He turned down Gandalf because he didn’t understand the script (that’s right, Sir Ian was a second stringer!) and presumably had the same reasoning for turning down the role of The Architect in The Matrix.     Animation-to-Live Action adaptations really should have waited until at least 2010. Though I guess we could only assume film technology would advance.
