In the beginning: “Second Helpings, Please!”

To celebrate 50 years of the iconic “Second Helpings, Please!” cookbook, Norene caught up with one of the founding contributors, Harriet Nussbaum. Up until recently, Harriet’s address had always been at the back of the book, making her the point of contact for orders and questions from around the world. She joined Norene to reminisce about how this fundraising project launched Norene’s culinary career, and how SHP! stands the test - and taste - of time.

I have vivid childhood memories of my mother slaving in the kitchen before the holidays and on average Sunday evenings alike with her well-loved early publication of Second Helpings, Please! splayed upon the counter. I used to love leafing through it while she cooked, reading the recipes alongside my mother’s and grandmother’s handwritten annotations, all the while trying to imagine the stories behind the stained and splattered pages.

Listening to Norene and Harriet banter about the ever-so fascinating origins of their famed cookbook brought me right back to my mother’s kitchen, warming my heart to 450 degrees. Can’t wait to hear what’s next on the menu! I’ll keep my heart preheated in the meantime…
