    A Photograph: Marilyn Reading Ulysses

    Long Island, Labor Day weekend, 1955. While Eve Arnold loads a roll of film, the most looked-at woman on the planet takes a battered novel out of her car and starts to read. By the time the film was loaded, the picture already existed. Arnold just walked over, quietly, and collected it. Marilyn Monroe, alone on a playground carousel, bare feet tucked up, her whole body folded around Ulysses like a comma, not looking at the camera. For Marilyn in 1955, being looked at was the job; in this frame, she's off duty. We're not being performed for. We're overhearing. And for decades, people could not, would not, believe it. The dumb blonde of the century holding the Everest of modernist literature had to be a prop, a gag, image-laundering. It took until 1993 for a Joyce scholar, Richard Brown, to do the simplest possible thing: write to Arnold and ask. Her reply is on the record. Marilyn kept Ulysses in her car; she'd been reading it a long time; she read it aloud to make sense of it and found it hard going, dipping in and out. Do you know who else reads Ulysses that way? Everyone. The difficulty is the fingerprint of the truth. Which turns the question around: if she was really reading it, what does seventy years of disbelief say about us? We looked at evidence and called it a prop. The camera didn't lie. We did. The photograph was never on trial. We were. There are three unretouched layers stacked in this one frame: a book that gives a woman her interior voice, held by a woman the world refused to believe had one, photographed by a woman whose life's work was the unretouched woman. Some photographs are just smarter than everyone involved. They wait, and they collect meaning, like interest. Your move this week: go find the Ulysses in someone. Pick a person you think you already know, ask one real question about what they love, and then believe their answer. No knowing little smile.     She didn't own a camera until she was around thirty-four. That wasn't a deadline, it was her starting line: she became the photographer Marilyn Monroe trusted more than any other on earth. In 1952, a small, quiet photographer spent all night photographing Marlene Dietrich. No studio lights, no retouching. A young actress saw those pictures and said: if you could do that with her, just imagine what you could do with me. That was Marilyn Monroe. The photographer was Eve Arnold, William Eggleston's mirror: he was born with everything; she was a rabbi's daughter on a film-developing assembly line when someone gave her a Rolleicord. Her only training was six weeks of night classes, where the great man ridiculed her first attempt. Almost everyone goes home at that point. Eve Arnold went to Harlem. Her spine is the Joan Crawford story: bullied into photographing the star naked and drunk, she taught herself color developing that same night so no one else would ever see the frames, then handed the negatives back. I didn't think they would do me credit. I had in mind a long career. Compassion was the strategy, through everything: Marilyn's decade of trust, a year inside Malcolm X's rallies, China at sixty-seven, a last assignment in Cuba at eighty-five, gone at ninety-nine. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument. Your move this week: photograph someone who trusts you. First, tell them why. Out loud. Then one or two frames, no directing, no retouching. If you don't photograph at all: find an old photo of someone you love and tell them one true thing about it. The caring is the instrument.     A Photograph: The Red Ceiling

    A small room in a small Mississippi town, 1973. A red ceiling, one bare bulb, three white cords — and almost nobody who sees it ever forgets it. Today, for the first time on this show, an entire episode about one single photograph: William Eggleston's The Red Ceiling. On paper it's the most Eggleston subject imaginable — it's nothing, the upper corner of a room, the place your eyes go when you can't sleep. So how does nothing become unforgettable? The answer comes in three parts: a color, a craft, and a friend. The color skips the reading line entirely and goes straight to the body. The craft is dye-transfer, advertising's ultimate print aimed at a ceiling until the red saturates — Eggleston says he's never once seen it reproduced to his satisfaction, and describes the real thing in words nobody will ever beat: when you look at the dye, it is like red blood that's wet on the wall. And the friend is why the critics keep reaching for the word "menace." The room belonged to T.C. Boring, the best friend Eggleston says he ever had — brilliant, chaotic, coming apart, a man who painted the inside of his house red and let one person photograph it, lying across his bed. In 1980 Boring was murdered in that house and the house was burned. No one was ever convicted. Which means the photograph changed jobs: in 1973 it was a picture of a ceiling; today it's the only place that room still exists. A photograph doesn't know it's a survivor. It finds out later. There's a record in this story too — Big Star put The Red Ceiling on the cover of Radio City in 1974. Memphis art on Memphis music. If you want a perfect Saturday afternoon, put that album on and think about what's hanging over it. Your move this week: follow one color. Pick a color that catches you on an ordinary morning and let it lead you for a single day — shop signs, tail lights, a jacket disappearing around a corner. Camera optional; the noticing is the game.     New York, May 1976. MoMA hangs color photographs on its famous white walls for the first time — a tricycle, a freezer, a bare light bulb — and people get angry. The New York Times reportedly called it the most hated show of the year, and answered the curator's "perfect" with a sentence photographers still quote: perfectly banal, perhaps; perfectly boring, certainly. At the center of the fury stood a thirty-six-year-old Memphis aristocrat with no intention of apologizing. This is our first photographer story on the show — and I owe you a small confession about why he's first. This past January I happened to be in New York while William Eggleston: The Last Dyes was on, and I spent two or three hours giving every photograph as long as it asked for. The color doesn't sit on the paper. It comes up off it. His story runs from wanting to make "a perfect fake Cartier-Bresson" to a Memphis supermarket lot in 1965, where a young clerk pushing carts through low golden sun became his first true color photograph — by God, it all worked. Then a Chicago lab's price list and the ultimate print: dye-transfer, advertising's most luxurious tool, turned on dirt roads, freezers, and ceilings until they glowed like stained glass. He didn't just photograph the ordinary. He crowned it. And he handed us his battle cry in five words: I am at war with the obvious. And then there's how he works, and it still won't leave me alone. One frame, one thing — and if he misses? "Then I don't get it. There's always another picture." I'm the machine-gun type of photographer, so that calm, that almost careless grace, has been sitting in the back of my mind since January, and I still haven't finished thinking about it. Your move this week: one frame, one thing. Find one completely ordinary thing — kitchen, street, desk — and photograph it exactly once. One press, no delete-and-redo. If you don't shoot at all, choose the one thing you'd photograph if you were allowed a single frame. The choosing is the whole game.     What It Feels Like to Carry a Camera Every Day

    What happens to a completely ordinary life — the commute, the campus walk, the boring Tuesday — when a camera comes along for all of it. Seven forty-two in the morning, a train platform you've stood on five hundred times — and this morning, because of a small weight against your hip, you finally notice the light coming down the stairwell is gold. It's been gold every clear morning for years. You've just never had a reason to catch it. This week I'm talking about carrying a camera every day. Not on trips — on Tuesdays, to work, to class, to the dentist. It's the question I get more than any other: "Dan, I love all this, but my life isn't photogenic." The first week, the weight is luggage; somewhere in week two it becomes a promise: on duty for noticing. I'll tell you about the commuter, whose bus ride became a hunting ground after one frame at a red light — a man in perfect silhouette against a building turned to embers — and the question that has no cure: "what else have I been not seeing?" And about the note-taker, a student with a one-frame-a-day rule who, by the end of the semester, could no longer walk anywhere boring. She's tried. The boring is gone. If you shoot film, there's one more twist: loading a roll in the morning as an act of optimism, and the tiny accountant in your head asking, before every frame, "really? worth one of the thirty-six?" Film doesn't make you shoot less — it makes you look more. And some of the best days end with zero frames: you saw a dozen photographs, framed them in your head, and let them go like a fisherman releasing fish. The camera did its whole job without being touched. Your street has been performing every morning — full cast, elaborate lighting design — and attendance has been zero. The camera is just the ticket in. Your move this week: carry any camera on your most boring route for three days. No quota. Once, get off one stop early — or leave fifteen minutes sooner and take the long way.     The Art of Keeping Photos

    Thirty thousand photos in the cloud, and maybe fifty you'd grieve. This episode is about the difference between having and keeping. Under my bed there's a shoebox that hasn't held shoes in a very long time. Inside: the laughing man from the flea market, a photo-booth strip from a mall that no longer exists, a harbor I've never visited, and one photograph of my grandmother at twenty, laughing at someone outside the frame. The confession isn't that the box exists — it's that when I can't sleep, I take it out and go through it, photograph by photograph, like a dragon counting coins. Having is what the cloud does: a warehouse, enormous and dark and perfectly organized, that nobody ever visits. Keeping is a verb with your hands in it — this one, out of thirty thousand, promoted from data to belonging. Tonight I make my case for the physical photograph: the weight of a real print, why a photograph having a back changes everything (nobody performs on the back of a photograph — they just tell you the truth), and the strip of negatives we film shooters hold up to the shop window — not a copy of the photograph, but the photograph itself, the source of a moment of your own life. And then my favorite step: keeping photographs you didn't take. Zines, secondhand photobooks, flea-market boxes where a stranger's laugh costs less than your coffee — and your own family's albums, waiting for someone to become their keeper. Every family has an unofficial photo archivist. If you don't know who yours is, it might be you. A thing that can be lost is a thing that can be kept.     Why We Look at Photos (And Why Most of Them Suck)

    We see thousands of photos a day and give each one three seconds. This episode is about what's waiting on the other side of second ten. While cleaning out my phone, I found fourteen photos of a parking spot — and, buried between the receipts and the wifi passwords, one photo of a friend laughing so hard he had to hold on to the table. I'd never actually looked at it. Not once, in two years. Most of the photos in our lives were never meant to be looked at. They're messages, receipts, proof — photos made to be used up. So we've trained ourselves into the three-second habit: look at everything, see almost nothing. But once in a while a photograph refuses to be walked past. It grabs your sleeve. This episode is about what happens when you stop. I'll tell you about a print I bought at a flea market for almost nothing — a stranger laughing at a kitchen table in the 1970s — and how it opens in layers the longer you stay: what it shows, where the photographer was standing, what got cut off at the edges, and the moment before and after — the only surviving half-second of a whole vanished afternoon.
