I am an introverted Gen X'r with a lack of social media. I have written most of my life but never once put anything out there for anyone to read. I love all animals, especially the strays and I have a black-belt in shit talking. To me only a few things really matter in the world, among them being truth, love and liberty, robots, aliens and zombies. My recording sound is very rusty and southern but that will improve with time (except the southern...that's here to stay). I hope you enjoy these stories. Thank you for tuning in.

Welcome to the Podcast Nick Adams Reads!

Thank you so much for giving this humble podcast a listen.  I will just post a little about me to get you started, interested or dis-interested.

I am an  introverted Gen X'r.  I'm not really on social media, because well, the introvert thing.  I have written most of my life but never once put anything out there for anyone to read.  I love all animals, especially the strays and I have a black-belt in shit talking.  When I'm not behind the computer I am hiking or out in the old Landcruiser or watching ASMR videos.   To me only a few things really matter in the world, among them being truth, love and liberty, robots, aliens and zombies.  I am going to post as much as I can and as many different things as I can.  Some or perhaps all of it will suck. If something sucks move on and maybe come back later to try another genre.  No matter what you think or read I want to thank you for stopping by.  I do hope you will enjoy your visit.

    FRIDAY 7:40 AM

If you ask any guy my age what he thinks about when he hears that song he will probably answer with Phoebe Cates. More specifically Phoebe Cates and coming out of a sparkling blue swimming pool, peeling off her red bikini top and walking right to us. Such was our attraction to this girl that we sat through numerous movies, mostly bad, with talent-less male leads. Can someone cue Willie Aames! Even the occasional gremlin wasn't enough of a deterrent to catching another glimpse of those full red lips and long dark eyelashes. She was our girl, and long after our asinine attempts to order pizza in our history class failed we remembered her fondly, untouched, unspoiled and forever thinking we were so cute.

    The Last JoyRide PART 1

    The Last JoyRide PART 1

Winter was in its dying throes when I finally had enough of the malaise and decided the best way to live was just to do just that, live. I couldn't get Sofi out of my mind. I was eating myself alive with jealousy, worry and more than anything sadness. I had never been so close to someone only to have them slip away with absolutely no hope. Writing? Oh man, I hadn't written a thing since I saw her last. Staring at empty pages, a word here and there but no great ideas, metaphors or even traces of memory came forward. That too seemed hopeless. One thing I had figured out though was there was no way I could work the god-damned forty plus hours a week making the wages I did and ever have any sort of a life. That I knew. That was the beginning, the beginning of the end.  Months before I had come to the conclusion that existing lent itself quite nicely to that sort of regimen, not living, and all great writers had lived. At least that's what I thought.

    The Last Joyride Part 2

I had finally drifted off and sleep came in the usual fits. I couldn't get comfortable, too hot then too cold, rolling and thrashing all night I was exhausted but I was glad the alarm had gone off when it did. I practically leapt from the bed and while coffee was brewing I logged into the Mac and started perusing for spare parts for the Cruiser. With the purchase of the trailer my plans were beginning to gel and take form and damned if I wasn't excited. Suddenly the drudgery of work seemed minuscule. There was light at the end of the tunnel and if I squinted I could see an image of myself at the other end beckoning me on. I showered and thought about everything leading up to this very week.

My plans had been revealed to one person only, my buddy Scott.

    The Last JoyRide Part 3.

    The Last JoyRide Part 3.

    Monday 1:50 PM

By Monday afternoon I had changed my mind about the letter, and decided just to tell my manager in person, but I printed it and took it with me just in case. I had been trying to catch her all morning and was going to give it one more go before I went to lunch. No luck. I took it with me to my meeting. I was in a foul mood. Not just work either. I was bummed because much to my disappointment I had seen no sign of the bright green Jeep on the way to work. I had been looking for weeks because that kind of thing stands out, well the girl did not so much the Jeep. Still, it kept every day slightly more interesting due to the anticipation of possibility.

The universe, it moves in strange circles. The Monday afternoon insanity began. The meeting as my manager explained was to be an ongoing monthly time for instruction and 'leveling up.' That was another popular corporate buzz word that meant absolute shit.

    The Last JoyRide Part 4.

    The Last JoyRide Part 4.

    Monday 3:40 PM

I took the stairs the rest of the way out of the building, softly laughing the whole way. I laughed even harder as I burst through the front doors for the last time and ran out into the parking lot where my chair rested on it's side among tiny fragments of tempered glass. I jumped and spun as I ran to the stairway to the third parking level. I could hear a car nearby start, then with engine revving it made a high squeal out of a parking space. I saw the movement as I crossed between the row of cars. It was a navy blue Audi and it bore down on me fast.

I just made it out of the way as the Audi passed, swerving slightly. A flash of black hair and round rimmed sunglasses caught my eye, but I was not afforded a second glance. It couldn't have been. Nah, no way. The Audi rounded a huge concrete support pillar, tires squealing, and disappeared up the ramp.

I continued walking around the corner to my car, and there parked next to me was Kermit the Jeep. It had to be the same one, no two people could get talked into that hideous color. The odds were uncanny. I toyed momentarily with the notion of leaving a note, then decided against it in favor of living with that beautifully mysterious driver in my dreams, a place where she would not have the chance to scrutinize what a vagabond I was about to become.
