the arts, in teaching, in business) and how important it is for US to experience a return on those things. Often referred to in the financial world, ROI (Return on Investment) is a way of evaluating and managing one's investments. But it's not just about a $ amount, or crunching numbers, or being in the green. Every day we are making investments into something. We are spending time, money, and energy on things, whether or not we want to. As providers and givers, business owners and teachers, artists and caregivers, we need to make sure WE derive enjoyment and benefit from those things that we so happily and freely offer to others. Knowing how to frame short term versus long term games in these scenarios is important, especially if the investment (building a business, being a successful teacher, having a beautiful relationship) is really important and meaningful to you. Natalie talks about how she incorporates this thinking into gig playing and also teaching pre-college piano students, and how setting them up for success (receiving a return on their investments) makes all the difference. Both need to work in tandem to avoid being a quick flame without any staying power, or someone who is disheartened by future promises and burns themselves out and gives up because they have nothing to show in their hand at present. When we make sure to enjoy our own skills, our own ideas - your work gives back to you. And those returns and benefits then reinvigorate you, your work, and your ideas. 22. Need Creative/Musical/Artistic Inspiration? Listen to This.

In this episode, Natalie shares her primary source of musical and artistic inspiration. In a world of theoretical, academic learning, we can't negate the power of our humanity and the facets of being an emotional, physical, and sensory human being. For those who have trained in a very specific and niche area and developed very strong "I" skill (convergent thinking), that depth of knowledge can become a huge rut if we cannot develop and also hone our "T" ability. "T" ability is one's openness to relate, collaborate, and re-envision our "I" knowledge with others. "T" ability only enhances and supports "I" skill (just like Serena Williams' study of ballet and hip hop dance informs and enhances her tennis game). For multi-dimensional creatives, having a wealth and diversity of resources helps us to think differently (divergent thinking, rather than convergent "I" thinking). It compounds our areas of expertise, turning our "I" knowledge into an asset - rather than a liability. Since divergent thinking and creative "T" ability thrives on reflection, relaxation, and community, professionals who want to want to see more of this enhancement in their lives need to make room for these things. By living more balanced lives (and not to be overly driven/hustle-based individuals) and valuing rest and recreational hobbies, our areas of specialization in business, performance, and teaching will only be enhanced and supported. 21. Treating Your Mind Like The Precious "Treasure Storehouse" That It Is? (Some Faith Based Perspective on "Manifestation," Energy, Mental Health)

In this episode, Natalie shares her perspective as a faith based girlie using Scripture to shed some light on the importance and preciousness of one's thought world. Based on the texts, we see that our mind is a "treasure storehouse" that needs to be "guarded" and carefully monitored. It's also the "source of life" and the location of our "heart" and our decision making. Our treasured thoughts may sometimes be negative ones that we have habituated ourselves to think - and we can't imagine our lives without - actually distract us and keep us preoccupied so that we can't be mentally free to choose differently or to focus on positive things that would make life so much better. If someone has influence or access to our inner thought world, that is a lot of power. In fact, the whole world is vying for your attention, energy, and thought. Where your thoughts are - there is your attention, your resources, your energy, your money, your choices, and your focus. More reason to guard it and keep watch over it! Natalie shares that mental health is just as important as other aspects of being alive (physical, financial, emotional health). While we all have gone through things that have affected us, we need to choose to believe that we have agency over our thoughts - and act on that. Protect your thought world and choose good thoughts. Our inner world is always at work, influencing our decisions and life even if we aren't cognizant of it. As we encounter and go through various circumstances, we need to make sure that we choose to have a beautiful thought world and belief system no matter what. She also discusses the word "manifestation," why it's gaining traction in today's world, and why some faith-based people are hesitant to use the term. But the basic concept of - that the way you think will shape your life - remains the same. If you don't believe in something, then those things will never appear/be invited/"be manifested" into your life. If you are aware, working for, and thinking of certain things, you will more likely recognize them when the opportunities/steps present themselves - and they will appear ("manifest") themselves into your life. Our mental capacity for belief and imagination is a tool that should be used wisely. Natalie also gives encouragement and shares how her faith framework underpins her outlook as a creator, artist, and podcaster.
