Nosy With Intent

Tochi-Maureen Iruke

Nosy With Intent is a cultural diary disguised as a podcast. It's where media, culture, and society get decoded, dissected, and overanalyzed through a curious lens. Join host Tochi Iruke, a Nigerian-American young woman, and chronic over-thinker, as she unpacks the chaos of pop culture, society, and lets face it, the human condition. One spiral, hot take, and nosy question at a time. A safe place for smart conversations, cultural commentary, comedy and general overthinking.

So They're Mentally Ill! Now What?!

SO THEY'RE MENTALLY ILL! NOW WHAT?! We love to say we've gotten better at talking about mental health. We know the language now: trauma, triggers, boundaries, depression, anxiety, healing, therapy. But are we actually more comfortable with mental illness, or are we just more comfortable talking about it? Through Ariana Grande, Anthony Bourdain, Britney Spears, and a few more infamous celebrities part of these conversations, and even some of my own experiences, this episode is about the body, the mind, the soul, the people we become when we're struggling, and the empathy we sometimes struggle to extend when mental illness isn't pretty, palatable, or easy to understand. Maybe we don't always need an answer. Maybe sometimes we need to get a little more comfortable saying three simple words: I don't know. Content note: This episode contains non-graphic discussions of depression, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, addiction, body image, trauma, and mental illness. Please listen in whatever way feels right for you. 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 for free, confidential crisis support in the U.S. Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a trained crisis counselor. SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for mental health and substance-use information and treatment referrals. National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA): Eating-disorder screening, treatment directories, and support resources are available through NEDA. If you're struggling, please reach out to a professional or someone you trust. And if somebody comes to you struggling, you don't have to have the perfect thing to say. You don't have to fix them. Sometimes you can just listen. Take care of yourselves. 🤍 — Tochi Resources

    Sex? In This Economy?!

This is not an episode about sex. At least not in the way you’re thinking of.But we do talk about sex. Does that make you uncomfortable? Does that make you shift? Or does it make you perk up a little bit? Why does this three-letter word still make people shift in their seats? Why does this topic still evoke shame, spectacle, and taboo, no matter the generation? We’ll talk about power, purity culture, hookup culture, the patriarchy, porn, panic, the movies, television, social media, the overall dynamics as a whole that play into the media we consume, and this never-ending weird cultural ferris wheel we keep riding when it comes to sex.And maybbeeeee… a few embarrassing personal experiences of my own sprinkled in between. A very loaded topic, confined into an hour and some change:We unpack at least some of it to give us a better explanation as to why discussing this topic still feels wrong. This is not an attempt to be vulgar for the sake of vulgarity. Nor is it a TED Talk. We are here to have honest adult conversations. Expect history.Expect pop culture.Musical lyrics sprinkled all throughout (can you catch it? 😉).Expect a few laughs, discomfort, and pure raw (no pun intended) honesty.
