All of the emotions!
It is a rare, but marvelous thing to find a show where you connect so deeply with the characters that the story regularly brings you to tears. It is especially almost nonexistent for that that show to be a ttrpg actual play. I love a good drama that leads to emotional catharsis and I can definitively say I've not found a TV show or movie to match Nocturne on that score. The plot it is so intricately and lovingly crafted and considering what that entails it shows that Narrator Pumpkinberry is a very rare talent. The cast have unbelieveable chemistry and give it everything every episode. The sound effects and score are spot on. This is in my highest tier of all time favorite media.
This was actaully my first time consuming a Tabletop production and holy hell did it drag me in. It shrouds you in mysteries/emotions/laughs. The cast beatufiully bounces of each other and are so fluid with scenes you almost forget it's even a Tabletop production. The GM perfectly ties events together that give off the feeling of awe and excitment that truly make the events seem real. Lastly, the production quality and music creation/selection is SOOOOOOOOOOOO immersive you are forced into the world and feel as if you are experiencing everything. I am so thankfull to have watched this and be drugged into the world of Tabletop.
What A Wild Ride
I’ve kept up with Nocturne, almost religiously, over the past year. As a long-time fan of tablestory, I had caught Pumpkinberry’s mini-series Stygian Gate and it was unlike any tabletop series I’d watched to that point. Fast forward a bit and then comes Nocturne.
It’s safe to say, I was excited. From episode one of this show I was hooked. I’d seen a few of the cast members before, such as KatiePetersPlays and DomesticDan, but majority were new to me at the time and I didn’t quite know what to expect. However, I was not disappointed in the slightest. The two I previously mentioned are joined by ClassyPax, Ezekiel_III, and ClassyKatie, as well as Amelia Tyler (an amazing person who voices some of my FAVORITE video game characters). Each member of the cast brought such an intensity to the dynamic of the group, and I’ve honestly never seen a group of people dive so deep into the darkest pits of the human mind on a tabletop show before. The group were shamelessly vulnerable in what makes their characters tick, which led to nothing but AMAZING role play throughout the entire series.
Without getting into too much detail, because spoilers, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream in horror, frustration, anger, joy, and just about every other emotion you could possibly scream in.
I want to give a special shoutout to the amazing GM, Pumpkinberry, and how great of a job she did in running this game. She’s such a mastermind at interconnecting plot points and making callbacks to things you never would have expected. She masterfully spun a web that we were all trapped in, just trying to claw our way out with some sort of sanity.
Thank you, PB, for all your hard work and devotion to what has to be one of my favorite tabletop shows thus far, and thank you to the cast for creating characters that I could emotionally invest in. Although I’m sad the series has come to an end, I’m grateful for the hours of entertainment I’ve gotten from it. I’ve never been more happy to be stuck in the darkness, waiting for my eyes to adjust in time.
