Season Three, Episode 15: Part Two: The Strength to Move On

Neurotic Nourishment Season Three, Episode 15: Part Two: The Strength to Move

In this second part of our two-part series about Jan and Alan Canty, Jan discusses the fallout of life as she knew it. Jan candidly explores with me the times when she kinda should have maybe known that something was up with her husband of so very many years who turned to a young prostitute for love and affection after Jan -- well, after Jan grew up, for lack of a better wording.

Spoiler alert: Today Jan is an amazing bad-ass, working on her second book, and very much ready to tell the story that once defined her, but no longer does.   If you want to learn more about Jan -- and you should -- you should check out her current book, A Life Divided, and keep an eye out for her second book, which will be released within the next 12 to 18 months.

To find out more about Dr. Canty, you can find her at jancantyphd.com.

Season Three, Episode 14: Part One: My Husband Died Living A Life I Never Knew Existed

Season Three, Episode 14: Part One: My Husband Died Living A Life I Never Knew Existed

When Jan met Dr. Alan Canty, a well-known, well-respected Detroit Psychiatrist, he was eighteen years her senior and quickly became not only her employer, but her biggest cheerleader as well. She proposed to him, suddenly and out of the blue, and their wedding was picked at random when Jan pointed her finger at a calendar. Under Al's guidance, Jan would go from receptionist to college student to a licensed psychologist completing a post-doctorate fellowship.

Join me as Jan and I have a painfully candid conversation about what the f**k you do when you discover that your husband has a mistress who is in the sex industry -- and that he has handed over close to $140,000 to her and her pimp. And when Al runs out of money? He dies.

This is a two-part episode, the second half of which will be released next week. But...if you would prefer not to wait a week, feel free to join our Patreon at the $5 level and you will have immediate access to the rest of Dr. Jan Canty's story as well as 20 other bonus episodes.

Season Three, Episode 13: Murder, Margarita and Mayhem: Talk Murder to Me

Season Three, Episode 13: Murder, Margaritas and Mayhem: Talk Murder to Me You all know about my rapidly growing true crime addiction, so you can only imagine how friggin' excited I was when my guest of a few weeks ago, Dr. Marianne Matzo, happened to mention that her niece hosted a true-crime podcast -- and holy crap, her niece is Nicole LaPorte Perry, one of the three co-hosts of one of my favorite podcasts, Talk Murder to Me! Listening to their podcast is a lot like sitting around a campfire listening to one of your friends tell ghost stories. Jon Perry does the research and editing and then tells the story to the incredibly in the dark and unknowing Nicole and their former roommate, Jen Collins.  Have a listen as I scare the crap out of Jon and Nicole with my creepy stalking/intimate knowledge of their podcast. Find out more about the Talk Murder to Me podcast at talkmurder.com,  on Twitter at https://twitter.com/talkmurder,  on Stitcher at https://www.stitcher.com/show/talk-murder-to-me ,  and on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdyQTnX-4da3gPSyxAwitwA

Season Three, Episode 12: All Expert Testimony Is Opinion

Season Three, Episode 12: All Expert Testimony Is Opinion

Neurotic Nourishment Season Three, Episode 12: All Expert Testimony Is Opinion

Warning: If you're not into bloody crime scenes, this episode *probably* isn't for you. Seriously. Maybe you just skip this one, just this one time, of course.

In today's episode I get to geek out with Anita Zannin, an expert in Blood Spatter Pattern Analysis. Seriously, guys, don't call it blood spatter, that's just a sign of a newbie, or nub as my kids annoyingly and seemingly randomly say.

If you're wondering how Anita came to be an expert in scientific gore, the answer is pretty simple: Kinda by accident. She majored in chemistry, didn't like it, worked in the medical field, still not quite the right fit, was interested in law but not so much being a lawyer, and when an opportunity came up to work with Herb McDonnel, one of the foremost experts in crime scenes who just so happened to testify in the O.J. Simpson case, and no biggie, also trained Henry Lee, a name you might recognize from, oh, I don't know, the Jon Benet Ramsey case, Laci Peterson, and Caylee Anthony, Anita was up for the challenge!

Also, if you are into true crime and you haven't listened to Unraveled, hosted by Billy Jensen and Alexis Linkletter, it's time to pause this podcast and head on over there. Seriously, I won't be offended. They are absolutely f*****g amazing. In their first season they tackled the Long Island Serial Killer case in a way that *actually* made me interested. And in their latest season, season number three, Anita Zannin appears on the show to explain the facts of forensic evidence -- which are much less glamorous than the story the prosecutors like to weave them into.

I guess what I'm saying is that *technically* since Anita came on my podcast and Anita knows Billy and Alexis -- holy shit, my street cred just skyrocketed by association!

Anita's website, az-forensics.com is fantastic, and a perfect resource for the student, the teacher, and the creepy-ass true-crime podcaster like me!

Season Three, Episode 11: How Do You Recover From A Stroke: Marcia Moran

Season Three, Episode #11: How Do You Recover From A Stroke: Marcia Moran

Marcia Moran is the survivor of a massive stroke that caused her to lose the ability to speak (also known as aphasia) and resulted in limited control over the movement in the right half of her body. But, these days Marcia isn't just surviving, she is seriously thriving. Thanks to her hard work, the advocacy of her husband on her behalf, and large amounts of time spent with neurologists specializing in EMDR and brain mapping,

Marcia Moran is an outspoken advocate on stroke awareness, the author of Stroke Forward, the autobiography she penned about the process of recovering from a stroke and advocating for proper medical care -- specifically, the medical care and medical practitioners that are right for *you.*

Colonel Skip ,

Intriguing! Insightful!

As a first time listener I found “What’s up with men and therapy?” fascinating. It resonated, because I was in denial and too proud to seek help myself for a long time.
