    Episode 6C: The Economics of Anime with Roland Kelts

    This is the history part of our Redline episode and today I'm joined by an actual expert guest- author and longtime Japanese culture journalist Roland Kelts. Roland is the author of the very good book Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S., as well as the upcoming (out in July!) The Art of Blade Runner: Black Lotus.  He's also an editor for the journal Monkey, which collects English translations of new Japanese writing, which is publishing a new volume this fall. Japanamerica profiles a lot of the Anime industry in the mid-2000s, while Redline was in production, and does a great job of breaking down the successes and issues in the industry. We talk about some of those today, as well as how (if) they've changed since. We also get into streaming's effect on the industry and the massive success of the Demon Slayer movie.  Also we learn that Pete Townsend is a very good friend with a very good assistant. I am happy to befriend any rock legend that is listening (Rick Nielsen, I know you've subscribed).     Well, it finally happened. Kate Lindsay (The Atlantic) and Dylan Fugel (Sigh) have demanded their own segments. Dylan uses his on history's least problematic safari and Kate gives us a peek behind the SoHo yarn doors. We also talk the Met Gala, hilarious movie title conventions and of course, who are today's most famous celebrities that no one has any opinion of. It's actually a harder question than you think because so many of Hollywood's elite are famously bad people. But of course we manage to do it, because we're so smart and talented at our jobs.     This is the history part of our The Secret in Their Eyes episode and I'm joined by Dustin Molina. In this one, we talk about two things- one of the architects of the Dirty War in the 1970s in Argentina and also what the director of The Secret in Their Eyes did after making his huge hit. He made the most expensive Argentine movie of all time. By like a lot. Well, I'm sure it's about something really important. He also made a sitcom about a professional womanizer- I love how weird Juan José Campanella  is.     It's another Intermission episode, where we take a break from watching movies and just chat. In this very good episode, we're joined by Kate Lindsay (The Atlantic) and also, sigh, Dylan Fugel. Dylan was recovering from COVID as we recorded this, which is why Hugh Bonneville made so much more sense to him this time. Speaking of Hugh, this episode we really ponder the question, "Why are people asking him these questions? Why would anyone care what Hugh Bonneville thinks?"
