108: Stop Eating These "Healthy" Foods & Why Your Gut Biome Is Secretly Sabotaging Your Body | Nutrition Expert Explains

Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to Next Third Best Third! Today I'm doing something a little different — I'm at Build Your Best Gym in Georgetown with Jared Leeper, who owns the gym with his wife, and we're diving deep into nutrition while his clients get after it in the background. I asked Jared to just run with it: what should we actually be eating, what should we avoid, and why. What followed was one of the most eye-opening conversations we've had on this channel, covering everything from protein sourcing to the hidden dangers lurking in our food supply. Jared breaks down why protein is non-negotiable (the word literally means "of utmost importance" in Greek), how glyphosate and GMOs are quietly wrecking our gut biomes, and why that "healthy" diet you think you're eating might be doing more harm than good. We get into the truth about vegetables and oxalates, why berries beat tropical fruit every time, the honey-versus-sugar debate, which nuts and breads are worth eating, and why "cheat days" are the wrong mindset entirely. We close it out talking creatine — backed by over 18,000 studies — and why starting your kids on good nutrition now matters more than you think. If you're a man trying to figure out how to actually thrive instead of just survive, this episode is packed with practical, no-fluff information you can start using today. Jared's contact info is in the show notes if you want a coach who can help you build a nutrition plan that works. As always, thank you for watching, liking, subscribing, and sharing this with the men in your life who need it. Let's make your next third your best third. 107: What Every Man Should Be Able to Do Physically at 40, 60, and Beyond — Most Ignore This

Send us Fan Mail Connect with Jared: https://bybfitnesstx.com/coaches/jared-leeper/ I'm David Fenwick, host of Next Third Best Third, and this conversation with Jared Leeper — owner of Build Your Better gym in Georgetown, Texas — is one of the most practical and eye-opening episodes we've done on the show. Jared has 22 years in the fitness industry and he brings it all here, breaking down exactly what a man should be physically capable of doing at 40, at 60, and beyond. We open with one of the most striking contrasts I've heard in a long time — two grandfathers, both 94 years old, living radically different lives based on one thing: what they consistently chose to do with their bodies over decades. The core of this episode is built around a principle Jared lives by — strength is the mother of all qualities. If you want to get leaner, live longer, burn fat, or feel more alive, the answer starts with getting stronger. We walk through the specific movements every man should have in his toolkit: the ability to sprint, posterior chain strength, squats, and how to build back into all of these safely no matter how long you've been out of the game. If your lower back hurts, your legs are weak, or you've been sitting at a desk for years, this episode gives you an honest, practical starting point. We close with one of the most powerful stories I've heard — a veteran named Rick who went from 292 pounds and a VA diagnosis that told him his best days were behind him, to losing 92 pounds and building a family and a homestead. The lesson isn't just physical. It's about the lies we believe about ourselves and what's possible when someone comes alongside you and helps you reject them. If this episode connects with you, please subscribe, share it with a man who needs it, and help us get this message out there so more men can make their next third their very best third. 106: Why Men Lose Vision in Their 30s — And the Identity Crisis Hiding Behind It

Send us Fan Mail Connect: https://bybfitnesstx.com/ In this episode I sat down with my friend David George at Build Your Better Gym in Round Rock, Texas, for one of the most honest conversations I've had on this show. We got into what I believe is the defining challenge for men in their 30s — and it starts with a lack of vision. Not just a goal-setting problem, but a deeper identity crisis rooted in wounds, lies, and beliefs we picked up long before we had the language to name them. If you've ever felt like you're grinding hard but going nowhere, this episode is for you. What struck me most in this conversation was how much of men's dysfunction traces back to unexamined anger. David and I both came from backgrounds where anger was either buried or weaponized, and we both ended up becoming people-pleasers as a result. That suppressed anger doesn't disappear — it festers, and eventually it either destroys your relationships or becomes the toxic fuel you're running your entire life on. We talked about what it actually looks like to pull that anger out, examine it, and start replacing it with something that can actually sustain you long-term. We also went deep on the concepts of transparency versus vulnerability, the power of intentional friendship, and why attention — not time — is your most valuable currency as a man. If you can do the inner work before life speeds up with kids, careers, and obligations, do it now. The men who are thriving in their later years are the ones who did the hard work early. Subscribe, share this with a man who needs it, and leave a comment — our heart is for men to invest with intentionality so that the next third can be their very best third. 105: Stop Making Excuses and Start Building Wins — The Truth About Getting Healthy After 40

Send us Fan Mail Connect with Max: https://www.berteauxhealthfit.com/ Email: Maxberteaux.training@gmail.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/berteauxhealthfit/ In this episode, I sit back down with movement specialist Max Berto for one of the most honest conversations we've had on this show. We dig into why so many men never get started taking care of themselves — and it has a lot less to do with fitness than you'd think. Max opens up about growing up obese, losing his brother at ten years old, and how that unresolved trauma led him down a path of drinking, opiates, and unhealthy coping mechanisms before joining the Marine Corps and eventually finding his way out. What he shares is raw, real, and exactly the kind of conversation men in their next third need to hear. We talk about the lies that keep men stuck — "I can't," "I'm too old," "it's too late," "I've got arthritis" — and how these aren't just excuses but deeply rooted beliefs tied to identity and unhealed wounds. Max breaks down how he works with clients who have real physical limitations — whether that's severe joint pain, morbid obesity, or decades of sedentary living — and builds them up with small, pain-free wins that compound into real transformation. His approach isn't about crushing someone in the gym; it's about meeting them exactly where they are and proving to them they can do something, then building from there. If you know someone who says it's too late, share this with them. The human body is always adapting — Max watched his elderly grandmother-in-law heal scabs well into dementia. That same healing capacity is in you right now. Every choice you make — whether to park closer or farther, take the elevator or the stairs — is either building your capacity or shrinking it. It's time to start making choices that build. Like and subscribe, drop your thoughts in the comments, and check the show notes for Max's contact info if you want to work with him directly. 104: The Lie That's Quietly Destroying Men in Midlife — And How to Stop Believing It

Send us Fan Mail Connect more with us! Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nextthirdbestthird/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/next3rdbest3rd Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1KUn8wgqTPxEQo9ejFi01g?si=33932e0993a24d18 Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/next-third-best-third/id1752200976 Of all the lies men believe as they move into the second half of life, this one is the most dangerous because it's the quietest. It doesn't announce itself. It doesn't show up all at once. It settles in slowly, one regret at a time, one missed opportunity at a time, until one day you realize you've stopped questioning it. The lie is simple: it's too late. Too late to change. Too late to dream again. Too late to become the man you once believed you could be. I've wrestled with this personally, and I've watched it take root in the lives of nearly every man I've worked with. And today I want to call it out directly — because this lie, left unchallenged, doesn't just steal your future. It steals your identity. Here's what I've learned: a man doesn't stop living because he gets older. He stops living because he surrenders internally. The difference between a man in his 80s who is still building, still serving, still growing — and a man in his 30s who has already checked out — isn't age. It's belief. In this episode I walk through three questions I want every man to sit down and honestly answer: Where have I quietly concluded it's too late? What dreams or callings have I buried along the way? And what beliefs about aging have I accepted without ever questioning them? That last one might surprise you — because a lot of what we believe about growing old simply isn't true, and the research backs that up. Your story is not over. If you still have breath in your lungs, there is still purpose ahead. The fire you've been through, the failures, the broken relationships, the regret — none of that disqualifies you. It refines you. The man who smells like smoke is the man people trust. The man who's been rebuilt carries depth that the young haven't earned yet. The next third of your life does not have to be a slow decline. It can be a season of intentionality, strength, wisdom, and impact. But it starts today — with the decision to stop believing the lie and start writing a new story. 103: Stop Parenting Your Adult Kids Like They're Still 12 — A Father-Daughter Conversation

Send us Fan Mail I never thought I'd be doing a podcast episode with my own daughter — but here we are, and I'm so glad we finally did it. In this episode, I sit down with my daughter Megan, a doctor of education, a mother, and one of the strongest women I know, to have the conversation that every parent of an adult child needs to hear. We get vulnerable about what communication has looked like between us over the years — what worked, what didn't, and how we built the kind of relationship where she can call me and say "just listen, don't fix it" and I actually do. What surprised me most in this conversation was hearing it from her side. As a dad, I spent years wrestling with the fear of losing connection — the unanswered texts, the seasons of less communication, the letting go that nobody prepares you for. Megan helped me understand that honoring your adult child's season of life isn't giving up on the relationship. It's actually what builds it. We talk about the difference between a parent's legacy and a child's legacy, why your feelings about their silence are yours to manage, the brain development science that should change how you see your 20-something, and why leading with encouragement is the only way to actually earn their ear. If you're a dad who feels like you're losing ground with your son or daughter, this episode is for you. The relationship isn't over — it's just changing. The goal isn't to parent them the way you used to. It's to become the kind of person they want to call. Listen more. Ask more questions. Let them drive their own bus. And whatever you do, don't put your phone on silent at night. 102: The Movement Mistake Men Make in the Gym That's Quietly Aging Their Bodies

Send us Fan Mail Connect with Max: https://www.berteauxhealthfit.com/ Email: Maxberteaux.training@gmail.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/berteauxhealthfit/ Welcome back to Next Third, Best Third. This week I'm digging into the second of our five pillars — physical condition — and I brought in someone who has completely changed the way I think about exercise. Max Berteaux is a movement specialist, a former Marine, and a kinesiology grad who went from being the bullied fat kid who couldn't do a single pull-up to building a craft around helping people move the way their bodies were designed to. I love how Max breaks the difference between exercise and movement, and why so many of us are training in ways that are actually setting us up for pain and injury without realizing it. We get into the science of ranges of motion, why most guys in the gym aren't pressing or pulling through full motion, and what that's costing them long-term. Max walks through what a real movement assessment looks like, why your core is far more than your abs, and how everything from your shoulders to your feet should be connecting force through one integrated system. We also spend serious time on breath work — something I've been studying for weeks — and how learning to control your breath actually controls your heart rate, your nervous system, and your ability to recover under load. The back half of the conversation is where it gets really practical for men in any season of life. We talk about SMART goals, the lie that "no pain, no gain" has sold an entire generation, and why a 5-minute walk done consistently will outperform an hour-long workout you can't sustain. I share what I learned from Younger Next Year and Peter Attia's Outlive about building a "life decathlon" for every decade — what do you want to be able to do at 60, 70, 80, even 90? If you want to make your next third your best third, this episode will help you start moving with intention. Max is coming back for a second episode, so subscribe and stay close. 101: The "Sensory Diet" That Calms Your Body Before You React (Most Dads Have Never Heard of This)

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of Next Third, Best Third, I sit down with a guest who's extremely special to me — my eldest daughter, Dr. Meagan Dwyer. Megan has spent her career in special education and has built deep expertise around sensory processing, regulation, and how our environment shapes our brains and bodies. I asked her to come on because I've been digging into what I call sensory engagement — the way our five senses become a portal into our emotions, our thoughts, and even our unresolved history. So many men I work with are walking around disconnected, suppressing what they feel, and then wondering why they explode in an argument or shut down at home. Megan helped me put real language to what's happening underneath the surface. We get into the science of the amygdala, why cortisol spikes can take up to two hours to come down, and how a child showing up to school after a fight at home is the same dynamic playing out in grown men every single day. Meagan shares how a single sound — the pop of a soda can, a footstep on the floor, the creak of a door — can throw someone into fight, flight, or freeze without them ever realizing why. We also talk about the positive side: the smells, songs, and textures that bring us back home and calm us right down. I share why men were never taught to regulate their bodies, and why "buck it up, don't cry, suppress it" has cost us more than we know. The back half of the conversation is where it gets really practical. Meagan walks through what a sensory diet actually looks like, why telling someone to calm down has a zero percent success rate, and how to introduce these tools to your kids when everything is calm — not in the middle of a meltdown. I share what I'm learning about breath work and how it grounds me, and Megan gives every parent listening a simple framework for observing their child, asking the right questions, and building a real toolbox before the storm hits. If you're a dad who wants to lead your home well, this one will challenge you to slow down and pay attention.
